52 Changes to Make for a Healthier Lifestyle

13 Jan

Perhaps because I started the year with a true Ferris Bueller’s Day off.

It’s unfortunate that Mer and Paddy don’t look excited. The driver looks concerned. Yet another reminder to always remove your sunglasses when taking pictures!

Styling and Swagging…and the day had just begun!  Then off to enjoy some Make Your Own Bloody Mary’s from a 30-foot bar, that included crab legs!

Then went on to enjoy some adult libations at the Bears/Vikings game…and Yes, I’m wearing a Vikings sweater.  When in Rome.  Or Minneapolis.

Then traveled for 4 days to Austin, TX for a work conference, where I enjoyed more adult libations, BBQ, fried chicken and did I mention, adult libations, while hobnobbing with more of my favorite peeps?

Alright, Alright, Alright

Alright, Alright, Alright

Terry, Lora and Not Willy Nelson

Terry, Lora and Not Willy Nelson

To round off the middle of the month, a last-minute trip to an all-inclusive resort, aka all you can eat and drink .  Oh no, more adult libations?  Then laying on the beach?

And we are only halfway through January.

I believe it’s time to make some changes!  Or 52 changes!

Song of the Day: My Own Worst Enemy, by Lit

Please tell me why
The car is in the front yard and I’m
Sleeping with my clothes on
Came in through the window last night
And you’re gone gone
It’s no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy
Cause every now and then I kick the living shit out of me
A smoke alarm is going off and there’s a cigarette
Still burning

(you’re welcome)

Ok…2017, Bring it on!  It’s going to be the Best. Year. Ever…

Style and Swag.

Gifts for the Fitness Lover

9 Dec

This month I will be blogging about different gift ideas.  I will blog about gifts for Men, Women, Teens, Teachers, Hostess gifts…and today…the Fitness Lover!  I’ve chosen to blog about Fitness gifts, because of my current obsession with Triscuits.  More specifically the Rosemary/Olive oil variety.  Pair them with a bit of butter… and you’ll also be thinking about fitness gifts.  Or pants with elastic waist bands.

Here’s some sage advice.  Do not, never, ever, ever buy someone a scale.  Unless they actually give you the link to the actual scale they want.  I think that’s a horrible gift, btw.  🙂

More on these gifts at http://www.popsugar.com

Love, love, love the Wash Me bag.  https://www.bag-all.com/products/travel-bag-wash-me-please – $14.

A blender certainly is not s super fun gift, but we make smoothies almost every day and a good blender makes this so much easier!  I also love the happy plugs!

Fitbit Alta!  You can get this for $129 or $149 at Nordstrom.  More on this one, later.

The Rubz ball is a life saver for sore feet. You can get them on Amazon for about $5.50. Happy feet. 🙂

These are some of my personal favorites:

S’Well Water Bottle – you can get these in 9 oz, 17 oz or 25 oz bottles.  Fun fact:  The 25 oz bottle holds an entire bottle of wine!  Cheers!

Fitbit – The Fitbit Alta is the new Fitbit.  Looks good enough you don’t need a fancy, schmany cover or bracelet.  I’ve been wearing my original Fitbit Flex since 2013.  Thinking of upgrading to this one, myself.

Massage – who wouldn’t love a Massage gift card?  Massage envy, Spa Finder or a local spa are good bets.

Ear buds – Bose in-ear – I received these as a gift and use them every. single. day.  They have great sound and don’t hurt my ears.  I use them while walking Maxie, or running on the treadmill or elliptical.  It’s all about the music!

Ear Warmer ear phones – these are a must if you are outdoors and like to listen to your music and in a cold climate.  Speaking of cold climates, it’s been about 20 degrees here in Chicago.  Ugh.  Anywho, you can find these at Target, Brookstone or Amazon, to name a few.

When in doubt… a Gift Card works.  Lululemon or Althea would be great and appreciated.

Tried and True Books – my personal favorite would be a book or two.

Mer and I have started binge-watching Gilmore Girls!  I love, love, love it!!  Perfect mother-daughter TV.  Paired with a glass (or two) of wine and it’s a perfect night!

Song of the Day:  There she goes again, by Sixpense none the richer

There she goes
There she goes again
She calls my name,
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can’t contain
This feeling that remains

How’s this for the cutest little snow dog?  Looking out a a world around her.  A world in which she cannot run, unless attached to a leash.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

And What a Summer it Was!

12 Sep

It seems like just yesterday I had the entire summer ahead of me.  It was middle of May and I was waiting for Patrick’s arrival home from his first year at Miami University. To me, that was going to be the beginning of summer. So much to look forward to!  Family. Friends. Fun!  It was going to be the beginning of the Best. Summer. Ever!

Now, I am looking back in the rear view mirror at Summer.  Where did summer go?  Where did my great abs in 30-days go?  Here is just a small sampling of my summer.  And what a Summer it was!!

Several fun jaunts to the race track…We even had days which we won.  One day we were winning even though we were betting on the wrong race for three races!  #Winning #OnlyUs

Games of Uno and Uno Attack.  Probably played over 100 games. 🙂  Truly, one of my very favorite memories of summer.  Reverse, reverse!  Skip, skip, skip to my Lou!  You had to be there.  I’m looking forward to Patrick coming home to play some more. #RockStarLife

Quick trip to Cancun – ‘Twas a quick business trip, but had fun, fun, fun.  Eat, drink and be Terry!

It was a summer of Lilly Pulitzer dresses… and not just by me! Mary was on the same bandwagon.

Fun trip to West Palm Beach, where I was treated like a Rock Star thanks to my friend, PMH!  Nothing like having a car pick you up at the airport with a bottle of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay chilling in the car.  Fabulous way to start a fabulous weekend!

Hanging with friends.  Old and new!

Got to meet my new style idol, India Hicks!  She is just about the coolest person ever… and in trying to remain “cool”, I  chose not to have my picture taken with her. Hindsight being 20/20… we know I’m not that cool.  Should have gotten that picture!  I want to be her when I grow up!

Noodling around in a pool more times than I can count on one hand!! Probably one of my favorite summer activities. Enjoyed Bloody Mary’s each time.  It was 5:00 somewhere.  Or 11AM! 🙂  It’s important to note that bouncing around a pool on a noodle, does not accumulate steps on your Fitbit tracker. #WhoKnew?

Cubs game with my #SoleSister.  It’s our year!!  I’m speaking of the Cubs.  It’s always Tracy and my year.  Always.

Late Summer trip to San Diego

Always one of my favorite vacation pictures.  Morning coffee with a view.

Vacation on the balcony. I’ve come to realize that asking servers to take one’s picture can cause a bit of consternation with the server. #Selfie

Styling at the pool. #IHStyle

Awesome day of day-drinking in Laguna Beach with B and B (using initials to protect the innocent).  Nothing better, btw. Plus, I got to try out my Spanish! For the record, I don’t speak Spanish.  🙂

One of my favorite views from one of my favorite places with four of my favorite people!  Seriously, what could be better than enjoying a Vodka/Lemonade, eating a seafood salad and looking at this view? Nothing, nothing could be better. Well maybe if the lemonade was Pink lemonade, that would have been better. 😉

The Movie Gleason.  Saw it twice in two days.  Would have made it three if it was playing near me the 3rd day. If you haven’t seen the movie, I urge you to do so.

Got to meet Steve and Michel Gleason.  Truly one of the highlights of my summer

Team Gleason

Great, great, great summer with kids.

We were also introduced to our new obsession… The Seafood Tower at Ruth’s Chris.  Totally fabulous!  Clealry, this wasn’t our first dirty martini.  Of the summer.  Or of the night.  We were already accustomed to those.  Cheers!

Patrick got a new car and Mer and I got manicures.  #WinWin

This was during the James Taylor concert at Wrigley Field!  Whenever I see your smiling face. 🙂

I also went to see Adele.  Hello!  And last concert of the summer, but certainly not least, I saw Train at Ravinia.  We stood the entire concert.  The entire concert.  Best. Concert. Ever.  Three concerts. One summer.  Not too bad.

And a boy says goodbye to his dog. Sad dog.  Sad mom.  Sad boy?  Not so much. 🙂

Song of the Day:  This’ll Be My Year, by Train

No more
Countin’ down the hours
No more
Wishin’ you were here
I stopped believin’,
Although Journey told me ‘don’t’
Before I call it a day,
Maybe this’ll be my year

And at the end of the day… It was the Best. Summer. Ever!  It was Not the best Bears game ever, btw.   I’m always surprised when they lose.  Always surprised.  Let’s hope there aren’t many more surprises in store for me this football season.

And everything will work out, just the way it’s supposed to!  For that, I am certain!

Are You Here For the Furry Convention?

2 Sep

maxresdefault (1)

“No sir, I am not”, was my response to the young man who inquired if my stay at the Marriott Indianapolis was to attend the Indy Furry Convention, better known as Furcon Indy 2016.  He asked me, wearing a Lilly Pulitzer dress, carrying an India Hicks Palm Duffel, donning my India Hicks accessories, if I, was a Furry.  He just made my day!  I needed a laugh and needed to dry my tears.  Nope, I was just a weary (and sad) Mom, who just dropped her son off at Miami University for his sophomore year and was, quite frankly, more appalled at the Frat House conditions then I was at staying at a hotel that was overtaken by “Furries”. What are the odds?  Really, what are the odds?  I was safe, not at risk, plus I knew it would make a great blog.  Furries Need a Life Coach. Thanks Colleen!  And for the record, Furries do Not need a Life Coach.  Jay Cutler, however, still does.

What’s a Furry Convention you ask? A furry convention (also furry con or fur con) is a formal gathering of members of the furry fandom — people who are interested in the concept of fictional non-human characters with human characteristics. Meaning People Dressed up as Animals, meaning people who dress up as animals, may possible like to partake in “adult behavior”.  This may, or may not be true.  One public misconception, popularized by the CSI episode “Fur and Loathing”, is that furry conventions are places for people to dress up as animals and perform sexual acts with each other.  #Seemingly

Vanity Fair did an article (albeit lengthy) on furries:  http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2001/03/furries200103.  It would be an entertaining read, “Pleasure of the Fur: Welcome to the world of “furries”: the thousands of Americans who’ve gotten in touch with their inner raccoon, or wolf, or fox. Judging from the Midwest FurFest, this is no hobby. It’s sex; it’s religion; it’s a whole new way of life”.

Here’s what I learned from my stay:

  1.  Furries are very nice and friendly creatures…I mean people.
  2.  They carry their costumes in plastic bins.  Not in garment bags, but in large plastic bins.

That’s basically all I can tell you from first-hand experience.  The rest of my “knowledge” comes from the Google. 🙂

Also, this beverage was a fabulous idea. Vodka/soda with two limes.  The bartender also suggested a “double”, based on the animals in the bar.  Splendid idea!  I took my beverage up to my room…a fur-free zone!

A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.  #Truth #CountYourLuckyStars

These are not Furries.  These are two sophomore students at Miami University, Patrick and Mary who were happy to restart their college life after a summer at home and caved in to allow me to take a picture of them.  It was 92 degrees moving Patrick into his dorm, and I think I lost 9 LBs of water weight, sweating, I mean perspiring, from 20 trips to and from the car and helping him unpack in a Frat House, with no Air Conditioning.  Thankfully, we are only paying $7500 for room and board, so why would I think there would be A/C?  But I digress, when Patrick indicated he didn’t want his picture taken, he looked at me and said right to my face, “would you want your picture taken right now?”  Ouch… No, I did not, but little did I know I would be approached about being a Furry some two hours later. I may have two r’s in my name, but it’s not for Furry! #LivingTheDream.  #CharmedLife.

Team Gleason

One of my last posts was about the movie, Gleason…Truly one of my all-time favorite movies.  I urge you to see if, and it will be on Amazon soon if not playing at a theater near you, to get a glimpse into the life of a family who is battling ALS.  I saw it two nights in a row.  Both Mer and I got to meet and speak with Steve and Michel Gleason at a Q&A after a screening.  A moment that truly touched our lives.  It was magic.  It was also humorous, when Michel and I starting speaking football and both discussed our “concern” about Bear’s Quarterback Jay Cutler and his “less than stellar” attitude.  #JayCutlerNeedsALifeCoach.  And how lucky to have Tracy, #SoleSister and Colleen, #MyRaviniaPal, along for the ride and support.  Me and my family are incredibly blessed with the friends and family who surround us daily. ❤

Happy September…the best month of the year!  We have Team Kourage participating in the Les Turner Walk for Life on Sunday, September 18th at Soldier Field in Chicago.  You may donate here:  http://events.lesturnerals.org/goto/TeamKourage2016.  We also have two O’Brien girls birthdays! And… are you ready for some Football?!  Yup, it’s Football season… I am literally giddy with excitement.  On a less than giddy note, sad to miss the weekend nuptuals of Jack and Sarah, but know we are there in spirit!   ❤ ❤

Best. Fall. Ever.

Have a Fabulous Labor Day!!
