Stylish things to know…

26 Apr

IMG_0760

Someone called me a Fashion Diva this week.  I find that rather insulting, though I’m sure he didn’t mean anything by it (if he knows what’s good for him)…so, I’ve decided to make that term my own…a Fashion Diva…someone who happens to enjoy style and fashion and tries to share things she finds in a light, snappy manner, with her friends in her blog…and knowing many of my friends don’t like to read lengthy blogs, this one is chock-full of pictorial illustrations!

So I present to you…Stylish things to know…all in a snappy, visual blog!  You can save a picture onto your computer, to print the one that suits you, so you don’t have to print this entire blog…unless you really, really want to. :)

Nordstrom…Terry’s favorite retailer…I mean, American’s Favorite Retailer!

12 Apr

American’s Favorite Retailers

According to a survey of 40,000 shoppers conducted by Market Force Information, Nordstom  is America’s favorite shopping destination.  They didn’t have to go to 40,000 shoppers to come up with this conclusion…all they had to do was survey me!

nordstrom

I love Nordstrom.  I am happy to report that Nordstrom led in six of the eight categories, including great service, merchandise selection, business wear, and evening wear. But according to the survey conductors, it was actually the store’s return policy that makes them so beloved. Per the press release: “While all of these attributes combined provide a structure for an excellent customer experience, we discovered that a liberal return policy is the attribute that matters most to consumers. Retailers that recognize customer service doesn’t end once a purchase is made have the ability to build a longstanding, trusting relationship with their customers.”

being powerful

A little background regarding Nordstrom, our love affair, when we briefly broke up, but how we fell in love once again.  I love to shop, but really don’t dig going into crowded stores or malls.  Hence, why Etcetera is a great way to shop (sorry, shameless plug).  So…I tend to buy many items online, and especially adore free shipping and free exchanges.  When a retailer advertisers “Free Shipping and Free Exchanges”, I wasn’t aware they were keeping “tabs”, per se.  In Nordstrom’s eyes (or the eyes of the pesky people in customer service), they thought I was “returning an excessive amount”.  They literally called me at my office and asked about my returns.  Now admittedly, most of the returns were shoes I bought online, because of my darned hammer toe, not every shoe feels good (or sadly, looks good) , so some needed to be returned.  And some of the other items were gifts that I found something else I preferred.  I never returned anything worn, or returned anything after an “excessive” time-frame.  Not sure what “excessive” time frame would be for returns, but I’m sure I didn’t exceed that.  So, I explained to the kind woman, who called me “Therese” as noted on my Nordstrom credit card (so I get my Nordstrom points…as well as starting at ebates.com, it’s like they’re paying me to shop), that based on how much money I actually do spend, are my returns really “that excessive”?  Apparently, Yes, was Nordstrom’s take.  So I stopped shopping at Nordstrom for 3 months.   Then lo and behold, I was sent some Nordstrom notes (that’s Nordstrom cash for those who don’t have a Nordstrom rewards card).  Coincidence?  I think not.  I think they missed me.  I missed them.  And I’ve been very good about not returning an “excessive” amount of items.  We are both delightfully happy, once more.

Here’s the Top 10 list of American’s Favorite Retailers

1. Nordstrom - Obviously!  and they have amazing sales on their website.  Service will keep the customers coming back time and time again!  And while I keep talking about shopping online with Nordstrom, the in-store experience is just as fantastic!
2. Kohl’s – I do like Kohl’s, and especially love that everything in the store is almost always 40% off…and when they have their special cash back specials and coupons, again, it’s like they’re paying you to shop.  Unfortunately, I don’t get there as often as I shoud.
3. Macy’s – I am NOT a fan…I miss Marshall Field’s.  Perhaps I’m channeling my mother, but Macy’s really missed the boat by not keeping the Marshall Field’s name…especially in Chicago.  I think they’re still suffering, and will never bounce back.  Ever.
4. Dillard’s – none in Chicago, so really not too familiar with this chain.  Perhaps I need to do some research on Dillard’s?
5. JCPenney – not sure why, but I don’t shop here.  Perhaps the board saw a draft of this post, and fired the CEO this week because I don’t shop there?  Hmmm…could have possibly happened.
6. T.J. Maxx  – my second love!  The note-card, napkin, and household section cannot be beat…and I’ve found some terrific hair products here!  I’m way too antsy to to shop for clothes here,  but I do know they have designer brands here at a “fraction of the price” (so says the commercials).
7. Banana Republic - love it, but kinda pricey for their target market.  Some friends gave me a fabulous cheetah purse from there, with a pale pink silk lining, which I absolutely adore!
8. Old Navy - great for flip flops…if I were to wear them.
9. Ross – not too familiar, but 2 have opened near my house.  I will check it out soon.
10. Target – I shop here weekly, if not twice a week.  for groceries (non-perishable) the prices are so much lower than grocery stores.  And you much check out their dollar section.  Seriously, some really great stuff here!  I found ice scrapers for the car, that’s actually a mitten, with the ice scraper attached for $1.  It must have cost $4 to make, and I’d pay $8 for it.  Loss Leader folks!  I love Target!

Secrets of a Fabulous Woman who Flaunt it!

21 Sep

I couldn’t help but purchase the book…Frumpy to Fabulous:  Flaunting it…Your Ultimate Guide to Effortless Style…only because the book was pink..and had the word Fabulous in its title, and it was quite the title..and that day, I  felt quite frumpy, and was wondering how to feel more fabulous.    So, I perused through the book (which happily I found at the Goodwill store, for $1.69, and buying books at the Goodwill store is worthy of its own blog…Great place to book shop!!)…and while it didn’t have as many pics as I’d like, especially for a person looking to feel Fabulous (because I’m more of a “visual” person, which is why I always like to have lots of pictures in my blog), but something jumped out at me:  7 Secrets of a Fabulous Woman who Flaunts It.  I mean, what’s not to like about that?  I was totally interested, and here it is:

From the book:  Frumpy to Fabulous:  Flaunting it: Your Ultimate Guide to Effortless Style!  (My comments are in italics)

1.  Strengthen your inner core – Not your muscles.  Flaunting it requires confidence, self-possession and complete comfort in your own skin.  I truly believe that confidence will take a person much farther than good looks.  Even “confidence” that is only a rouse.  People always say they wish they had my confidence…I am Not confident…I just laugh a lot, and try not to take myself, or anyone else too seriously.  I can barely pull off looking pretty decent, more than 2-3 times per year, tops!  I just try to look put together, and hopefully not repeating my outfits around the same people, and without cookie stains on my clothes.  :)  I like to think I have nice hair (or at least I used to) and sometimes that’s  half the battle. :)

2.  Have a defined signature style – Know your signature style.  Define your signature style.  I think I’ve done a decent job developing my own style in the past few years.  I love to wear black, because it’s a neutral and goes with everything, and doesn’t show as many stains.  I probably used to be much more “Traditional and Conservative” than I am now.  My work wardrobe basically consisted of Liz Claiborne, Jones of New York and Anne Klein II.  Not so much anymore.  I think many people who used to be more conservative, have also come more into their own as far as style goes.  Plus, the older we get, the more we have a better understanding of what looks good…and what doesn’t.

3.  Utilize Experts – Be clear about the limits of your own knowledge.  Women who are Fabulous, don’t “wing it”.  I love that.  Nordstrom has Personal Shoppers and Stylists.  I know I’ve been instrumental with many women (and men) in helping define their styles and finding what makes them feel their best.  I am in no way an “expert”, but I have a pretty good sense of what people can pull off, what looks sensational, and what they need to avoid.

4.  Be Organized An organized closet is one that is easy to work with.  I’ve blogged about this many times, and if you happen to have missed it (as I’ve found out that many, many, many of my loyal blog followers, and some of my very best friends, don’t read this blog as loyally as I had thought).

5.  Have outfits for every occasion – Own a well-rounded wardrobe that mirrors their lifestyles, personal styles, personalities and goals.  Have a “go to” outfit for special occasions; interviews; chances to impress; funerals (sadly), and make sure these items are clean, pressed and have in tip-top shape!

6.  Timelessness not Trendiness – smart women focus on style and its impact, not fashion trends.  Be Timeless.  Audrey Hepburn;  Jennifer Aniston; Jackie O; Princess Diana; Kate Middleton; Gwyneth Paltrow…These are Fashion icons, whose looks always appears timeless.

7.  Be a Woman of Consequence – a woman with a purpose.  She uses her image as a tool to facilitate her success in all areas of her life.  I think it’s about being the very best we can be, and trying to put forth your best effort.

More Tips

1. Hemlines – Take a look at the skirts pictured. The first style is primarily for younger women with great legs. My best recommendation for skirt and dress hemlines is somewhere between the top and bottom of your kneecap. Once your skirt length starts hovering around the mid-calf area that’s when it ventures into the frumpy zone. The same is true for cropped pants, so beware! This look will make your legs appear shorter and heavier so steer towards lengths that end at the slimmest part of your leg and see how fabulous you look!

2. Fit – Trade in your big, baggy tee shirts and opt for something that skims the body and shows your shape. Yes, I say this all the time but it’s so true. Big and baggy may be comfortable, but body-skimming can be just as comfy without visually adding pounds or creating a sloppy appearance.

3. Neatness – Take a look at your outfit and determine how neat it is. Does your shirt need to be ironed? Are there holes in your sweatpants? Have your shoes or jacket seen better days? These all add up to work against you and keep you in the frumpy zone.

4. Unfinished Business – If you throw on a top and pants and head out the door chances are your look is unfinished, meaning you’ve left off the finishing touches. What accessories could you add to give polish? Sometimes just a belt, a watch and a pair of earrings are all it takes to transform your look from frumpy to fabulous.

5. Go the extra mile – What else could you add to your look to take it up a notch? Try a chic trench coat, a pretty cardigan or a scarf to give it that third layer that sends the message that you’re confident as well as chic and you know how to look fabulous!

Your assignment: When you get dressed have a checklist using the tips above. If your look doesn’t pass muster take the necessary steps to get it up to par and see how not only your image is boosted, but your confidence will be too!

Michael Kors Style Tips!

14 Sep

I love Michael Kors…You can incorporate some or all of his tips into your wardrobe!

Michael’s Do’s and Don’t of Fall Fashion

1.  Go Neutral, darling –  DO return to classic camel. It’s a chic alternative to black that works around the clock.  DON’T do the same shade head to toe. Mix in other neutral to give things some life.

2.  Have Fun with Accessories-   DO wear simple outfits with bright accessories that keep your look versatile.  DON’T skimp on investing in the best quality so what you buy will last for years.

3.  Get Inspired by 50′s Fashion –   DON’T be afraid of curves. It’s all about an hourglass silhouette.  Belt your waist!

4.  Try Tailored Pieces – Invest in a classic pants suit.  You can dress it up, or dress it down.

5.  Buy One Long Skirt –   DO experiment with a body-con shape as an alternative to jeans.  DON’T pile on too many voluminous layers in longer lengths, or you’ll look like you’re standing in a hole. :)

6.  Give clogs a change (not sure I’m agreeing with this one).  These are cute colors.

7.  Own one piece of Rose-Gold Jewelry – the new “It” Jewelry.  Don’t mix rose-gold with silver.  Not a good match.

8.  Incorporate one Purple Piece - DON’T pile on purple head to toe or you’ll suffer from Barney syndrome. Always anchor the color with a neutral.

9.  Wear Camouflage in Moderation – (again, not sure I”m agreeing with this…perhaps No camouflage).  Actually, I do recall wearing a pair of camouflage pants in college…which, if they’d still fit, I could pair them with a v-neck t-shirt and metallic flip-flops.

10.  Buy More Boots – 100% Agreed!  Match your boots to your personal style…

With the Bears game behind us, Thankfully, all I can say is:

Go Bronco’s!

Have a great and always safe weekend.

xoxo,

T.

and Sadly…this can indeed be true.  Perhaps Alcohol has something to do with this?  Just a thought.

Stacy’s Style Tips

24 Aug

I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of Stacy London (What Not To Wear).  I tend to think she can be rather “harsh”.  That being said, I do think she is chock full of great advice, and found this little tidbit, which I absolutely agree with Wholeheartedly.  So I present to you:

STACY’S STYLE TIPS

Choose Quality of Quantity – Look for pieces you’ll have for a long time, and that aren’t trendy. This is great advice and one I wish I had learned early on.  As I’ve mentioned before …I have way too many clothes, and many are not timeless, sadly.  I used to buy Quantity, not Quality.  Now, I angle towards quality, over quantity…though I also have a large quantity.

Don’t Always Wear Black – She says that over 35, black makes you look older. Oopsie. :(  Black is my staple.  Happily, I’m not over 35. :)   Though, I must admit I have been much better this summer with splashes of color…I have a casual, orange t-shirt material dress, that’s made an appearance 3 times (and I’ve journal-ed it to ensure the same people don’t see it too often).   If the Bears Opener is a warm-weathered day, I’ll wear the orange t-shirt dress, paired with a denim jacket and cheetah print sandals…Blue and Orange.  Go Bears!

Pictured below is a fabulous looking chocolate-brown outfit, which I’m thinking is a “must-have” for fall.

Aim High - Shop one tier up in designers that you are wearing. I used to wear Liz Claiborne clothes, religiously…now almost everything I own is Etcetera…I’d say Etcetera is a step up from Liz Claiborne.   Of course, I wore Liz back in the 80′s and 90′s, but who’s counting?  I am also trying to feather in other designers into my wardrobe.  A friend sells Doncaster, and I have some fabulous leather jackets from that line, that I’ve had for years, and are indeed, timeless.

Make a List - Only shop for items you need. Again, Oopsie. Of course, since I’ve been shopping in my own closet, I’ve gotten much better than I used to be.  And Pinterest has truly helped me explore new ideas of fun, new ways to pair up outfits, with clothes I have in my closet.   And that shall be a future blog, btw.

Don’t Forget the Basics – Day and Cocktail dress; Fitted Jacket;  Trench Coat and a buttery Leather Jacket.  Perfectly fitting Jeans.  Great White Blouse. A handbag you cannot live without!  Have fun with Accessories.

Here’s another ideas of some good basics to make sure you have in your wardrobe…though have to say, in my old age, not sure I’ve ever had a “flannel” shirt in my repertoire.  Flannel pj’s, yes.  Flannel shirt, not so much.

Think Versatility – I love this tip…I’ve always said when you find a pair of jeans you love, buy 2…this takes it a step further, you still buy 2 of the same pair of jeans, but have one hemmed for flats and the other hemmed for heels. Brilliant!

Treasure the remaining weeks of summer. Hug and smooch your kids if you’re lucky to still have them at home. And Go Broncos and Paddy in his first Sophomore game!!  This picture is at least 5 years old, I’ve used it before, but I love it, and I love to look at it.

xoxo,

T.

Skirting the Issue

18 Nov

Women who wear skirts in the workplace are more likely to make a good impression and get a promotion.  Or so says a new study.

Pants on women are Not as favored in the workplace as skirts are on women.    This recent poll  revealed that skirts give a better first impression rather than pants.  Whom, may I ask participated in this survey?  Was it men?  Is it due to the popularity of Mad Men?  Is it because of my blog, featuring skirts with boots?  300 people surveyed (which I guess makes it a valid poll) felt strongly about this.  Now I happen to be a girl who always wears skirts and dresses (except at a Bears game), but I still  think women who wear pants, look just as fabulous as those who wear skirts and dresses (as long as they fit properly and are worn with confidence)…but that’s just me…I’m just a “blogger”. :)

Professor Karen Pine, who co-led the research at the University of Hertfordshire, said that the results contradicted previous studies that suggested women should dress more like men to succeed in business.  Perhaps that’s why Pant Suits were All the Rage in the 90′s?

Scientists showed 300 people pictures of women dressed in navy blue skirt suits and pant suits.
The clothing was identical in every way except for the bottoms.   Within three seconds, the majority perceived that the women wearing skirts were more confident, successful and powerful than their trouser clad sisters.

The results concluded that the option women have to wear such attire creates a competitive advantage within the workplace.

“People are judged on their overall head-to-toe appearance and the fundamental role that a dress plays in creating a positive first impression cannot be underestimated,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Professor Pine as telling the Daily Mail.

“Women still have to maintain an identity that balances professionalism with attractiveness. The skirt suit may achieve that balance without appearing provocative,” he added. (ANI)

(Copyright 2011 Asian News International)

I love skirts.  90% of the time, for a business appointment or meeting, I either wear a skirt (or suit paired with skirt) or a dress.  Is it because I’m trying to get ahead?  Hardly…It’s because that’s what I like to wear.  15 years ago, I was all about pant suits.  Times have changed, as have I.  I’m also in the hospitality business, along with my little Dressed to a T business, so I don’t  have a specific “dress code” that I need to adhere to.  I wear what I like, and what’s comfortable and pretty sure I’m not offending people with how I dress.    (And I won’t even mention what the clothing choices are of some of the people I work with are;)).  It’s all about what makes people happy, what’s appropriate for your office and profession and what feels comfortable.   Though I know people in more stringent professions, like banking or law, do have more specific dress codes.  If there’s a question, air on the side of caution, and dress more traditionally, or check with Human Resources.  Luckily I work for a company that doesn’t have a specific dress code, nor a human resources department (well not in the official sense of the word).

These are some great skirt options, though I’d like to see Bachelorette #4 wear a nice cardigan. :)

Now I love the suit below, but not sure the shoes are totally “work appropriate”…depending on your office environment.  Truth be told, not a fan of those shoes…but love the suit.

…and I find these skirt suits and skirts to be absolute perfection…and left the best for last…the leather skirt!  I must have 12, and  I believe they’re timeless.  Please make sure the leather skirt is an appropriate length, no shorter than 3″ above your knee (for work, but it’s a rule I happen to follow for both work and play).  Pair the leather skirt with a great suit jacket and boots, or tights and chunky heeled shoes.  Or pair the leather skirt with a black turtleneck (short or long-sleeved) and boots, hoop earrings, chunky bracelet, and great handbag.  You’re dressed professionally and ready to rule the world. (Again, make sure a lether skirt is appropriate in your workplace and profession).

And I shall continue to wear skirts and dresses…and not because I’m trying to get ahead (I mean, Really?), but because I like them, and wearing skirts and dresses makes me happy. :)

Men Buy…Women Shop…What Men like to Buy!

7 Nov

When it comes from shopping, Men are from Sears, Women are from Nordstrom!

As mentioned in Friday’s blog, in keeping with my promise to pen more “male-oriented” blogs (for the 6 men who actually read this blog), I did some research on items that Men like to buy which make them Happy…Do not try this at home and google it as the smut can possibly crash your computer.  Word of Advice…Never google “Men and Pleasure buy” and think you are going to come up with watches, electronics and shoes.  It won’t happen!

Thank you to my contributors Bruce, Andrew, Chad, Mark, Terry, Noel, Ken, Jack, Steve and Jason!

And ladies, take note, I have 10 fabulous holiday gift ideas layed out for you to buy your favorite male.  These are in no particular order, so #1 can be as important as #10. :)

1.  Eating Out; Food and Kitchen Gadgets - According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest poll, the average guy spends about $1,800 per year eating out while ladies spend $1,145.  Food never once graced the Women’s list, btw.   Men also love to cook and love to cook with the newest gadgets as well.  And in a shameless attempt to get back into my good graces, one contributor mentioned “oysters”…which just so happens to be my newest obsession.  :)

2.  Electronics and Video Games – Flat Screen TV’s; Computers (they change them like underwear – JG) ; Phones (always have to have the newest and used to be the “smallest”); iPad; Video Games, and  stereo equipment.  Unfortuntaely it was mentioned that guys like electronics “to watch the smut”.   I did Not see that coming!

3.  Sports Tickets  and Equipment - Men will spend their last dime to pay for a ticket to a Must-See game; or to pay for the subscription for the Big Fight!  Golf Clubs and Accessories also topped this category, while several specifically mentioned  Under Armour athletic gear, so that’s clearly a favorite.  Basically any type of athletic apparel or sports gear makes men happy!

4.  Alcoholic Beverages – Beer!  Though it appears Vodka is the new Stella.  And Mark was clearly sucking up to me indicating a great bottle of wine!

5.  Cars – Men do love their cars…though I have males friends who say they could care less about cars…not sure I buy that.  And they love to get their cars washed!  That’s one of the downfalls of Kevin working in San Fran, I have to wash my own car…ugh.  And this is NOT my car (obviously) but it came up when I googled Grey Goose…go figure.

6.  Watch - my friend Jason was tickled when he was able to buy himself a fabulous Tag Heur watch…For our 10-year anniversary, I bought Kevin a Rolex…I know he appreciated it, and still wears it everyday some 21 years later, but I think he always dreamt of buying his own, so perhaps he would have preferred to buy it for himself.

7.  Clothing – though from personal experience and that of my friends, with a few exceptions, women buy the men their clothes.  Yet, most men did mention clothing.  Not one of them mentioned a specific item, as women did with a little black dress, or jeans.  Men just lumped it all into “clothes”.  Men are easy. :)

8.  Shoes - Who knew Men loves these as much as women!  Shoes made 50% of the responses.  Not 1 man mentioned Flip Flops either!!

9.  Musical Instruments – this only showed up in one response, but since I am singing a duet with my buddy Noel at my sales meeting this December, I thought it prudent of me to include this response.   My musical instrument will be my voice and tamborine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK9QVN0bpa4

10.  Things for their kids – I have chosen not to use any names re: specifics, but shall make an exception here…Hats off to Jason!  Buying things for his kids makes him happy. :)

I have to say I’m rather shocked that “buying something pretty or fabulous” for their significant other did not show up in my male friend’s responses!  Thankfully I didn’t poll Kevin for this blog.  And one man did mention “Save”, which I find boring, so didn’t put it into the list, but felt it was deserving of a mention, as it’s a mature way to look one’s future…It’s not all about shopping!  Who knew?!

And speaking of kids, I also surveyed the “under-21″ crowd, and while some of their responses mirrored the above, there were a few new gems.  Oh, and thank you Patrick, Blake, Matt and Cade.

1.  Hats – of course – baseball hats!  Patrick must have 100, and now boys are wearing those “flat bill” ones, which I don’t care for.

2.  Cologne. :) – I bit my tongue, and did Not recommend to these young men, “Grey Flannel”, which is my personal favorite…that would ensure these boys NEVER wear it.

3.  Shoes – Patrick has probably more than 40 pairs of athletic shoes…and if his feet haven’t grown to a size 13, he’d be able to wear all of them.  I guess this is where that line “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” came from.  Many of his friends seem to have the same love of shoes.

4.  Hair Products:) :) :) – of course!  These boys are Always well-coifed!!!!

Funny enough, Electronics, did NOT make their list…of course that’s because their parent’s buy these for them  As Blake mentioned, “my Dad is the one who buys everything on apple.com”.  So noted. :)

How are men and women different when it comes to shopping?  Aside from the obvious choices, there is actually research on this very important subject:

Women are happy to meander through sprawling clothing and accessory collections or detour through the shoe department. They like to glide up glass escalators past a grand piano, or spray a perfume sample on themselves on their way to, maybe, making a purchase. For men, shopping is a mission. They are out to buy a targeted item and flee the store as quickly as possible.

“Women tend to be more invested in the shopping experience on many dimensions,” says Robert Price, chief marketing officer at CVS Caremark and a member of the Baker advisory board. “Men want to go to Sears, buy a specific tool and get out.”

How to Shop like a Man

Men focus on comfort, high quality and price. That’s it.  They don’t care if it’s a flat front pair of pants or if they are pleated. As long as they don’t look like a fool, the clothing is priced right and makes them feel good, they’re sold.  As I’ve always said…Men are so easy.

  • Look for comfort
  • Look for better quality (although some feel they get shortchanged)
  • Be less into trends and fads (Women’s clothing is much more “faddish” than men’s)
  • Don’t focus on the logo or the brand (though I disagree as many men I know are all about labels)
  • Scrunch up the fabric in your hand in a tight ball to test it (classic, and isn’t this a great visual)
  • Feel good in it (I think this goes for both men and women)

And there you have it!  No real surprises here, but glad I went through this exercise.

The 3-Bling Rule

1 Jul

And another blog stemming from our new bible, “How not to look old”.  Today’s topic:  The Three-Bling Rule!

Whatever does that mean?  Well…it means when going out for the evening, adhere to the Three-Bling Rule”.  Which, in a nutshell means…Don’t over-bling your bling. If you wear all your jewels at once, you look desperate.    Too much bling, especially matching earrings, bracelet, and necklace sets, can scream,  ”Look at me.  I am not young and hip…and quite possibly, ‘I  think I’m Queen Elizabeth’.”   No need for that.  Mix things up, or go with nothing at all (Jewelry, not clothing).  If you are driving the vehicle above, go with No bling…because how could you compete with that Mercedes Bling?  I mean, Really!  And your tiara?  Not part of this 3-bling rule…no rules there.  If you have a tiara, wear it and wear it proudly.

Like many women, I get giddy when I think of jewelry (and shoes and handbags and chardonnay).  I rarely go out of the house without a watch and earrings.  It’s what I do and who I am.  When I go out at night, I do tend to “bling it up”.  The 3-bling rule is a great reminder that less is more.  There are many fashion experts that say when going out at night, take off 1 piece of jewelry, and then you will be accessorized just perfectly.

According to our new bible, essentially, you’ll get the most dramatic effect from your look by limiting yourself to three bling points.   Some examples from the book:
  • Sparkly dress (2 bling points) + earrings (1 bling) – necklace = 3 bling points
  • Black dress (0 bling) + bold necklace (1 bling) + cocktail ring (1 bling) + shoes or bag (1 bling) – big earrings = 3 bling points
  • Dramatic updo (1 bling) + drop earrings (1 bling) + bracelet or ring(1 bling) – necklace = 3 bling points
  • Jeweled cuff bracelet (1 bling) + shimmery metallic sandals (1 bling) + bold red lipstick  (1 bling) – watch = 3 bling points

Remember not to use all your bling points in the same vicinity. Location matters (just like in real estate). If you are wearing a big cocktail ring, wear a smaller bracelet.  Wearing  large chandelier earrings?   Don’t wear a large necklace.  (Heavy earrings that make your earlobes sag are Not Cool.  When purchasing large earrings, make sure they are light and don’t make your earlobes sag).  If you have a sparkly dress, limit the amount of bling.  If you are sporting the world’s most Fabulous shoes (shown above), make sure the dress is simple without too much bling.  Same goes for the Stunning Judith Leiber holiday clutch.  The shoes or clutch  becomes the focus.  Don’t have your jewelry clash with them.  If you choose to dazzle the world with fancy hair, then go more simple with the make-up.  Everything in moderation. :)

Some examples of the 3-Bling Rule:

And for the men…all I have to say, is please Avoid…at All Costs…the Bling- Bling Pinky Ring!

Don’t have your own bling?  Like Bag Borrow or Steal and other luxury rental sites, Borrowed Bling allows you to rent red-carpet-worthy jewelry at a nominal charge.   www.borrowedbling.com

TIP:  When going out for a big, important event…have a “dress rehearsal” and have a friend take some photo’s in your evening attire, complete with hair, make and accessories.  This way you can see what the rest of the world sees, and become your own fashion and beauty editor.

“Diamonds are forever…jewelry is not”.  Upgrade and update your jewelry…while I have many vintage pieces I wear from my mother or grandmother, and even some bought at a flea market, old jewelry can be just that…old jewelry.

And if you just don’t want to bling out when going out?  Make sure your personality sparkles…and that’s all the bling you will need!

The Party Dress Code…Uncoded

22 Apr

“Never have a hurdle for someone to jump over to come to your party.”  (Cinda)

If people don’t know what to wear, there is a good chance they won’t show up!  Creative, fun party themes are terrific, but it is Not necessary for people to have to dress for the theme.  Make the dress code easy to understand, and easy to obtain.   (Terry O’Brien).

Banish pre-party jitters about attire with this quick reference to dress codes for social events.

 Black Tie or Formal

A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Formal usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some trendier cities like New York or Los Angeles, it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

A White Tie or Ultra-formal invitation requires men wear full dress, with white tie, vest, shirt. Women wear long gowns.

MEN

  • Black tailcoat, matching trousers with a single stripe of satin or braid in the US; two stripes in Europe or the UK
  • white piqué wing-collared shirt with stiff front
  • white vest
  • white-colored (e.g., mother of pearl) studs and cufflinks
  • white bow tie
  • white or gray gloves
  • black patent shoes and black dress socks

WOMEN

Formal (floor length) evening gown

And this couple, nails white tie…regardless of what you think of him as President, Mr. Obama and his wife, clean up quite well:

Black Tie Optional

A Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress, but it should clue you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

MEN

  • Either a tuxedo (see ‘Black Tie’ above) or
  • Dark suit, white shirt, and conservative tie
  • dressy leather shoes and dark dress socks

WOMEN

  • Formal (floor length) evening gown
  • dressy cocktail dress
  • a little black dress
  • dressy separates

Creative Black Tie

Creative Black Tie leaves room for trendy interpretations of formal wear. He can go more modern with a tux — maybe a black shirt, no tie. She wears long or short dresses or evening separates.

Sometimes, themed parties call for dress codes like Texas Black Tie or other variations of Creative Black Tie. In that situation, you can have more fun with it, choosing a dressy look with a theme (for him, it could be a tux with boots and for her it could be a long dress paired with Southwestern style silver belt and jewelry).

MEN

Tuxedo combined with trendy or whimsical items, such as a black shirt or a matching colored or patterned bow tie and cummerbund

WOMEN

  • Formal (floor length) evening gown
  • dressy cocktail dress
  • your dresiest little black dress
  • fun or unique accessories

Semi-Formal

Semi-Formal or After Five means that tuxes are not required, nor are long dresses. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) would still dictate dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or dressy suit for her.

MEN

  • Dark, business suit
  • matching vest (optional)
  • dress shirt
  • conservative tie
  • dressy leather shoes and dark dress socks

WOMEN

  • Short afternoon or cocktail dress
  • a little black dress
  • long dressy skirt and top
  • dressy separates

Business Formal is the same as Semi-Formal for him, but for women it suggests that women opt for more tailored dressy suits and dresses (nothing too slinky or sexy).

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail Attire means short, elegant dresses for her and dark suits for him.  Women can also wear black flowey slacks with a great blouse or festive jacket.

MEN

  • Dark, business suit
  • matching vest (optional)
  • dress shirt
  • conservative tie
  • dressy leather shoes and dark dress socks

WOMEN

  • Short afternoon or cocktail dress
  • a little black dress
  • long dressy skirt and top
  • dressy separates

 Informal

Informal is often interpreted as the same as Casual but it actually calls for the same dress as Semi-Formal — dark suits for him, short dresses for her — especially when associated with a wedding or special event.

MEN

  • Seasonal sport coat or blazer and slacks
  • dress shirt, casual button-down shirt
  • optional tie
  • open-collar or polo shirt

WOMEN

  • Dress
  • skirt and dressy top
  • dressy pants outfit
  • nice jeans and dressy top

Festive Attire – usually for holidays.

Festive Attire is usually seen around the holidays, with the mood of the party being Informal or Semi-Formal. For her, it means to choose looks with a bit of sparkle or holiday bent (i.e. a beaded sweater with black pants, a red silk blouse with a black skirt).

MEN

  • Seasonal sport coat or blazer in color of choice, and slacks
  • open-collar shirt
  • dress shirt and optional “festive” or holiday-themed tie

WOMEN

  • Cocktail dress or
  • long dressy skirt and top
  • dressy pants outfit or separates
  • a little black dress
  • feature holiday colors and accessories

Casual

Dressy Casual calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. For him, it could be trousers and a sportcoat, for her a dressy pants look. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other casual looks are not appropriate for Dressy Casual.

MEN:

  • Khakis or good jeans (clean, no holes)
  • cargo or Bermuda shorts—depending on occation and climate
  • plain t-shirt (no slogans), polo shirt, or turtleneck
  • casual button-down shirt
  • sweater
  • loafers, sneakers (with or without socks), or sandals

WOMEN

  • Sundress
  • long or short skirt
  • khakis or nice jeans
  • shorts (depending on occasion and climate)
  • plain t-shirt (no slogans), polo shirt, or turtleneck
  • casual button-down blouse

Casual generally means anything goes.

Note the gentleman with the flip flops…and note, no snarky comment by Moi.

Happy Good Friday…it’s a good friday to be alive.

There was an old man who lived in a shoe

7 Mar

He had so many options, he didn’t know what to do…until now. :)

A few basic refresher points for my “male fan base”. :)

Shoes

Buy some new shoes. Don’t let your work shoes be your weekend wear shoes, your dressy casual shoes, or “you’re doing the lawn” shoes. Brown and tan shoes are a must and should show up in both your work and dressy casual wardrobe.  Sneakers or tennis shoes should never be worn with anything except a work out outfit.
Lace up shoes are preferred with Suits.

Belts must match the shoe – Remember that one of the oldest fashion rules is the matching of shoes and belts. Try to select these accessories in matching colors. Such choices will add completeness to your outfit and will demonstrate that you are aware of fashion trends.

See how this does not captivate the look you want?

100% leather - invest in good shoes.  Your feet will thank you.  I will thank you.

Formal is always Black - think George Clooney.  Always black shoes at the Academy Awards.

Typically, any shoe color goes with any suit color.  and while lace-up is preferred, there are also great other options out there, if you choose to gravitate away from laced-up shoes.

Flip Flops

For reasons that shall remain to myself, I am OFTEN asked about my thought on men wearing flip-flops or “Mandals”  as Mer Mer refers to them, with pants.  I, personally, am not a fan. Especially for business.   But again…if it makes you happy, and you are comfortable, go for it.   Some of my favorite people gravitate towards this look.   If the weather is warm, “mandals” may be the only option.  I only ask that you do not wear socks with the flip-flops or  ”mandals”.   I only provide guidelines and tips, and may occasionally snicker behind one’s back (Kidding)… It’s all about what makes you feel good.   Or what makes your feet feel good.  Happy feet make for happy people.    If you do choose to show some skin (on your feet), just make sure to treat yourself to a little foot-freshening session — clipping, scrubbing or for those completely secure with their masculinity, a professional pedicure.

It can be downright difficult to find a men’s sandal that is both simple and stylish if you want something other than flip-flops. The solution: a cross-strap sandal. There are no bells and whistles here; just two uncomplicated straps to hold your foot in place. It’s also the perfect sandal if you find a traditional flip-flop that slips on between your toes to be uncomfortable. Just be careful not to go with certain faux-leather types or you could risk looking like grandpa at the retirement home.  And leave the socks at home! :)

Mandals – man sandal-a men’s summer shoe, that consists of black or brown leather that covers more than 50% of the foot, buckles and a thick sole. ”His mandals match his man purse”.   (Urban Dictionary).  Here is a picture of a perfectly fine mandal.  I just happen to think it can look silly wearing it with dress pants, khaki’s , or jeans.

Socks

* Over the calf is preferred with suits

* A shade darker than trouser for work

* A shade lighter than trouser for casual

* Black is always acceptable

Socks should match or complement the Shoe

And to further drive my point home, I would appreciate it if you chose Not to  wear socks with sandals…Ever.  But that’s just me…and here is how a picture is worth a 1000-words. :)

xoxo

T.

PS – Truly, you will save yourself many , many hours over your lifetime, if you safety-pin your socks together when washing and drying them.  And I have often been asked if I , indeed do this, and the answer is an overwhelming YES.
