Don’t Buy it if you don’t Love it

3 Jun

Don’t buy it if you don’t love it. And love it only if it flatters you.

It doesn’t matter what big name is on the label. It doesn’t matter how low the price. Does the piece make you look good? Does it make you feel good? That’s what’s important. The lesson here: Buy less, buy better, be picky. If you can walk away without getting a pang, do yourself a favor and walk away. You don’t need another piece of clothing in your closet taking up valuable real estate.  And take it from someone who knows and has started shopping in my own closet!  And I sell clothes!

One of my favorite movies is The Blind Side…and a favorite quote, “One thing I know, if you don’t love it in the store, you won’t love it at home”. How true that is. I cannot tell you how many items of clothing and shoes I have in my closet, still with the tags on them.  And I fancy myself a savvy shopper. (Yeah, and based on the lambasting I received from my savvy packing blog, let the lynching begin!)    I’ve begun “shopping in my own closet” because, quite frankly, I have a lot of clothes.  And I have a lot of items I haven’t worn.  And many aren’t shopping regrets, but I have regretted buying so many clothes!

Some of my biggest shopping regrets (and some that have nothing to do with Fashion)

1.  Clip on Pony Tail.  No need to elaborate.  Though in my own defense (I guess I’m elaborating), I did get it to wear to a Prom-themed fundraiser.

2.  The many, many , many pairs of shoes that I bought, and they haven’t felt fabulous, so I never wear them.   And more specifically the pair of shoes that I insisted my mother buy me in 3rd grade, that basically mangled my toes… Truly.  I regret that purchase.

(these were not a pair of shoes I regretted buying.  I would not buy these shoes.  Just thought they were snappy, and wanted to share them)

3.  Denim-look workout suit.  Again, no need to elaborate.   The only good news here is I never wore it.

4.  Balloon skirt – which made me look like a balloon.  Not the look I was going for.

5.  Light Pink Leather jacket I bought on eBay.  I turned around and sold it on eBay for about 25% of what I paid for it.   Word to the wise, it’s very difficult to buy an item of clothing or shoes on eBay, unless you are buying a brand you truly know.  Handbags and sunglasses are easier purchases!  And I often test that theory!

6.  Cowboy boots, which I bought to wear to a Blazing Saddle fundraiser.  I realized I wasn’t going to spend $200 on a pair of boots I wouldn’t wear again.  Plus I’d rather give that money to the charity.  Actually, CP , told me that, and I pirated that from her!   And I still returned them. :)

(Above cowboy boots are fine,  just not for me…and no cowboy boots will work for me.  Darn shame really)

6.  Pink Sunglasses.  And I actually wore them to a golf outing.   They matched the pink polo.  (you may roll your eyes here).

7.  Skinny jeans.  Did not make me look skinny.

8.  Porsche Cayenne…while the car is great in the snow, in the past 2 years, I’ve had to put over $4300 into it.  Maintenance, Tires, Brakes.  My last 3 cars were BMW’s, and they were maintenance free.   Wish Rudy at Motorwerks had shared that if you own a Porsche, you should be prepared to spend lots of cash on maintenance.   I was not.  And am not moving forward.    BMW’s are 5-years maintenance-free.  That…is a good thing.   And, I am not complaining that I drive a Porsche, it’s just a purchase I regretted.  Plus, this car was  less than my last car, so I was downsizing and saving $$$.  Plus, several people have indicated that the car is “not me”.  I mean, what car am I anyway?  A red Volkswagon Beetle convertible with white leather interior?  Actually, that would be fun.     Note to file.  When buying a big purchase, do not take 12-year old son and allow him to make the decision. ;)

9.  Light Suede couches for Great Room.  Yeah, they lasted all of 3 years, before they looked 38 years old and had to be replaced.

10.  Vintage jewelry I bought at a flea market, and I was so excited with my purchase…until I realized each piece was missing “valuable gems”… basically couldn’t wear them, and if I had to , could only sell them for parts.  They are still in the box in which I bought them…and never did sell them or use them for parts.

There is a lesson to be learned here…Don’t buy it if you don’t love it.  Don’t make impulse buys.  Try on shoes before you purchase them, unless you are certain about the size, and can return them.   And for gosh darned sake, don’t buy a denim-look workout suit. ;)

My work here for this week is done.

Disclaimer – these are purchases I regretted for Myself…I am not saying these are bad items (‘cept that denim workout outfit).  They just didn’t work for Me.  As you can see I am trying to limit as much backlash as possible…I just know that Cinda won’t be able to help herself…and for that,  I love her. :)

Summer Fashion Trends

“I like my money right where I can see it: hanging in my closet. “

SUMMER 2011

Postcards from Summer. Wish you were Here.  The Weather is Here…Wish you were Beautiful.  Everything’s trendier, tastier, brighter. We’re all set to take-off, go barefoot, don fresh prints, dip into fruit-punchy colors, glitter by day and do balmy nights right.

1.   GLAM-TO-GO

Time to take off. Travel light. Pack a lot of style into one small suitcase (See, I’m learning)!  With go-to looks that couldn’t be trendier, tastier, brighter.  Tweedy suiting, downtown denim, easy shifts, breezy shirtwaists, pretty skirts and the sexiest floral sheath on the planet.

2.   NEARLY BAREFOOT

Drifts of fabric. Delicate prints. Drapey cardis, mini sarongs, white shirtwaists, ruffle-necked shifts, ankle-grazing columns of baby-fine mesh and flowered cotton toile. Everything you love about summer. Light, airy, like running barefoot on the beach.

3.   FRUIT PUNCH

Drink deep from delicious summer coolers. Colors of sunshine over crushed ice. Sweet cantaloupe, ripened pomegranate, splashes of hot pink, hot shots of chrome yellow, the bright icy green of a melon martini. Done singly or in zesty combo.

4.   HOT FLASH

Glitter by day is an absolute must. Sequins on animal print netting, the shine of barely there satin. Gold threading through knits, jacquards, basketweaves; the guilty pleasure of a gold lamé motocross jacket, metallic twins, skinny ankle pants.

5.   FRESH PRINTS

Tie-dyes, washes and watercolors. To live in and love. Pick up the must-have maxi dress in bare-backed cotton toile; skirts gathered, smocked, faux-saronged, nailhead-trimmed; and a tie-dyed cardi to toss on anytime, anywhere, over anything.

Now, I do find the above shorts, Quite short…but I do love the top, and paired with a pair of vintage jeans, or white shorts, would be a fabulous summer look!

Color:

Delicious summer coolers, hot flashes of bright, some guilty pleasures and lots of black and white.

And, in keeping with my equal opportunity blog, Here is what Nordstrom forecasts as the 2011 Summer Fashion Trends:

1.  Make it Maxi – talking about longer skirts, ladies.   Pair it with a simple white t-shirt, tank top, or white blouse with the sleeves rolled up to your elbows.

2.  Colorful Carryalls – Bring a Pop of color to your look, with a colorful handbag.  I love this Red Patent Leather Handbag.  And the yellow wicker handbag is a must-have!

3.  Embellished Sandals!  Love these – bring bling to your feet.   In my case, hopefully this will detract from my unfortunate-looking feet, while focusing on the jeweled sandals.

4.  70′s tops – the 70′s trend is not going away.  I just choose to keep it away from me, however.  ;)

5.  Bold Bangles – I’ve been talking about these for months.    And my friend “D” gave me a set of these bangles 2 years ago…always leaps and bounds ahead of the trend.

6.   Vintage denim – comfortable, worn out jeans.  Never leave home without ‘em.  No need to post a pic, as we all know what these are. ;)

7.  The On-Edge Wedge - The Wedge shoe really does help distribute your weight, and helps save your feet.  And with Any summer sandal, break them in around the house, on carpeting for a few days before venturing out.  When your feet sweat, this can cause blisters.  Remember my tip about putting Gel deodorant where the straps on your sandals hit your feet.   For trendy sandals, check out Target or TJ Maxx.  The Nordstrom Women and Children’s sale is going on now…I buy most of my shoes, On Sale, from Nordstrom.  No need to break the bank in order to wear stylish, trendy shoes!

8.  Aviators – These sunglasses, reminiscent of Tom Cruise in Top Gun have made a Huge Comeback.  They look good on everyone.  And look especially great on Meredith!  (I apologize now to her, as I’ll hear about it when she wakes up at noon and reads my blog).

9.  Beach to Bar Cover-ups.  Been doing this for years.  Wear a casual, cotton dress to the pool or beach, then head out for apres-sun cocktails.  And my friend Carol suggested,  wearing a Men’s White Dress shirt, works perfect as well!  Pair them with a great pair or wedges or blinged-out sandals!  Leave the pumps at home!!

10.  Sun-Kissed Skin.  My personal favorite powder is Benefit Dallas Pressed Powder.   This Rose-Bronze powder is $24.

Summer is Almost here, weather (pun intended) or not Mother Nature is aware of it.

Thank you Bulls for a Great Season!  Go Mavs!!

Have a Happy and Safe Memorial Day!

We don’t need to be like her…we have lots of options to dress stylishly and comfortably this summer!

Dress your Age Survey…Seriously?

16 May

So, there is a little “survey” of 1000 women making the rounds that indicates:

“THE AGE WOMEN BELIEVE YOU SHOULD STOP WEARING”…

  • Bikini, 47
  • Miniskirt, 35
  • Tube Top, 33
  • Stilettos, 51
  • Belly button piercing, 35
  • Knee high boots, 47
  • Trainers, 44
  • Leather trousers, 34
  • Leggings, 45
  • Ugg boots, 45
  • Swimsuit, 61
  • Tight vest, 44
  • See-through chiffon blouse, 40
  • Long hair, 53
  • Ponytail, 51

Ok, all I can say is Poppycock!  That’s total Bunk!  I don’t buy a word of this…and, I, myself, have broken many of these rules, or shall do so in the next few years.    I live in knee-high boots, Uggs, and Leggings.  Belly Button Pierce?  not saying.  I don’t wear leather trousers, but love my leather skirt.  And, looking into the future, I will choose to still wear my hair in a pony tail when I sleep, wear a bathing suit, so I don’t have to swim “au naturale”, and basically wear what I please…as long as I do not offend the masses.  As we know, most fashion rules, in my opinion,  should be thrown out the window.  My rule, if you love it, and love you in it…go for it.

This survey has caused Quite the outrage.  Names like Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jennifer Aniston  have all been mentioned.   I think these women look pretty sensational breaking these rules:

In this picture of Nicolette Sheridan…is she dressing too young?  Maybe…but you cannot deny she is rocking this look.  She’s in her mid 40′s and looks like this?  We should all be so lucky.  It’s not like most women over 35 are wearing Hello Kitty Flip Flops, Glitter Hot Pants, or are shopping at Limited Too.  Ugg boots are extremely warm and comfortable, and what else are you supposed to wear to a Bears game in mid December?  High heel boots with skirts are a wardrobe staple for many women I know  in the winter.  Plus,  if you can wear a bikini at 47 and look good in it (this is key), why not?

Remember 50 is the new 30, 40 is the new 25, and women of any age can Rock a look.  This is an area where self policing is best.  We all know when something doesn’t look great on us (or at least we should).  Life is short.  Wear what you want, but hopefully love what you wear and love yourself  in it.

Again, I have to say…I never followed the rules anyway…and here’s to me breaking Most of these rules this summer…sans the tube top.  Yeah, never.  And the “trainers”…not sure what those are anyway… Probably wouldn’t wear a tight vest either.  Well here’s to me wearing what I like…and being happy doing so, and hopefully not offending the public…or at the very least my children!

Yes, You Can Wear White after Labor Day…

6 May

And other Fashion Rules debunked…

It used to be considered the biggest Fashion Faux Pas to wear white after Labor Day.  Today, however, winter white and other off-white colors are gradually gaining acceptance as a fall and winter fashion staple. Not wearing white after Labor Day is an outdated fashion trend.  But I caution as to wearing cotton pants, or eyelet patterns in the winter.   Curious about some other fashion trends that may be outdated?  I googled fashion myths, and while these all came up as myths, I have to stand by my original statement, in previous blogs, and say that I actually agree with Myth #9…it is Not acceptable.  Read on to break your curiousity…And here is a list of the top ten fashion myths people still wonder about today.

Myth 1You can’t wear sandals after Labor Day. Reality: This is just as outdated as not wearing white after Labor Day. You can wear sandals fashionably any time of year, as long as the weather is appropriate for them.  And I’ve actually worn high heel sandals, with a LBD  (little black dress) to fancy occasions in February, with snow on the ground…that’s what husbands who drop their wives off at the door are for. :)

These are the sandals I wore with a black dress and velvet-black shawl with light pink accents,  to a school fundraiser, in February:

Myth 2You should wear suede shoes Only in the fall and winter. Reality: Yes, suede shoes look good with most Fall and Winter fashions, but there is nothing stopping you from wearing a fine pair of fabulous suede shoes any time of year.  And, I will take it a step further…I will indeed wear boots with summer skirts!  These red suede peep toe pumps, would look Smashing with a black pencil skirt, and white blouse.  Or pair them with your summer LBD.

Myth 3You have to cut your hair after 40 because middle age women shouldn’t have long hair. Reality: This is just false. In fact, long hair can look great on older women, even making them look younger. Look at Demi Moore. Her hair is incredibly long and she looks great! You should always select a style you like because it looks good, not because someone tells you that you have to wear your hair a certain length.  And I am continuing to grow my locks out longer.  Check out my previous blog,  “Hair today Gone tomorrow”, for more of my opinion on this subject.  http://dressedtoat.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/hair-today-gone-tomorrow/?preview=true&preview_id=522&preview_nonce=6752d256af

Myth 4You shouldn’t wear black in the spring and summer. Reality: While bright summery colors are fun, black works well any time of year including spring and summer. There is no reason not to wear black any time you want if you think it looks good.  If I couldn’t wear black in the summer, I would have nothing to wear!

Myth 5 – You should only wear diamonds in the evening. Reality: In “times of old”, it was considered a faux pas to wear diamonds during the day. This is not the case today, you can wear tasteful diamonds any way and any time you like!   I have a tennis bracelet that I wear everyday.  I received it for our 15th wedding anniversary, and while I told Kevin I didn’t think I could wear it everyday…he thought that was nonsense, and he didn’t buy it for me so I could put it in the safe (not that we have a safe…or not that we don’t have a safe, but not divulging that )…so I wear it everyday…not as much as Marilyn, but no one can pull off what she can.

Myth 6You can’t mix jewelry made from different colors of metal, like yellow and white gold. Reality: This is also ridiculous! You can mix any different colors you like as long as the combination is tasteful. You can even mix different metals like sterling silver, gold, platinum and more!  I love to mix and match, and thing that too “matchy-matchy” ages you.  I love to wear a rhinestone chunky necklace with jeans, white blouse, and cardigan.  And I love this, according to Urban Dictionary:  MATCHY MATCHY:  “Often used in fashion blogs. Used to describe an outfit that is too coordinated and consists of too many of the same types of colours, patterns, fabrics, accessories, designer pieces, thematic elements, etc. Can also be used in reference to interior design.”

Myth 7Wearing black at a wedding is bad luck or taboo. Reality: Today you can wear any color you like to a wedding. In fact, black is very appropriate for an evening wedding. The only color not encouraged during a wedding is white. You don’t want to outshine the bride after all!  Talk about bad luck!  Of course Pippa Middleton through caution to the wind, and just about outshined the bride. ;)

Myth 8Your shoe color needs to match your outfit. Reality: You can actually find shoes in several complementary colors that will likely look better than a shoe in the exact same color as your outfit.  Taupe and beige shoes for example go with almost any color.  I love the patterned boot with this outfit…It pops!  And while the Eva Longoria outfit is rather extreme for South Barrington, I think it looks terrific, and love a totally contrasting colored shoe to the outfit.

Myth 9You can’t wear nylons if you plan to wear open toed shoes. Reality: I have to say, I agree that you cannot wear nylons with open toed shoes.  I know they say for very sheer, sandal-toed hose, it would be “acceptable”…but we are better than “acceptable”, aren’t we?  Here is a picture of sandals with hose, and without.  You be the judge.

Sandals with hose:

And these are sandals Without hose:

Myth 10You can only wear velvet during fall and winter months. Reality: Today you can wear velvet any time of year. Velvet is more often seen in the fall and winter because it is a warmer fabric. However when worn during a formal occasion, velvet works well ay time of the year.  I have a black velvet shawl, that I use year-round for special occasions.  I could see wearing this little navy velvet bolero jacket with a white t-shirt, jeans, and black patent leather high heels!  Or swap out the jeans, for a black or white pencil skirt, with funky metallic belt.

Bonus extra:  Myth 11: Black and brown don’t match. Reality: Black and brown do match, and look quite sophisticated, too. Pair rich brown wool trousers with a black turtleneck, or wear black shoes and hose with your brown skirt. For evening, try a brown cocktail dress instead of a black one, and dress it up with this season’s black beaded necklaces or bracelets. One combo to avoid: Brown shoes with black pants.

There you have it, your Top Ten (make that 11) fashion myths uncovered. When it comes to fashion, it is more important that you look and feel good than you follow the rules of fashion ‘etiquette.’  Unless you are a celebrity or other public figure, most people would not dare comment on your outfit anyway, except to tell you how great you look. :)   To say anything else would be extremely disrespectful and indicative of poor judgment.  And that would not be being fabulous!  And face it, You are fabulous.

I was never a rule follower anyway!

xoxo,

T.

Happy Spring…the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming and Mer Mer comes home today for the summer!

Wardrobe Must-Haves

8 Apr

Yippee Ki Yay!  We are back to Fashion!

There are some items that you absolutely need ready and waiting in your closet. These make up the basis of your wardrobe; they’re the “must-haves” , no matter what your style — the wardrobe essentials. To be considered a wardrobe essential, an article of clothing has to have several important attributes:

  • It must be versatile. This is the most important quality of an essential piece of clothing. One key factor in versatility is color. Because wardrobe essentials have to go with lots of other clothing, they tend to be monochromatic and neutral in color. They also must work with different outfits. A jacket that you can pair with a skirt, pants, or a pair of jeans is a good example.
  • It has to be of good, perhaps even exceptional, quality. A wardrobe essential makes a statement, and anyone looking should be able to tell that it’s top shelf. High quality also means that it wears well, and for a very long time — very important for a garment that you’ll rely on again and again.
  • It should be in a classic style. You don’t want your wardrobe essentials to ever really go out of fashion.
  • It must be a 10 or a Wow!  These garments, like everything in your closet, should have all the qualities of a 10, and because they form the basis of your stylish wardrobe, it’s okay to spend a little more for these than you would for  other, less essential, items.
  • WARDROBE MUST HAVES OR GOTTA HAVE EM:

Black dress – The Little Black Dress (LBD) -  Should classic and  sophisticated (and dare I say teetering on sexy) . It should be well-made and fit like a glove. It should hide your flaws and accentuate your attributes. It can go from day (wear it to the office with a cardigan or blazer and a set of pearls and leather pumps) to night (take off the blazer or cardigan and add some  evening makeup,  funkier jewelry, and heels).

Black pants – A pair of high-quality, flat front, black trousers are a necessity in every wardrobe. Stay away from pleats because they only accentuate an area that no one really needs accentuating! If you can buy only one pair of trousers, select a length that matches the heel height you most commonly wear. And choose a lightweight wool that will work in summer or winter.  Like a great pair of jeans, if you find a pair you absolutely Love, Love, Love, buy a 2nd pair.

White blouse – Think of a white button-up blouse as your upper body’s version of black pants—it’s versatile enough to wear anywhere, with almost anything. Pair your white shirt over a bathing suit for a weekend getaway or with your favorite pants for work.  You can dress it up.  Dress it down.  It’s perfect.

Blue jeans - Whether faded or tailored, the right pair of jeans will make you feel fabulous every minute.  When you find a pair that you absolutely love, and fits perfectly, if you can swing it, but a 2nd pair. My new favorite brand is Kut from the Kloth.  I get them at Nordstrom.  I have the faded, ripped pair, and a darker denim.  Same fit. Different look. Ralph Lauren and Seven Jeans are 2 other great brands that work for me.

Sassy skirt – Every woman should have a knee-length black skirt that fits perfectly and gives her a slim appearance. The particular style is up to you (and what looks good on your body type): It can be a pencil skirt or an A-line skirt.  So that it can go from season to season, look for one that’s a lightweight wool.  I suggest one not too short, and not too long.  Just above the knee.  Pair it with boots, or high heel pumps.  Wear it with a turtleneck, or white blouse, or sweater set, or t-shirt with denim jacket.  Each gives the outfit a new fresh look.  Take it a step further, and make your black skirt, a black leather skirt…Leather is not just for clubbing anymore (not that I would know about clubbing).  I have a black leather skirt , slightly higher than the knee, which I pair with…you guessed it, white blouse, or a turtleneck, or a black suit jacket.  And, I’m able to wear it for work.  It’s a classic look, even with it being a leather skirt.

Flats - Give your feet a well-deserved break and get a fabulous pair of flats; try a knockout color like red. Heels aren’t the only way to fancy up your feet. From preppy-casual to peep-toe sexy, you’ll love the way the right flat shoes look with jeans, dresses and trousers.  These are a recommendation from my friend Donna, who finds Tory Burch flats, the most god-awfully uncomfortable shoes!  Attilio Giusti Leombruni.  And, pricey, yet worth it.  My #1 fashion advice (aside from a fabulous black shawl)…Life is too short to wear uncomfortable shoes.  Find shoes that feel good, and You will feel good.

Boots – According to the laws of fashion, when something has been around for three seasons or more it has the right to declare itself a “basic”.  Wear them with jeans, leggings, or a skirt or dress.   In fact a decent pair of  boots can catapult even the most boring outfit into a fashion wow.

Denim jacket  – I wear mine to dress up an outfit, or dress down an outfit.  One of my favorite looks is to pair a dress with a denim jacket.  I love wearing a wrap dress, denim jacket, and boots.  I also wear a black skirt, white t-shirt, chunky necklace and denim jacket.  Or, my black denim jacket, blue jeans, and white blouse, and high heel sandals.  This is the 3rd time I’ve posted this picture, but I just want to drive home my point…you can wear a black denim jacket with just about anything!  (Note…it is very difficult to pair a Blue denim jacket, with Blue denim jeans.  Do Not try this at home).

Wrap dress - I always feel great in a wrap dress.  you can wear it with a camisole  underneath, or skip the cami, and just flaunt what you have (or don’t in my case, and try to rely on your sense of humor).    I wear mine with boots, or high heel sandals, or my black patent leather peep toe pumps!  They’re easy to travel with, because they weigh next to nothing.  And you can dress them up with pearls, or dress them down with a denim jacket!

Cashmere Sweater  - Invest in a classic style in a statement-making, vibrant color to brighten up your wardrobe. A cashmere sweater is luxurious and versatile—you can wear it to the office, for an evening on the town or just chilling out at home.  Choose a v-neck or a sweater set.  You can pair it with jeans, pants, or a straight skirt, or wear it over your LBD.  You can get one in black, cream, or red…or an argyle print.  You can also look for a vintage one.  I have one that is a cream-colored Lacoste that was my Father’s, and I wear it belted with a skirt and boots.  Oh, and there’s always something on the bottom! ;)

Trench Coat – A basic belted trench coat is versatile and comes in a variety of fabric and color options. To avoid looking like a secret agent, choose a well-tailored option that hits right at (or below) the knee for a polished look.  I like Red, Black or White.  My friend Donna has the most Fabulous Burberry Trench.  That falls under the category “It costs more but it’s worth it”.  That is on my wish list! ( Note to file…don’t go looking for Donna in her Burberry trench, because she really doesn’t wear it, as she’s afraid to ruin it.  Can’t say I blame her. ) ;)

Signature Scarf or Shawl  – The right scarf  or shawl can add instant impact to a suit, a dress or a crisp white shirt. Pick one in a bold color or vivid pattern; tie it around your neck or onto your purse handle, or twist it and wear it as a simple, but vibrant, belt.  Or wear classic black, and say hello to your new best friend!

Sunglasses – The easiest way to class up any outfit—for work or weekend—is with a super-classy (and UV-protective) pair of fashion sunglasses. A general rule of thumb when shopping for the perfect pair: Rounded frames soften a square jaw line, square frames slim cheeks and rectangular frames add width and dimension to your face.  These are my Burberry sunglasses, which I got on sale at Nordstrom www.nordstrom.com for less than $90.  I wear them every single day, and they came with a fabulous  Burberry hard case to protect them.  I Never leave home without them!

Your perfect Handbag - I suggest 2: one large, and one clutch.  I also use my large tote for a laptop bag.  No need to have to carry a boring brief-case to carry your laptop.  I throw my small clutch in the large tote, and use it as a wallet .  I also carry the small clutch on its own.  I make sure my small clutch is large enough to carry what I need to carry:  2 cell phones; lipstick; small (really small) wallet; pen and 5 business cards (which also doubles as a note card).  And, needs to be able to hold my keys, which I do not have tons of keys on my key chain.  Only car and house key.

These are all basics.  I didn’t note any high heel pumps, since I’ve dedicated 3 previous blogs to shoes, my sense if you know my position on fabulous high heel shoes…the More the Merrier!  You can find any of these wardrobe essentials  at Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic,  or Etcetera :) .   Of course, you can also  just google any of these items.   I do this when I want something specific to ensure I am getting the best possible price.   I have built my entire wardrobe around these staples.  Black, Red, and White works best are the cornerstone of my color palette.  And building a wardrobe around a color scheme will be a future blog. :)

    Accessories…Don’t leave home without them!

    1 Apr

I adore accessories!  They can take an outfit from boring or bland, and give it pizzazz and style.   They are y life line.  And,  like shoes, you never have a fat day with accessories.   And I must say, I’m getting a lot of mileage out of that quote! :)

Fashion accessories are ”decorative items that supplement and complement clothes, such as jewelry, gloves, handbags, hats, belts, scarves, watches, sunglasses, pins, stockings, bow ties, leg warmers, leggings , neckties, suspenders, and tights”.  (Thanks Wikipedia).  And horror of all horrors, Fanny Packs are making a comeback.  Yup, that’s right…and I’ll save that for a future blog!

Accessories can add color, style and class to an outfit, and create a certain look, but they can also have a practical function: handbags can be used to carry small items such as cash, lipstick and your cellphone, hats are stylish, yet  protect the face in bad weather (but a hat can be an all day decision, so make it wisely), and gloves and mittens keep hands warm.  Long gone are the days where women wore long leather gloves that were part of an outfit.  Think Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany.  Accessories,  thankfully, can be both fashionable and functional.    Jewelry of course is all about fashion!  Of course , you could argue a tip clip could be both, but let’s not argue with me.

Handbags - along with shoes, are a girl’s best friend.  I change my handbag daily to match my outfit.  Truly.  It takes all of 2 minutes, and it makes me happy.  I’ve been collecting handbags for years, and now angle towards more unique handbags, so I don’t carry the same pocketbooks (as my friend Kathy calls them) as everyone else.  And this Burberry number is not mine, but I liked it so wanted to post a picture of it.   Check out eBay (www.ebay.com) for gently used high-end designer handbags.  Make sure they are authentic, but this is a great way to add a fabulous designer handbag to your collection.  And for a change, I am Not featuring a black handbag!

Shoes!  Women have a love affair with shoes.  It’s funny, the older I get, the higher my heel gets.   I’m sure this personal trend will soon come to a crashing halt, when I take a major fall.  Not that I haven’t already! ;)

Jewelry – I wear jewelry every single day.  I don’t feel dressed without wearing  earrings, my rings, and at least one bracelet.  I also love vintage jewelry, and have found some truly fantastic pieces at the Flea Market.   Jewelry, can be elegant, personal or simply statement pieces, and can include:

Necklaces – Dainty, or chunky.  It changes the look.  It took me forever to realize it was necklace (neck/lace),  Decoration for the neck!  This Tiffany shoe necklace decorates my neck almost everyday, and while I’m sure Mer Mer helped Kevin pick it out, pretty much was a perfect gift for me.    Again, he didn’t have to break the bank with this one.

Earrings -  Stud, Chandelier, hoops, funky pair … If  you only own 4 pair of earrings, these would be 4 good choices.  And the stud earrings are cubic zirconia, and about $20.  No need to break the bank.  Actually each of these is less than $70.  www.nordstrom.com.

Bangles - $49 Nordstrom.  These come in silver, gold, or a combo of the two.  You can wear all 30 at the same time, or divide them up.  Brings sparkle, snap and fun to any outfit.  I received a set of these from my friend Donna, and I wear them all the time.

Bracelets - Kevin gave me a gold Tiffany charm bracelet in 1996, before the silver one became all the rage.  This bracelet works for young and the not so young.  I also have a silver one, as does Meredith.  This is a timeless piece of jewelry.  I also appears every young woman under the age of 25 has one as well.  Accessory staple!

This tennis bracelet is real (it’s a picture from the web), but you can get wonderful swarovski crystal bracelets for less than $100, and no one can tell the difference.  Brings a lovely amount of bling to your day.

Rings – these are the statement, aka cocktail rings, that we spoke of in the spring trends blog.  Cocktail rings, are not just for cocktail parties anymore!  And all of these are costume jewelry.  Check out  www.abernook.com for some great snappy cocktail rings!

Accessories…don’t leave home without them! :)

86% of women lie about hiding their shoe purchases. :)

    25 Mar

The headline read,  Breaking news…”14% of women hide their shoe purchases”… what is better than this is the comment from a reader that read,  Breaking news…”86% of women lie about hiding their shoe purchases”.  :)

I am reprinting this article from the Chicago Tribune, because it’s timely, it’s fashion-related, and it is so true.  I have edited a portion of it.  I am also concerned that not enough people read it, and since I now have over 5000 Lifetime Views on my blog (Yippee), I thought this was a great venue to get this fabulous article more exposure… well, at least 70 views today.   Plus, I agree…many more than 14% of women lie about this…And I must admit,  I am part of this crowd.  Having Kevin work in San Francisco does have its advantages. :)

Line up seven women, and at least one likely has a covert pair of shoes she bought but didn’t tell her significant other about because they cost so much. (Or if you are Terry O’Brien, perhaps 99 pairs)

But oh, shoe shopping certainly makes many women happier. The average American woman owns at least 17 pairs of shoes, though many women have three times that many. (Or if you are Terry O’Brien, perhaps 6x that amount).

Such are a few of the shoe insights that  ShopSmart  magazine found in their survey of 1,009 American women, offering something of a window into the female mind, or at least their credit card statements.

“Shoes are like boys and chocolate, you see a pair somewhere that you like, and you can’t stop thinking about them,” said Sharon Britton of Tampa, Fla., while opening her closet and guessing she may have three times the average of 17. That puts her in the top 13 percent of shoe fans.

“Shoes never make your butt look big, you don’t have to worry about squeezing into them if you’ve put on a couple of pounds, and they can instantly make you feel sexier,” said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart, published by the parent organization of Consumer Reports. “Maybe that’s why, despite the economy, we’re still buying shoes.”  (I do believe I blogged about this 2 weeks ago!  Perhaps I was the inspiration for this article! ;) )

Some other shoe insights from ShopSmart:

    – Over half of women own more than 10 pairs, and 13 percent have more than 30 pairs. That’s not including athletic shoes.  (I  must have 60 pairs of black shoes, alone…and I’m underestimating that, lest you judge me).

    – Women typically buy three pairs a year, and on average spend $49 per pair, but, nearly one-third have spent more than $100 on a single pair. (I almost always buy my shoes on sale, and buy way more than 3 pairs annually…I mean, Really!)

    – Almost unheard of even five years ago, online shoe shopping is now a “national obsession,” with a third of women regular online shoe buyers. Zappos.com, for instance, says some of their top customers “spend well over $10,000 annually.”  (I rarely go into a shoe store to buy shoes…almost all of it is online.  Ask nordstrom.com).

    – About one in five women go shoe shopping just to cheer themselves up.  (And everyone asks why I’m always happy?)

–While 86 percent of women say they tell their significant other about shoe purchases, 14 percent admit to “hiding at least one purchase.” (Yes, Yes, and Yes…again, having Kevin work in San Francisco Does has its advantages).

As for the kinds of shoes women are buying, most prefer low-rises, but occasionally go for height. Almost 40 percent say flats are their favorite, 8 percent wear heels over 2 1/2 inch high on regular basis, and one-quarter of women wear 4-inch heels for a special occasion. (The older I get, the higher my heels).

About half of women bought an “ugly” pair for comfort, but more women lately are willing to withstand pain for fashion — 60 percent vs. 49 percent in 2007, and 6 in 10 women carry a backup pair to change into after a party or event. (I agree…fashion over function).

That fashion can inflict a physical price too.  (Moleskin and Footpetals are best sellers for a really good reason).

About half of women have shoe related blisters, sprains or even broken bones, and one in three had “an evening ruined by an uncomfortable pair of shoes” and one in four said they’ve had a fall.  (I’ve done all of the above).

    Source:  Chicago Tribune

Shoes are the new cupcakes…very trendy, all the rage, very 2011 (unlike cupcakes which, according to Meredith, are very 2010).  The fact that the Chicago Tribune has articles about shoes makes me giddy.  I feel that Journalism is finally “getting it”…and we no longer have to read about Charlie Sheen and ‘Duh Winning’…but about Shoes!  And That’s what I call a good day. :)

I have a bet with my “boss”, and he will shortly be buying me these Christian Louboutin’s, Retail $750…but who cares, since I’m not paying…and don’t have to smuggle them in the house!  Oh Happy Day! :)

    Who’s your Paddy?

    14 Mar

Green is not a color I gravitate towards in my daily wardrobe…that’s because I angle towards black!  I was curious as to the origin of wearing of the green, and went to my trusty source, Google!  There are many different answers, but my favorite was:  Because it’s fun to wear Green and you don’t get pinched. :)

However, since I do desire that my blogs be not only witty, but  useful, this is the answer I feel best works for “why we wear green” on St. Paddy’s Day….and let’s face it, the World is Irish on March 17th.

The Origin of Wearing of the Green

Originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. In the 1798 rebellion, in hopes of making a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching public attention. The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from a song of the same name.  (source..Wikipedia!)

The origin of getting pinched if you don’t wear green:

It’s thought that the pinching started in the early 1700s, about the time that awareness of St. Patrick’s as a holiday came to  Boston, in the Massachusetts colony. They thought if you wore green, it made you invisible to the leprechaun’s, which was good because they would pinch anyone they could see. So the pinching is to warn and remind you about the leprechaun’s.

Pinching those not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day is an American tradition, having really nothing to do with Ireland or St. Patrick Wrong.  The truth is,” Irish people think Americans are crazy”. St. Patrick’s Day is not even remotely celebrated over there as heavily as it is in the US.  God bless the USA! :)

And in keeping with my “style theme”, and I again use this term loosely, I thought I’d offer up some ideas so you too can be a “wearer of the Green” on St. Patrick’s Day.  Truly, you can get in the spirit of the Irish, and wear green without looking like a leprechaun!

Green Watch – I own one  from  Anne Klein, and since I don’t always wear green, I wear it on St. Paddy’s Day…of course, with my standard costume of black and white, green can be the accessory color

Emeralds!  I have an emerald tennis bracelet that I rarely wear.  Love it, and note to file…I can wear it on days other than St. Paddy’s day!  Also, any other type of green costume jewelery or a green tie clip!

    Green Tie!

    Green Sweater Set

Green Shoes…High Heels would be quite festive and put you in the party spirit.    These are Christian Louboutin and they are ultra fabulous…and will set you back about 8 hundo!

A Green Sport Coat – my brother-in-law, Bruce, my first male blog follower used to wear one on this special holiday.  Actually, it’s been brought to my attention that he still does…anywho…This little number is from Ralph Lauren and rings in at $1999.  Not sure this is the one Bruce wears:

Truly any green will do, any with the exception of the Green Eyed Monster…don’t look longingly at those celebrating St. Patrick’s Day…join in the Fun.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to one and all…and I am so happy that I not only have my own Patrick to celebrate with, but Mer Mer is on spring break, so all 4 of us will be together…and I may partake in a few libations to toast the day.  I will skip the chard and indulge in some Stella Artois!  I know my brother-in-law, Bruce will be enjoying some Guiness..as he refers to it as “mothers milk” …like an angel crying on your tongue”.  I feel that way about Far Niente Chardonnay! ;)

    An Old Irish Blessing
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
    wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
    with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours!

    And a few Irish Toasts!

May God grant you many years to live, for sure he must be knowing, the earth has angels all too few and heaven is overflowing…

    Always remember to forget
    The troubles that passed away.
    But never forget to remember
The blessings that come each day.

May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been,
The foresight to know where you are going,
And the insight to know when you have gone too far.

May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.

    Celebrate responsibly!

There was an old man who lived in a shoe

    7 Mar

He had so many options, he didn’t know what to do…until now. :)

A few basic refresher points for my “male fan base”. :)

    Shoes

Buy some new shoes. Don’t let your work shoes be your weekend wear shoes, your dressy casual shoes, or “you’re doing the lawn” shoes. Brown and tan shoes are a must and should show up in both your work and dressy casual wardrobe.  Sneakers or tennis shoes should never be worn with anything except a work out outfit.
Lace up shoes are preferred with Suits.

Belts must match the shoe – Remember that one of the oldest fashion rules is the matching of shoes and belts. Try to select these accessories in matching colors. Such choices will add completeness to your outfit and will demonstrate that you are aware of fashion trends.

See how this does not captivate the look you want?

100% leather - invest in good shoes.  Your feet will thank you.  I will thank you.

Formal is always Black - think George Clooney.  Always black shoes at the Academy Awards.

Typically, any shoe color goes with any suit color.  and while lace-up is preferred, there are also great other options out there, if you choose to gravitate away from laced-up shoes.

    Colors

    Brown

    Black

    English Tan

    Flip Flops

For reasons that shall remain to myself, I am OFTEN asked about my thought on men wearing flip-flops or “Mandals”  as Mer Mer refers to them, with pants.  I, personally, am not a fan. Especially for business.   But again…if it makes you happy, and you are comfortable, go for it.   Some of my favorite people gravitate towards this look.   If the weather is warm, “mandals” may be the only option.  I only ask that you do not wear socks with the flip-flops or  ”mandals”.   I only provide guidelines and tips, and may occasionally snicker behind one’s back (Kidding)… It’s all about what makes you feel good.   Or what makes your feet feel good.  Happy feet make for happy people.    If you do choose to show some skin (on your feet), just make sure to treat yourself to a little foot-freshening session — clipping, scrubbing or for those completely secure with their masculinity, a professional pedicure.

It can be downright difficult to find a men’s sandal that is both simple and stylish if you want something other than flip-flops. The solution: a cross-strap sandal. There are no bells and whistles here; just two uncomplicated straps to hold your foot in place. It’s also the perfect sandal if you find a traditional flip-flop that slips on between your toes to be uncomfortable. Just be careful not to go with certain faux-leather types or you could risk looking like grandpa at the retirement home.  And leave the socks at home! :)

Mandals – man sandal-a men’s summer shoe, that consists of black or brown leather that covers more than 50% of the foot, buckles and a thick sole. ”His mandals match his man purse”.   (Urban Dictionary).  Here is a picture of a perfectly fine mandal.  I just happen to think it can look silly wearing it with dress pants, khaki’s , or jeans.

    Socks

    * Over the calf is preferred with suits

    * A shade darker than trouser for work

    * A shade lighter than trouser for casual

    * Black is always acceptable

Socks should match or complement the Shoe

And to further drive my point home, I would appreciate it if you chose Not to  wear socks with sandals…Ever.  But that’s just me…and here is how a picture is worth a 1000-words. :)

    xoxo

    T.

PS – Truly, you will save yourself many , many hours over your lifetime, if you safety-pin your socks together when washing and drying them.  And I have often been asked if I , indeed do this, and the answer is an overwhelming YES.

Spring Forward…fashion trends for the season

    18 Feb

With new seasons come new styles…but what to wear, what to wear?  Etcetera has made it easy, so thought I’d share their take on the new trends.  Because it’s not always easy to understand “fahionese”, even for this gal, I’ve included some photo accompaniments. :)

“Get ready to fall in love with how you’ll look this spring. We’re mad for the minimal, the nautical, the asymmetrical; sheaths, short-shorts, zippers; grooving on the 70s.”

    1.  trend: Minimalism

One of the biggest trends to walk the runways. Clean lines.  Pure perfection. Little black dress, trendy pants, killer Capris and the best boyfriend jacket ever.

    2.  trend: White Now

Nothing comes close to the whites of spring. Ultra-hip with ruching, rivets, metallic fabrics, corseted waists, rows of boxy pleats, tiers of crepey ruffles and exposed zips where you least expect them

    3.  trend: In Neutral

Colors are strictly au naturale. Sands, creams, brimstone mochas, bitter chocolates. Here is a multitude of pieces that melt through your wardrobe with fresh, crisp, witty, feminine, fashion-forward style.

    4.  trend: Asymmetry

Modern as it gets. It’s about bare, sexy shoulders, off-center draping, asymmetrical closures, angled tiers, overlapping folds and a little black dress with a little of everything.

    5. trend: Zip It

It’s open season on zippers. Definitely edgy but less hardcore. Exposed at pockets, cuffs, shoulders, asymmetrical closures; on a motorcycle jacket, at the ruffles of a trench, tied into a bow at the scoop of a tee.

    6.   trend: The Sheath

Long stemmed beauties. Sexy, iconic, an absolute must. The sleekest silo since the 60s. The overwhelming WOW of it all found in luxe fabrics, flawless style and a fit that’s beyond your wildest dreams.

    7.   trend: On Deck

Go nautical. Slip into something see-worthy. Find boatloads of ribby, stretchy, spiffy stripes, mad plaids, dress whites. Seaside classics with a whole new attitude. Bye-bye, preppy. Ahoy there, pizzazz.

    8.   trend: Short-shorts

The next big thing done in a killer metallic, a white bermuda, a bevy of mini-pleats; a slim-leg cut to here, wide-legs cut to there. Top with a jacket, cardie, floral blouse, one-shoulder tee and voilá! a fashion superstar is born.

    9.   trend: Bold & Beautiful

You’ve gotta stock-up on the boldest pinks, greens, oranges, purples and blues. To wear solo or mixed into the most beautiful tapestries, abstracts, colorblocks, botanic and groovy 70s prints.

    10.   trend: Seventies

The decade’s back. Big time. More hip than hippie. Retro silos. Fluid fabrics. Vibrant colors. Batiks, mosaics, ikats, florets, animal abstracts; ruffles, sequins, studs. Pick-up something glam to go-with.

    And Color:

Look out for extreme color plays. White a must. Natural the new neutral. Bold the best of the rest.

    The standouts:

    *brimstone iced mocha.

    *bitter chocolate bittersweet.

    *sandbox cream of the crop.

    *wild rose cracker jack fuchsia.

    *apricot a pop of pink-orange.

    *red where’s the fire.

    *asparagus sunny Chartreuse.

    *pacific warm turquoise blue.

    *daffodil mellow yellow.

    *black ready, jet-set, go.

    Source:  Etcetera (of course). :)

And from Nordstrom (courtesy of my fellow fashionista friend Donna), here are their “trends”, with “Terry’s-take” on each.

    1. PALE NEUTRALS - what about my standard Black?  Black is the new frugal (for You Cinda) :)
    2. THE FIT-AND-FLARE DRESS – hides what should be hidden.  A girl’s best friend…a flare dress. :)
    3. THE KITTEN HEEL – please don’t.  Not a fan, but the cheetah number below is kinda cute
    4. THE ROMANTIC BLOUSE – Love it.  I have several.  You should too.
    5. THE FRAMED SATCHEL – like my Glenda Gies favorite handbags!!
    6. FLARED- & WIDE-LEG PANTS – love wide leg pants for my wide legs.
    7. MAXI DRESSES & SKIRTS  – the Terry jury is still out on these
    8. STATEMENT RINGS – look for a future blog on Lord of the Rings (and Kevin is the Lord)
    9. THE MINIMAL JACKET – nothing like a minimal jacket to maximize your look
    10. MODERN OXFORDS – this, is Not a shirt, but those shoes, that look like bowling or golf shoes.

    xoxo,

    T.

Because this blog is more “informational” than normal, I thought I’d try to delight my followers with extra Someecard and Bluntcards.

    Enjoy!

And this one has No Fashion correlation, but I find it really funny…and timely as far as cold and season goes…and I do hate when anyone or anything robs me of attention.
