A friend asked me about some posts I had found that I posted on Facebook regarding advice from parents to their children.  I did not write those pieces of advice, and may not agree with each of them, but it’s a great, loving collection of thoughts from a parent to a child.  I was asked to put it onto a blog, and since I’m always aiming to please, Voila!   And to put my own little TOB spin on it, I’ve bolded the items I really love….if an item is not bolded, it does NOT mean I don’t love it…but I just bolded the ones that I could envision saying to my kids, or Kevin saying to them…

20 Things a Mom should tell her son:

1. Play a sport. It will teach you how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others, manage your time
and stay out of trouble. And maybe even throw or catch.

2. You will set the tone for the sexual relationship, so don’t take something away from her that you can’t give back.

3. Use careful aim when you pee. Somebody’s got to clean that up, you know.

4. Save money when you’re young because you’re going to need it someday.

5. Allow me to introduce you to the dishwasher, oven, washing machine, iron, vacuum, mop and broom.Now please go use them.

6. Pray and be a spiritual leader.

7. Don’t ever be a bully and don’t ever start a fight, but if some idiot clocks you, please defend yourself.

8. Your knowledge and education is something that nobody can take away from you.

9.  Treat Women Kindly.  Forever is a long time to live alone and it’s even longer to live with somebody who hates your guts.

10. Take pride in your appearance.

11. Be strong and tender at the same time.

12. A woman can do everything that you can do. This includes her having a successful career and you changing diapers at 3 A.M.
Mutual respect is the key to a good relationship.

13. “Yes ma’am” and “yes sir” still go a long way.

14. The reason that they’re called “private parts” is because they’re “private”. Please do not scratch them in public.

15. Peer pressure is a scary thing. Be a good leader and others will follow.

16. Bringing her flowers for no reason is always a good idea.

17. It is better to be kind than to be right.

18. A sense of humor goes a long way in the healing process.

19. Please choose your spouse wisely. My daughter-in-law will be the gatekeeper for me spending time with you and my grandchildren.

20. Remember to call your mother because I might be missing you.

20 Things a Father should tell his daughter

1) Pay attention to the way a man loves his mother. That is the way he will love you.

2) You can do anything a man can do, including organic chemistry, unclogging toilets and assembling IKEA furniture.

3) Older women wear makeup so THEY can look like YOU. Less is more. A lot less is a lot more.

4) People will judge you by the way you look. It isn’t fair, but it’s the way the world works. Keep that in mind as you pick your outfit in the morning.

5) Never let anyone do your thinking for you. There are far too many people with far too much invested in you believing what they believe.

6) Liberal arts grow your mind. Science and business keep you fed. You will need both.

7) Nothing is more attractive than intelligence.

8) Learn to drive a stick-shift…I still cannot drive a stick shirt…Kevin tried to teach me to drive his Maserati in the Pentagon parking lot in 1990, as he said, “the world’s largest parking lot”…and I could not master it.

9) Get comfortable with power tools. My friend Susan loves power tools…Real power tools.

10) You don’t have to enjoy them, but have a working knowledge of the rules for football and baseball.  Go Bears!

11) Know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek, and they key players in both.

12) You don’t have to *DO* anything for someone to love you. The right person will cross a desert just for the chance to sit next to you at lunch.

13) Peer pressure is all about insecurity. Be confident in who you are and you’ll never have to “fit in”. People will come to you.

14) The fastest way to strain a relationship with a man is to bring up old drama. We can’t remember to hang up the bath towel. What makes you think we remember that stupid thing we did 6 months ago?

15) If a man genuinely loves you, he will let you set the boundaries. Don’t let anyone take something from you they can’t give back. You set the tone for the sexual relationship.

16) Feminie hygiene products — Where our daughters are concerned, we would be very happy sticking our fingers in our ears and saying “lalalalalalalala”. Please respect our need to pretend they, and the reason for them, do not exist. The same goes for lacy underthings.

17) You were flawless the day you were born. If you must go get that first tattoo, please consider inviting your daddy to come and get his first tattoo with you.  DO NOT EVER GET A TATTOO!!!!!

18) You are perfect the way you roll out of bed. Let’s be clear: all that crap you do to “get out the door” is for everyone else’s benefit.

19) Though he may be smiling on the outside, when you leave for college your father is falling apart on the inside. Don’t forget to call him that first night to tell him you love him.

20) Compare every single boy you ever meet to your daddy. Nobody will love you like he does.

20 Things a Mom should tell her Daughter

1. Smart is the new cool. Never be ashamed of being smart or nerdy, having freckles or glasses, or loving science and math.  Smart never goes out of style, it stays with you as you grow, and it will lead you down the most successful paths.

2. No matter how many times you hear it, “Diamonds are NOT a girl’s best friend.” Friends are invaluable. They are trusting and loyal. They stick with you through good times and bad, happy or sad. Some will come and go, but your true friends will be with you always.

3. Go for it, get dirty! It’s good for you. Besides the fact that getting dirty actually does help support your immunity, it’s also a great way to express creativity!  Sculpt, draw, and stomp.  Better yet, go “classic” and make some mud pies.

4. Beat the boys at their own games. Football, baseball, hockey or golf, never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because you’re a girl. So go ahead, build the tallest tower of legos, kick butt on Xbox, and bust out your light saber.

5. Be spiritual. Find the desire to understand the universe and your place in it. Take the time to notice the earth and all of its beauty.  Give thanks to God.

6. A strong hand shake leaves a lasting impression. It represents self-confidence and ambition.  A strong hand shake and eye contact exemplifies a mutual respect for one another and is a sign that you are friendly, trustworthy, and honest.

7. Read something every single day. From the Cat in the Hat and Dr. Seuss to Junie B Jones, reading is exercise for your brain.  It expands knowledge and vocabulary- and lets your imagination run wild.

8. When it comes to wearing make-up, there’s a general rule of thumb that applies – LESS is MORE.

9. When it comes to fashion, shorter does not always equal better.  Fashion trends come and go and not all of it is fabulous.  Half tops and mini skirts are great for an 85 degree day at the beach or if you’re a Miami Dolphins cheerleader, but not for your high school yearbook photo.  I’ve been forced into stating the Dolphins are my #2 NFL team.  

10. Please, please, please do not allow yourself to become someone else’s property.  Why this is trendy, I will never figure out.  If you want to make a statement about yourself on clothing, at least let it describe an aspect of who YOU are.

11. Speaking of trends, I hope that by the time you are allowed to date, guys don’t wear their pants hanging half way down their ass like they do now.  I really feel like this has been pretty popular for quite some time and I am praying that it finally goes away by 2022.  Also, I will flip my lid if you become this guy’s property! (see #13)

12. Being an angel should not and does not mean wearing only your bra, underwear, and a set of wings for everyone to see.

13. Don’t let pop culture define you. I don’t know why, but today we let pop culture manipulate our youth and it’s killing them emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually. From the early on fascination with princesses, to the ‘need’ for a boyfriend and big boobs, popularity, teen moms, and all the other garbage being thrown in their face – be confident going against the grain.

14. Accept yourself for who you are. You’re one-of-a-kind and that’s what makes you beautiful.  Tall, short, big, small, blonde, brunette, redhead, white, brown, blue, pink, yellow – we are all DIFFERENT.

15. Mainstream your health. It’s life’s greatest asset.  A positive approach to health encompasses physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well being.  Healthy lifestyle choices in your youth will help lay a strong foundation for continued wellness throughout your adult life.  Diet, exercise, stress management, chiropractic, self motivation, positiveness, and meditation, as well as a number of other approaches are guaranteed to make a huge impact on your quality of life, health, and happiness.

16. Have confidence in yourself. A positive self-image assures power, strength, ability, and value.  It will enable you to conquer your goals and allow you to fearlessly pursue your biggest dreams.

17. Love with all your heart. For where there is love there is life.  Love is universal and felt by all living things.  So strong is the feeling of love that it is said it makes the world go round.

18. Never be afraid to laugh at yourself. Laughter is humbling.  It inspires and motivates.

19. Wherever you are in life, you can come home.  I will be here – always.

20. Enjoy the innocence of your childhood. In a world full of superficial values, peer pressure, and bullying, as well as a pop culture that pushes materialism and consumerism – you are being leapfrogged through your childhood.  There is a constant pressure for you to grow up way too fast.

20 Things a Father should tell his son

1) Learn to dance with a partner. Nothing is classier than a man who can walk his partner onto the dance floor with confidence.  Sadly, Kevin cannot dance…but I’m lucky to have enough male friends who fit that bill.

2) The only time it is appropriate to use your fists is to defend yourself from someone else using theirs on you.

3) Liberal arts grow your mind. Science and business keep you fed. You will need both.

4) That woman in that picture, or in that movie, or on that stage is someone’s sister/daughter. Treat her the way you would hope someone else would treat your sister/daughter if she was unfortunate enough to find herself in the same position.

5) Learn to filter. Before you say anything, think about how the words you plan to use will sound in the ears of the person you are speaking to.

6) Learn to disagree with someone without taking personal offense – if for no reason other than the fact that you can’t expect something from someone that you aren’t able to deliver yourself.

7) Never let anyone do your thinking for you. There are far too many people with far too much invested in you believing what they believe.

8) Peer pressure is all about insecurity. Be confident in who you are and you won’t have to “fit in”. People will come to you.

9) Never relax when your wife is doing chores. Though she may say it’s “OK”, you never want to be “that guy”.

10) Hold open the door, pull out the chair and give her your coat. Chivalry is not sexism.

11) Respect the woman you are with. No matter how badly you want to, don’t make your move until she tells you that it’s OK. Let her set the tone for the sexual relationship.

12) A real man knows crying is OK, but doesn’t over-do it.

13) There is no football game more important than a Sunday date with your wife.  A friend told me he gave up watching the Heat v Bulls game to have a “date night” with his wife…I don’t think Kevin would ever expect me to miss a Bears playoff game, since that’s where I’d rather be as opposed to being on a date with him!  Go Bears!

14) Never lose sight of the fact that no matter how much you believe, no matter how convinced you may be that you are right — you might just be completely wrong.

15) Learn early to tie a tie.

17) You don’t have to like their music, but be able to identify Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin when you hear them. Again, classy. Fly me to the Moon…total classic!

This is incredibly true…should you ever want to find out something about someone, Stalk their Pinterest page…so much more interesting than Facebook…Of course, I’m not speaking of mine, because you’ll only find fashion, home decor, someecards (:) ) and food I want to make for Meredith and Paddy…which I never seem to make, but I do have the best intentions, and I do have an entire summer ahead of me!

Mother’s Day is this Sunday… ” a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society”.   Each and every day, I say thanks that I’m blessed to be a Mom to Meredith and Patrick (and Murphy)…and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss my Mom. If you are lucky enough to still have your own mother around, tell her you love her and should you want to give her a token of thanks, I’ve listed some ideas if you haven’t yet had a chance to get her a gift of appreciation…for being the very best mom ever.  Remember, your Mom is always the best Mom ever!!

Here are some ideas, that I have for Mother’s Day…and then I will present ideas from other sources.

1.  Card – home-made, store-bought…best not to send a someecard!  The kids each wrote me a letter they put in my Christmas stocking telling me why they love me.  I always have those letters with me…and will till the day I die (hopefully down the road, a bit).

2.  Plant flower pots – Meredith and Patrick did this for me last year, and I loved it…am hoping they do it again this year.

3.  Breakfast in Bed – I mean, who doesn’t like this?

4.  Take your Mom to brunch, lunch or dinner – while breakfast in bed is great, it’s also great to be treated to a meal out, so your dear mother doesn’t have to cook…unless she likes to.  This sweet mother, does not necessarily enjoy cooking.  But I’d also love a BBQ, if that was offered.

5.  Pick her favorite movie and watch it with her – My kids will be watching Brian’s Song with me…and my new favorite, Silver Linings Playbook…and perhaps with a little bit of the bubbly?  The double feature will be You’ve Got Mail.

7.  Why don’t you read her a book she always read you? – why not get your Mom sobbing by reading her, I Love you Forever?

Organizing your handbag…or what in the world was I thinking carrying all this stuff, and how can I find what I need?!  I happen to love purses, and have more than I can count (and I’m under-estimating this out of pure shame).  I prefer to carry a small clutch, which holds a small wallet, (think card case), my iPhone (I stopped carrying my 2nd phone,  the blackberry last year in an effort to ‘downsize”), 1 lipstick, 1 small pen, 5 business cards (which double as a note card if needed) and small pill-box to hold Aleve (darn knees), and an antacid (darn heartburn when I drink wine…I could stop drinking wine, but I choose to carry an antacid instead) and if I think I’m going to need them, reading glasses (darn my age) . That’s basically all I carry.  If I’m going on an appointment or travelling, I take a tote/laptop bag (which is actually a really cute, larger-sized purse) , in which to carry my iPad (or laptop depending on what’s needed), along with other essential items; (headphones, something to read, Sudoku  fast flats, notepad to jot down all my ground-breaking thoughts which are too many to put on those 5 business cards  and new screenplay ideas, extra pair of reading glasses and extra pair of sunglasses).

I know many women would consider what I carry in my “tote”, basics they carry with them every day.  Reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer in the movie, One Fine Day with my next husband, George Clooney…where she had basically everything a child or woman would need in her purse.  Those who know me understand I do not like to carry things that are heavy…when I travel or go on appointments, these items would feel to me “heavy”.  Hence, I like to carry a small purse.  I throw my small purse into my tote, when I need more than my usual fab 5 items and all is well.

I couldn’t make up my mind between the black and pink tote, so I got both of them.  Not the meaning of Frugal is the new Black…so clearly wasn’t following my own mantra.  But I do love the pink one as well!

And the small clutch, which I throw into my tote…I think the small clutch’s need to have a bit if zip…so I like a bit of sparkle or metallic.

The key to handbag organizing is to categorize items, and in such a way so you can see them.  There are “handbag organizer”s  which I thought was just another gimmick, and only decided to try one when I got 2 off Groupon for less than $10 apiece.  I’m happy to report, they really work.  I throw that in my tote/laptop bag and it has many, many handy compartments that divide and conquer the contents of the purse/tote.  You can throw that in the larger bag, and You are organized.

That being said, there are many other ideas in which to organizer your handbag, and ideas that are far better than what I do.  The internet (and Pinterest) is chockfull of great ideas and visuals…and 2.5 years into this, we know I like nothing more than perusing for ideas for my blog…

If your bulging bag has worn a groove in your shoulder, and it’s so overfilled that it takes you forever to find your car keys, it’s time for a handbag makeover.

“The biggest mistake is that people carry everything in their purse,” says Anne McAlpin of packitup.com.

McAlpin, a packing expert who has developed her own line of travel products, says that most women (moms especially) should regularly empty out their purse, figure out what they really need and don’t need, and then repack it. Here are her top five tips for keeping purses well-stocked and organized.

Choose the right design.

McAlpin likes purses with long shoulder straps, which can be worn across the body. Zippers are good for keeping things contained when your bag flips upside down as you’re bending over to retrieve a sippy cup or strapping a young one into the car seat. Outside compartments are useful for quick access to cell phones or water bottles, while a large, open interior without too many compartments provides the flexibility to organize your bag to suit your own needs. Look for light-colored linings, which make it easier to see the contents. And a built-in key fob is handy for easily fishing out your keys—helpful in a rush.

Make your own compartments.

Keep smaller items handy.

Don’t carry what you don’t need.

Are you really going to have time to read that heavy book you’ve been lugging around? Be realistic about what you actually need during your day; leave the rest in your car or substitute lighter, more compact versions. For instance, carry a travel hairbrush or comb instead of your full-size brush.

Leave gift cards and unnecessary credit cards at home too, unless you know you’ll need them. This’ll slim down your wallet and help you avoid the temptation to spend needlessly.

Unless you write checks on a regular basis while shopping, don’t carry your checkbook in your purse. Instead, stash one check in your wallet with a sticky note on it. If you need to use the check, jot the amount on the sticky note and then register it in your checkbook when you get home.

Hop on the technology bandwagon.

Today’s latest cell phones have a slim profile and multiple functions and features. A single device can act as your calendar, photo album, memo pad, shopping list, MP3 player and GPS device—not to mention your cell phone. There are apps that take away the need to carry every store loyalty card.  I use Card Star, which stores my Mariano’s, Jewel, Sephora, and other loyalty cards.  I haven’t found one yet that stores gift cards, or one that does so efficiently, and am still on the look out for that.

From WikiHow… Step by step tips to organizing your purse

1.  Empty the bag’s contents on to a flat surface. Sometimes it’s best to do this by taking the items out one at a time so that the makeup does not open and make a large mess all over the surface.

2. Separate the contents into two piles: Things you must have in your purse and things you don’t need.

3. Place your shadow and blush cases in the pockets if you have any. It’s always best to use the pockets so you have more space to put other things.

4. Zip any ‘personal’ items away in a zipper pocket inside the purse. That way they’re out of sight.

5. Store other small items in the other zipper that is usually located on the front of the purse, sometimes it’s Velcro, button, or there’s none at all. You can store mp3 players, cells (although there’s usually a pocket for that),mints/gum, a mirror, etc…

6. Put your wallet and anything else nicely in the main part of the purse.

7. Voila..you now have an organized pocketbook!

I am soooooo tired of this rain…My hair is soooooooo tired of this rain.  My soaking wet feet are also exhausted from this rain, as is sweet little Murphy.  My life would be a whole lot easier if I would dress appropriately for the rain, and since it appears more rain is heading towards Chicago, I thought it would be a good idea to blog about what to wear in the rain…and hopefully I’ll read this blog myself and get some ideas about dressing appropriately in the rain.

Rain Totes/Bags – There is no need to have to get your fabulous leather bag wet.  Carry a rain tote or bag, in inclement weather.  These bags need to be waterproof, so those made of plastic are typically the best bet…zippered at the top, is also a plus, so everything in side doesn’t’ get wet.  You can even put your fabulous leather pocketbook in the rain tote.  Plus, while wearing your galoshes, you can store your shoes and umbrella, in case the rain lightens up.

Rain Coats and Trenches – The ever-classic Burberry trench will  never go out of style, but if it breaks your bank, you can find some affordable options with style and flare!  The newest styles include ruffle-trimming; exotic prints, bold colors and everything in between. Double-breasted or single, short or long; a trench is a surefire way to keep dry while looking good.

This first photo is a Burberry trench…and if you can afford it, I’d highly recommend it.  It can last a lifetime…or a very long time.

Rain Ponchos/Capes – my sole experience with a Rain Poncho, has been at a Bears game…and that’s not a look that I can pull off…of course, my Poncho’s were from Disney, so thinking perhaps I can feather one of these into my repertoire of rain gear!  On a side note, some very dear friends of mine gave me a Fleece Bears Poncho!  That, is a classic, and has provided Much joy and laughter…but not necessarily style.  :)

Rain Boots – Meredith specifically told me about Hunter boots…and the great thing is you can buy Welly socks to wear inside, so these rubber boots, can also keep your feet warm in the winter!

Rain Hats and Bonnets – Soldier Field does Not allow umbrella’s so it’s important to have a rain hat for inclement weather…and Umbrella’s aren’t always an option.  I’m still looking for a suitable rain bonnet.  I know lots of people wear baseball caps, but unless they’re waterproof, not sure they’re always the best option.

It’s important to “protect your hairdo”.

Umbrellas – It’s important not to spend too much money, because they break, you lose them, you lend them to friends and don’t get them back…and you can literally get a great umbrella for less than $10…scratch that…probably $3!

Shuella’s – your shoe umbrella

These delightful rubber shells slip right over any size heel. They come with a convenient pouch for stowing and carrying when you arrive to your destination as well as a cloth to wipe away any excess water. Available in fun, vibrant colors (Hot Pink, Buttercup Yellow and Apple Green) these will surely cheer you up.

American’s Favorite Retailers

According to a survey of 40,000 shoppers conducted by Market Force Information, Nordstom  is America’s favorite shopping destination.  They didn’t have to go to 40,000 shoppers to come up with this conclusion…all they had to do was survey me!

I love Nordstrom.  I am happy to report that Nordstrom led in six of the eight categories, including great service, merchandise selection, business wear, and evening wear. But according to the survey conductors, it was actually the store’s return policy that makes them so beloved. Per the press release: “While all of these attributes combined provide a structure for an excellent customer experience, we discovered that a liberal return policy is the attribute that matters most to consumers. Retailers that recognize customer service doesn’t end once a purchase is made have the ability to build a longstanding, trusting relationship with their customers.”

A little background regarding Nordstrom, our love affair, when we briefly broke up, but how we fell in love once again.  I love to shop, but really don’t dig going into crowded stores or malls.  Hence, why Etcetera is a great way to shop (sorry, shameless plug).  So…I tend to buy many items online, and especially adore free shipping and free exchanges.  When a retailer advertisers “Free Shipping and Free Exchanges”, I wasn’t aware they were keeping “tabs”, per se.  In Nordstrom’s eyes (or the eyes of the pesky people in customer service), they thought I was “returning an excessive amount”.  They literally called me at my office and asked about my returns.  Now admittedly, most of the returns were shoes I bought online, because of my darned hammer toe, not every shoe feels good (or sadly, looks good) , so some needed to be returned.  And some of the other items were gifts that I found something else I preferred.  I never returned anything worn, or returned anything after an “excessive” time-frame.  Not sure what “excessive” time frame would be for returns, but I’m sure I didn’t exceed that.  So, I explained to the kind woman, who called me “Therese” as noted on my Nordstrom credit card (so I get my Nordstrom points…as well as starting at ebates.com, it’s like they’re paying me to shop), that based on how much money I actually do spend, are my returns really “that excessive”?  Apparently, Yes, was Nordstrom’s take.  So I stopped shopping at Nordstrom for 3 months.   Then lo and behold, I was sent some Nordstrom notes (that’s Nordstrom cash for those who don’t have a Nordstrom rewards card).  Coincidence?  I think not.  I think they missed me.  I missed them.  And I’ve been very good about not returning an “excessive” amount of items.  We are both delightfully happy, once more.

Here’s the Top 10 list of American’s Favorite Retailers

1. Nordstrom - Obviously!  and they have amazing sales on their website.  Service will keep the customers coming back time and time again!  And while I keep talking about shopping online with Nordstrom, the in-store experience is just as fantastic!
2. Kohl’s – I do like Kohl’s, and especially love that everything in the store is almost always 40% off…and when they have their special cash back specials and coupons, again, it’s like they’re paying you to shop.  Unfortunately, I don’t get there as often as I shoud.
3. Macy’s – I am NOT a fan…I miss Marshall Field’s.  Perhaps I’m channeling my mother, but Macy’s really missed the boat by not keeping the Marshall Field’s name…especially in Chicago.  I think they’re still suffering, and will never bounce back.  Ever.
4. Dillard’s – none in Chicago, so really not too familiar with this chain.  Perhaps I need to do some research on Dillard’s?
5. JCPenney – not sure why, but I don’t shop here.  Perhaps the board saw a draft of this post, and fired the CEO this week because I don’t shop there?  Hmmm…could have possibly happened.
6. T.J. Maxx  – my second love!  The note-card, napkin, and household section cannot be beat…and I’ve found some terrific hair products here!  I’m way too antsy to to shop for clothes here,  but I do know they have designer brands here at a “fraction of the price” (so says the commercials).
7. Banana Republic - love it, but kinda pricey for their target market.  Some friends gave me a fabulous cheetah purse from there, with a pale pink silk lining, which I absolutely adore!
8. Old Navy - great for flip flops…if I were to wear them.
9. Ross – not too familiar, but 2 have opened near my house.  I will check it out soon.
10. Target – I shop here weekly, if not twice a week.  for groceries (non-perishable) the prices are so much lower than grocery stores.  And you much check out their dollar section.  Seriously, some really great stuff here!  I found ice scrapers for the car, that’s actually a mitten, with the ice scraper attached for $1.  It must have cost $4 to make, and I’d pay $8 for it.  Loss Leader folks!  I love Target!

This blog is for Gracie..my friend Joy’s beautiful daughter (Joy is beautiful as well, but this is for Gracie, not Joy ).  I am in No Way qualified to write anything about beauty tips, just as I’m not qualified on telling people how to have thin thighs in 30 days.  That being said..I do think I know what looks good, I know right from wrong, and  I am quite astute in searching topics on the internet.  My make-up routine consists of moisturizer, under-eye concealer, mascara, light pink eye-shadow on my eyelids, eye liner, and possibly bronzer or light pink blush.  My routine Never takes more than 4 minutes…and that’s for a night out.  Sadly, it also probably appears that way, as well.    So I should say this blog is for Gracie…as well as me!  And thank you Gracie for recommending this topic!

Beauty tips for the College Girl

Here is a  quick routine that will make you look wide awake even when you have a 8AM class. They say this  will take less than five minutes?  Found these great tips on collegegloss.com

Tinted Moisturizer:

Tinted moisturizer is a college girl’s best friend. It’s perfect because you can smooth it onto your face during the morning rush to class. Try to find one with SPF so that you get sun protection as well as a light coverage. I find that a tinted moisturizer is perfect for taking the redness out of my cheeks without looking completely made up for class. This one from Clinique gives skin a healthy glow, and the Aveeno tinted moisturizer is available at most drugstores as well!

Peachy, pink blush:

Blush is one of those products that really makes a huge difference in a little amount of time. All you have to do is sweep the shade on the apples of your cheeks and you instantly look radiant. Pink shades are the most universally flattering, but peach shades look give you a natural glow as well. Try blushes from brands like MAC, Benefit, Maybelline and NYX. Each brand offers a wide variety of formulas and colors. Our favorite? Beach blush from Cargo.

Eye shadow:

You don’t have to get crazy and put six different shades on your eyes for class, but you can sweep a light shimmery brown shade across your lids for added dimension. You’ll never have to hear the words, “you look tired” when you use this trick. If you’re really in a rush, you don’t even need to use a brush to apply this, just dab on the shimmery shade with your ring finger. MAC make some really great shimmery shades, but Physician’s Formula and Covergirl offer some nude shades as well. A great affordable option is the Coastal Scents Original Palette.

Lengthening mascara:

If you only have time for one thing in the morning, mascara should be at the top of your list. It also helps to curl your lashes because it really opens up tired eyes. Mascara adds a subtle definition that’s enough to give you the confidence to wink at the cutie in calculus without the added step of eye liner. I love drugstore mascaras because mascara has one of the shortest shelf lives cosmetics-wise (3 months, ladies!) It makes more sense to search for a less expensive option if you’re going to be buying mascara four times a year. Maybelline Volum’express mascara and Covergirl LashBlast mascara are top choices.

Tinted Lip Balm:

Okay ladies, a show of hands: how many of you have gotten your hair caught in your lip gloss on your way to class? Been there, done that! Then on top of that, you have to make the super-flattering motion of getting your hair out of the said lipgloss. Has anyone else noticed that lip gloss acts like super-glue on hair? Just me? A tinted lip balm is the perfect solution to this common problem. The tint gives you color like a gloss, without the stickiness factor. Burt’s Bee’s makes great tinted balms in several colors.

Beauty Tips every Teen should Know

Skip the foundation

If you have acne the first thing you want to do is slather on the thick foundation. Don’t. Foundation is for women over 30. Not only will it cover up your natural beauty, but foundation on a teenager looks anything but natural. Instead, cover up blemishes with concealer, then follow with a powder or tinted mosturizer. Tinted moisturizers tend to be lighter than heavy foundations.

You pat concealer in, you never rub it in

This is a beauty trick every magazine touts. When applying concealer, put a bit on the pad of your middle finger and pat it in. Never rub. Got acne? Pat the concealer on top of it.

Play up your lips or eyes, never both

If you wear smokey eyes, go for nude lips with just a bit of gloss. Prefer the drama of dark lipstick? Keep face light (stay away from heavy blush) and wear only mascara on your eyes and a light eyeshadow. Don’t heavily line your eyes. Play up both and you’ll look like a clown.

And never, ever line lips in a darker color than your gloss or lipstick.

Less is more

Ever notice how some of your friends look best with no makeup at all? No matter your age, too much makeup makes you look worse. If you wear foundation, powder, blush, liner, mascara, eyeshadow, lip liner and gloss on an everyday basis, then you’re overdoing it. Tone it down: All you really need is a great mascara, concealer for blemishes and gloss. Add a pop of blush in winter.

Natural hair is always best

If you have super dark hair, lighten your look by going a shade darker or getting lighter highlights. Blonde? Try highlights, especially framing the face. We see too many teens lightening their hair several shades and the look can be super-tacky, not super-fabulous. The trick is to let people assume you were born with sun-kissed hair, not that you gave yourself a bad dye job from a bottle. 

Vaseline is your best friend

Vaseline is a great, cheap eye makeup remover. It’s also great for fixing chapped, scaly lips. Slather on a bunch of Vaseline, then use a toothbrush to massage lips. Wipe the excess off on a tissue. Your lips will be smooth and soft.

You can never go wrong with layers Long layers are great for any hair type: Super curly, straight or wavy. It makes thin hair appear thicker, curly hair appear manageable and wavy hair appear just-got-back-from-the-beach sexy. Just make sure you don’t get too many layers cut in. Too many short layers is dated.

Acne? Get thee to a dermatologist, stat

Biggest mistake people with acne make? Not going to a dermatologist. Forget those $150 jeans you covet. Getting rid of those pimples will be the best investment you’ll ever make. And the only guaranteed way to do it is with a dermatologist.

Buying foundation or lipstick? Test it first

There are some beauty products you simply must try out at a department store or Sephora before you buy. These include: Foundation, lipstick, blush and powder.

Buy these products in a grocery store and you’ll be lucky if you picked the right color for your skin tone. What you can get away with without testing: Mascara, eye liner, most basic eye shadows and lip gloss.

When can you skip Sunscreen? Never!!!!

Here’s a trick we wish we knew: The first beauty product you should apply every day is sunscreen, even if it’s cloudy or rainy outside. Why? Good habits start young and if you use sunscreen now, you’ll have gorgeous skin when you’re 50, 60, 70. Remember, the sun’s UV rays can penetrate clouds and car windows.

Wrapping hair around the curling iron barrel creates waves

There’s nothing cooler than long, layered waves.  To get them, wind hair AROUND the barrel of a large curling iron. Reverse direction for each 2-inch section (wind up for one, down for another).

Self-tanner will always stink

Unfortunately, even the best ones smell. Your best bet is to apply self-tanner a good 24 hours before an important event and take a shower (don’t loofah) to wash off any smell. For really big events like a dance or wedding, consider a professional spray tan. These are pricey and don’t last long, so make sure to do it a day before the big event.

Don’t let nails go

Not into manicures and pedicures? No worries. Just make sure to keep nails clean and the same length. If you do want to paint them, don’t keep the polish on until half of it’s chipped away. Also, there’s nothing worse than too-long toenails. Keep nails clipped between pedicures! People tend to judge others by the care they put into their hands and feet.

Don’t line the inside of your eyes

It will make your eyes appear smaller. Instead, line just at the lash line. Also, an obvious line doesn’t look natural. Smudge the line just a bit.

Oily Hair?  Try baby powder at the roots

If you have blonde hair, sprinkling a bit of baby powder on your roots and at your crown will soak up excess oils. If you have brown hair, you might be better off with a dry shampoo for your hair color.  They also have some great Dry Shampoo’s now.

Shave legs at the end of the shower

Cut down on nicks and cuts by making shaving the very last step in your shower or bathing ritual.   If you don’t have shaving cream, you can use conditioner!

Know your best feature and play it up

What feature do people comment on most? Play it up. If you’re told you have Angelina Jolie lips, make sure to wear gloss and play with bold lipstick colors. If it’s your eye color people love, find eyeshadow colors that complement them and make sure to wear mascara. Also, know what color shirts look best on you and go shopping.

Scrubs are great for dry skin

If you have dry, itchy skin in winter, invest in a scrub and handmitts and scrub away in the bathtub. Make sure to slather on a thick moisturizer afterward. For dry, callous-y feet, buy a pumice stone. They work better than any of the other wimpy options on the market.

Remember: Beauty is mostly internal

Think about a girl you know who’s overweight yet all the guys love her. Why? Because she’s confident. If you aren’t wearing makeup and your toes haven’t been repainted in weeks, if you’re happy and smiling you will still be 10 times prettier than the mopey cheerleader sitting next to you in class.

Hmmm…guess I should start throwing away my make-up!  Like milk and bread, they have an expiration date!  And I know this blog is a tad lengthy (sorry, LAP), but that’s why I threw in many pictures…and I’m going to try the Red Lips tutorial.  Stay tuned.

On a side note re: “attractiveness”, a friend of mine indicated he thought Paris Hilton was “hot”.  I just don’t see it so took a quick straw poll and asked my 5 Top male peeps, and not one of them agreed…one of the best comments was, “she’s kinda ‘nasty sexy’, but Definitely not attractive”.  I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you can Never go wrong with being kind to others.

My friend Sonal posted this on Facebook, which she re-posted from one of her friends.  I’d guess this has made the rounds many, many times, but Easter morning was the first time I saw it.  I love it enough to make an Entire blog about it.

Burned Biscuits – A lesson we all should learn.

When I was a kid, my Mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my Mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed!

All my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my Mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that ugly burned biscuit. He ate every bite of that thing… never made a face nor uttered a word about it!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my Mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I’ll never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burned biscuits every now and then.”

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your Mom put in a hard day at work today and she’s real tired. And besides, a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone!”

As I’ve grown older, I’ve thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. I’m not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s faults and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

“Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket… keep it in your own.”

So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burned one will do just fine.
And PLEASE pass this along to someone who has enriched your life–I just did!
Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
