What your Clothing Color Says about You

2 Nov

I always wear black…I will fall just short of saying it’s my signature color, as that can be construed as being a bit morbid.  And, as I’ve mentioned in the past, I don’t wear it to try to look “thinner”, as it would need a Whole lot of Black for that, however, I’m quite clumsy, and tend to fall and spill on myself, so black doesn’t  quite show the stains that yellow or white would.  This illustration indicates what “Your Clothing Color Says About You”.  In regards to what my “almost signature color” says about me, I’m pretty approachable, not powerful nor authoritative, but try to angle towards being stylish. :)

When searching for the perfect color to wear to an interview or important business meeting, consider What your Clothing Color Says about You!

I could have gone to Great Lengths to find business-appropriate clothing in these colors to show the point of this post…and truth be told, I did, so clearly not all of these outfits are appropriate for interviews, but I like all these outfits, and as we know, I like to post pictures of outfits I like!  Plus…I believe that this color code works in all facets of life, not just in business settings.

When trying to find cute outfits in the above colors, Black , White and Red were the easiest to find.  It was hard to find good options in Purple and Green!  No wonder most of us wear black, white and sometimes red…and as we know there isn’t a woman’s clothing store called Purple House Green Market!  Black and White are the easiest colors to find!! :)

Whatever color you choose, Love what you wear, wear it with Pride and  I’m sure you’ll look just Fabulous!

Happy Weekend.

Upcoming blogs…Murphy Monday…in lieu of MANic Monday, next week’s Monday post will be all about the musings of Murphy…and how Murphy has learned to be Dressed to a T!

And Blonde and Virgo!

Why yes…I do have an athletic body type…that of a Bowler! :)

30 Sep
If Loving Fashion is a Crime, I’m Guilty as Charged! :)

And yet we have another age-old fashion question…how to dress for our body types and shapes?

It has taken me 3 months of compiling various articles from magazines, books (via Kindle on my iPad) and the internet to give a complete picture of What to Wear for one’s Body Shape…Because this blog is longer than the norm, I have provided a Cliff Notes version at the end of this blog.

Styling Rules do Not apply to everyone.   As a matter of fact, they should be customized to the individual.  What looks good on one person, can look not-so-terrific on another.  Since everyone comes in different body sizes and shapes, we can learn what to wear and what to avoid in order to best flatter our body shape.

You need to learn what your body type is.  Once you understand your body type, it’s easier to dress in ways that best flatter your figure.  I only wish there wasn’t this god-awful picture depicting “Apple”, “Athletic”, etc…could it be anymore unflattering?

Apple or Inverted Triangle Shape

Larger shoulders and or bust; excess weight often accumulates around the tummy.

Inverted triangle or apple-shaped women can showcase great legs and create an attractive silhouette by creating balance between a larger bust and shoulders and thinner legs. Clothing combinations that works well for this body type includes:

• Short skirts paired with slimming tunic tops
• V-neck tops worn with boot cut or slightly flared mid-rise jeans
• Blouses with a slightly nipped waist with flared skirts
• One button jackets with an above-the waist stance with wide leg trousers
• A-line solid color dresses

Dark and solid colors for tops work great for apple shapes because they create a more balanced appearance with their slimmer legs.

Pear or Triangle Shape

Narrower shoulders and upper torso; weight gain can be seen in hips, legs, and thighs.
Clothing for this body shape should balance out heavier legs and hip areas with a slimmer top half. Do this with clothing choices such as:

• Just-below-the-knee length plain colored skirts with patterned blouses
• Boot cut jeans paired with boat neck or scoop neck tops
• A-line skirts with three-quarter sleeve wrap blouses
• Straight leg trousers with jackets that hit slightly above the hip
• Wrap dresses in simple prints or solids

Pear body types can usually opt for darker colored bottoms and have fun exploring lots of print and design in terms of tops to create a proportionate appearance and draw eyes upward.

Rectangular or Straight Shape

Often a slim or athletic figure; this body type has fewer defined curves and extra weight does not show up in one prominent area.

Ladies with rectangular or ruler shaped bodies are considered lucky by many because they are often slender in build. The challenge for this body type is typically that women want to appear more curvy and feminine. Clothing options for straight body shapes to create curves include:

• Pencil skirts paired with belted jackets
• Blouses with ruching or other dimensional details with flared- leg jeans
• Cap neck or polo shirts worn with modern boot cut trousers or jeans
• Dresses with a fitted bodice or nipped waist and full skirt
• Layered ensembles

Rectangle body shapes can also wear item like shift dresses that can be constricting to curvier figures. Contrasting styles, such as bulky sweaters and slim jeans, can also work to break up the vertical lines of a ruler shaped figure.

Hourglass

Defined waist and curvy figure; extra weight shows up in both the bust and hip area.

With a defined waist and feminine curves, the hour-glass figure fits many styles of clothing without trouble. To show off a classic hourglass, consider the following clothing choices:

• Flared jeans with scoop neck tees
• Three-quarter length slitted skirts with v-neck wrap blouses
• Nipped waist jackets worn with straight leg trousers
• Halter style or classic dresses

The right clothing for different body shapes can truly help women bring out their best physical attributes. Have confidence no matter what your shape with clothes that fit and flatter!

And because this blog is extra long (LAP), I have provided the cliff notes version:

QUICK TIPS

1.   Wear the right clothes for your body shape and you’ll fill out and slim down areas, creating a proportional body shape with no heavy point that interrupts the eye.

2.   Choose the right cut and length to make a wide rear  (and thighs), boyish hips and a full torso look less noticeable.

3.   Your goal is to create a visually balanced yet feminine body – making it look like your bust and shoulders are at the same width as your hips.

4.   If your hips are greatly wider than the shoulders, then add more volume to your top half.

5.   If you have a straight waist, find clothes that will add dimensions to your upper and lower part, making your torso look narrower in comparison.

6.   Choose clothing that fits properly every time, from the dresses to business suits. Whether you have an angular or ultra curvy figure, are short or tall, clothing that is either baggy or too tight will not be flattering on any figure.

7.   Another tip that applies to all the different body shapes is: don’t buy an item of clothing just because it’s trendy. Not every trend works on every body type. Classic clothing for different body shapes can be purchased in more modern cuts, and you can accent your base wardrobe with a few pieces of trend clothing that are appropriate for your body

Since I had over 700 views on Sunday alone, after that travesty that one may have called the Bears v Packers game (though admittedly,  did I have a great time at the game), I may write an addendum to my previous blog(s) re: Jay Cutler needs a Life Coach.  I think Jay Cutler needs an Offensive Line.  And the Bears could Also use a Life Coach!

Happy Dressing!  And that also goes for those Chicago Bears!

A woman walked into a bar carrying a duck under her arm. “Get that pig out of here!” yelled the bartender. “That’s not a pig, stupid!” she replied, “That’s a duck!” “I know!” said the bartender, “I was talking to the duck!”  :)

Don’t be a Fashion Victim

29 Jul
Fashion Victim:  The fashion police should arrest all such persons. they can be identified easily, all their clothing will have designer logos, they will be perfectly manicured, groomed and waxed and buffed. But instead of looking chic they will look “over the top” because they have no real taste or style. The mark of a true fashion victim is wearing every “faddish” trend that comes out. (Urban Dictionary)

Dress fashionably, but don’t be a fashion victim.

There’s a big difference between being a slave to the latest trends and being aware of them. You want the latter. Every season, the fashion industry presents hundreds of trends. Some are exciting, some are fun, some are silly, and some are downright Ridiculous. Your mission is to be a smart shopper and buy only the trends that work for you—your body, your personality, your lifestyle.

Fashion coach Susan Sommers, whose business, Dresszing, helps women shop in their closets, advises her clients to ask themselves, “What one or two pieces will make my wardrobe pop right now?” The pieces don’t have to be super expensive, but they should be of the moment and the color and style should mix well with at least two items you already own. If the of-the-moment item is pricey, before you splurge ask yourself, “Is this something I can wear after this season is over?” Treat your wardrobe as an art collection, and curate it with looks that are worth the investment because they go the distance. If you have doubts, skip it. Know that you can always add a hit of style with more disposable items, like costume jewelry and other fun, instant-gratification accessories.

And that was yet Another Fun Excerpt from How Not to Look Old: Fast and Effortless Ways to Look 10 Years Younger, 10 Pounds Lighter, 10 Times Better by Charla Krupp. Loving my new bible! :)

Confessions of a Shopaholic.  Loved the book, did Not love the movie, which was also the victim of Bad Timing!  A movie about an obsessive compulsive shopaholic at the start of a recession, had disaster written all over it…as did this outfit.

Don’t follow a trend if you don’t love it, and don’t love you in it.    Wear what makes you look good, and feel good about yourself.    Just because something is trendy, does not mean you need to follow that trend..(Jeggings)!

Top Ten Worst Fashion Fads

We’ve all fallen victim to poor fashion choices. Sometimes we go out looking unkept or not up to snuff, sometimes we make the mistake of wearing jeans to a formal occasion (not I, but I hear it can happen) or a LBD to a parent-teacher conference (;) ).  You’ll be pleased to know that You are not alone.  Bad fashion choices are everywhere, and here is a  list of some of the worst fashion fads in history:

  1. Those mega shoulder pads, which date back to the 80’s- we all thought that bigger was better, and some of us aspired to look like well-padded up quarterbacks!  I had Norma Kamali dresses and tops in the 80′s…and thought they were Fabulous!  They were not, and I looked like a linebacker.  But lived and died via the fashion of Dynasty!
  2. Ponchos.  I personally much prefer my shawl! :)
  3. Spandex pants, which Olivia Newton-John made famous in ‘Grease’.  Suddenly everyone was wearing them.   Think Peg Bundy.  These were styled like jeans, but fit super tight.  And were super unattractive.  They didn’t look good on anyone, except Sandy in Grease!
  4. The awful fashion trend of big hair or Bouffount Hair – And I’m not referring to “poofy” hair.  I’m referring to Over the Top, Overly Teased, Bouffant Hair, where you could hide a small family of mice in (sorry, mice still scare the daylights out of me).    That kind of style defied the law of gravity, and made the head look out of proportion.  Now poofy hair, I’m all for it!
  5. Those dreadful pants with writing on the back – stuff like “Hot” or “Wow” printed on the backside.  Let the lewd comments begin.  Reminds me of a joke…”A girl is walking by with ‘Guess’ on her t-shirt.  The man passed by and said “Thyroid problem?”  Having writing or a question on any item of clothing is just Asking for trouble!
  6. Bellbottoms. Whatever possessed  people to wear them?  The shape was odd, often they came in really ghastly colors, and most of the time, it looked so terribly tacky!  Plus didn’t the bellbottoms get caught in your heels, sofa bottoms, and the brakes in your car?  They say that fashion comes full circle, so my fear is bell bottoms are coming back, since we are now on skinny jeans!
  7. Tattoos – 2 words.  Please don’t.  And while it may look great now, it will Not when you are over 50.  Or over 40 for that matter. Actually, I don’t think it EVER looks great!    And do NOT even get me started of the “tramp stamp”!  I mean, Really?!
  8. Crocs – they’re still around, but why? They look really unattractive, rather like a “blob of rubber” stuck on your feet.   Though I do realize that those in the medical profession wear them because they are comfortable.  But please don’t wear them with a skirt, or out to dinner.  Or perusing the streets of Fisherman’s Wharf or Michigan Avenue!
  9. Low-rise jeans -  Seriously, don’t let your hips and backside hang out.  Seems everyone is sporting their “plumbers crack”.  Not a good look…even if you have the body to pull it off.    And if you have jeans that you absolutely Love, and are too low, you can wear a long cami, underneath your shirt, to cover any skin that may show.  And please add Acid-washed jeans this list.
  10. Leisure Suits – Ugh!  That’s all I can say.  My goodness…and the colors they came in. Again, it’s a walking Saturday Night Live skit.  Oh yeah, I wasn’t supposed to elaborate.
  11. And Lastly, another terrible fashion fad – harem pants. What was wrong with them? Too many pleats, too low-waisted, and they just didn’t look good! Totally the wrong thing to wear to college or let alone to an office.  And I’m Not naming names! MC Hammer!  Barbara Eden is the only person who should ever wear these pants!

And Lastly, sadly, I believe poor Greg Olsen will be a fashion victim wearing a Carolina Panthers jersey…what were the Bears thinking?!  I am Not happy with that move!

Have a wonderful weekend! :)

xoxo,

T.

This picture is in no way supposed to be a Fashion Victim…I love it, actually.

Yes, You Can Wear White after Labor Day…

6 May

And other Fashion Rules debunked…

It used to be considered the biggest Fashion Faux Pas to wear white after Labor Day.  Today, however, winter white and other off-white colors are gradually gaining acceptance as a fall and winter fashion staple. Not wearing white after Labor Day is an outdated fashion trend.  But I caution as to wearing cotton pants, or eyelet patterns in the winter.   Curious about some other fashion trends that may be outdated?  I googled fashion myths, and while these all came up as myths, I have to stand by my original statement, in previous blogs, and say that I actually agree with Myth #9…it is Not acceptable.  Read on to break your curiousity…And here is a list of the top ten fashion myths people still wonder about today.

Myth 1You can’t wear sandals after Labor Day. Reality: This is just as outdated as not wearing white after Labor Day. You can wear sandals fashionably any time of year, as long as the weather is appropriate for them.  And I’ve actually worn high heel sandals, with a LBD  (little black dress) to fancy occasions in February, with snow on the ground…that’s what husbands who drop their wives off at the door are for. :)

These are the sandals I wore with a black dress and velvet-black shawl with light pink accents,  to a school fundraiser, in February:

Myth 2You should wear suede shoes Only in the fall and winter. Reality: Yes, suede shoes look good with most Fall and Winter fashions, but there is nothing stopping you from wearing a fine pair of fabulous suede shoes any time of year.  And, I will take it a step further…I will indeed wear boots with summer skirts!  These red suede peep toe pumps, would look Smashing with a black pencil skirt, and white blouse.  Or pair them with your summer LBD.

Myth 3You have to cut your hair after 40 because middle age women shouldn’t have long hair. Reality: This is just false. In fact, long hair can look great on older women, even making them look younger. Look at Demi Moore. Her hair is incredibly long and she looks great! You should always select a style you like because it looks good, not because someone tells you that you have to wear your hair a certain length.  And I am continuing to grow my locks out longer.  Check out my previous blog,  “Hair today Gone tomorrow”, for more of my opinion on this subject.  http://dressedtoat.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/hair-today-gone-tomorrow/?preview=true&preview_id=522&preview_nonce=6752d256af

Myth 4You shouldn’t wear black in the spring and summer. Reality: While bright summery colors are fun, black works well any time of year including spring and summer. There is no reason not to wear black any time you want if you think it looks good.  If I couldn’t wear black in the summer, I would have nothing to wear!

Myth 5 – You should only wear diamonds in the evening. Reality: In “times of old”, it was considered a faux pas to wear diamonds during the day. This is not the case today, you can wear tasteful diamonds any way and any time you like!   I have a tennis bracelet that I wear everyday.  I received it for our 15th wedding anniversary, and while I told Kevin I didn’t think I could wear it everyday…he thought that was nonsense, and he didn’t buy it for me so I could put it in the safe (not that we have a safe…or not that we don’t have a safe, but not divulging that )…so I wear it everyday…not as much as Marilyn, but no one can pull off what she can.

Myth 6You can’t mix jewelry made from different colors of metal, like yellow and white gold. Reality: This is also ridiculous! You can mix any different colors you like as long as the combination is tasteful. You can even mix different metals like sterling silver, gold, platinum and more!  I love to mix and match, and thing that too “matchy-matchy” ages you.  I love to wear a rhinestone chunky necklace with jeans, white blouse, and cardigan.  And I love this, according to Urban Dictionary:  MATCHY MATCHY:  “Often used in fashion blogs. Used to describe an outfit that is too coordinated and consists of too many of the same types of colours, patterns, fabrics, accessories, designer pieces, thematic elements, etc. Can also be used in reference to interior design.”

Myth 7Wearing black at a wedding is bad luck or taboo. Reality: Today you can wear any color you like to a wedding. In fact, black is very appropriate for an evening wedding. The only color not encouraged during a wedding is white. You don’t want to outshine the bride after all!  Talk about bad luck!  Of course Pippa Middleton through caution to the wind, and just about outshined the bride. ;)

Myth 8Your shoe color needs to match your outfit. Reality: You can actually find shoes in several complementary colors that will likely look better than a shoe in the exact same color as your outfit.  Taupe and beige shoes for example go with almost any color.  I love the patterned boot with this outfit…It pops!  And while the Eva Longoria outfit is rather extreme for South Barrington, I think it looks terrific, and love a totally contrasting colored shoe to the outfit.

Myth 9You can’t wear nylons if you plan to wear open toed shoes. Reality: I have to say, I agree that you cannot wear nylons with open toed shoes.  I know they say for very sheer, sandal-toed hose, it would be “acceptable”…but we are better than “acceptable”, aren’t we?  Here is a picture of sandals with hose, and without.  You be the judge.

Sandals with hose:

And these are sandals Without hose:

Myth 10You can only wear velvet during fall and winter months. Reality: Today you can wear velvet any time of year. Velvet is more often seen in the fall and winter because it is a warmer fabric. However when worn during a formal occasion, velvet works well ay time of the year.  I have a black velvet shawl, that I use year-round for special occasions.  I could see wearing this little navy velvet bolero jacket with a white t-shirt, jeans, and black patent leather high heels!  Or swap out the jeans, for a black or white pencil skirt, with funky metallic belt.

Bonus extra:  Myth 11: Black and brown don’t match. Reality: Black and brown do match, and look quite sophisticated, too. Pair rich brown wool trousers with a black turtleneck, or wear black shoes and hose with your brown skirt. For evening, try a brown cocktail dress instead of a black one, and dress it up with this season’s black beaded necklaces or bracelets. One combo to avoid: Brown shoes with black pants.

There you have it, your Top Ten (make that 11) fashion myths uncovered. When it comes to fashion, it is more important that you look and feel good than you follow the rules of fashion ‘etiquette.’  Unless you are a celebrity or other public figure, most people would not dare comment on your outfit anyway, except to tell you how great you look. :)   To say anything else would be extremely disrespectful and indicative of poor judgment.  And that would not be being fabulous!  And face it, You are fabulous.

I was never a rule follower anyway!

xoxo,

T.

Happy Spring…the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming and Mer Mer comes home today for the summer!

Wardrobe Must-Haves

8 Apr

Yippee Ki Yay!  We are back to Fashion!

There are some items that you absolutely need ready and waiting in your closet. These make up the basis of your wardrobe; they’re the “must-haves” , no matter what your style — the wardrobe essentials. To be considered a wardrobe essential, an article of clothing has to have several important attributes:

  • It must be versatile. This is the most important quality of an essential piece of clothing. One key factor in versatility is color. Because wardrobe essentials have to go with lots of other clothing, they tend to be monochromatic and neutral in color. They also must work with different outfits. A jacket that you can pair with a skirt, pants, or a pair of jeans is a good example.
  • It has to be of good, perhaps even exceptional, quality. A wardrobe essential makes a statement, and anyone looking should be able to tell that it’s top shelf. High quality also means that it wears well, and for a very long time — very important for a garment that you’ll rely on again and again.
  • It should be in a classic style. You don’t want your wardrobe essentials to ever really go out of fashion.
  • It must be a 10 or a Wow!  These garments, like everything in your closet, should have all the qualities of a 10, and because they form the basis of your stylish wardrobe, it’s okay to spend a little more for these than you would for  other, less essential, items.
  • WARDROBE MUST HAVES OR GOTTA HAVE EM:

Black dress – The Little Black Dress (LBD) -  Should classic and  sophisticated (and dare I say teetering on sexy) . It should be well-made and fit like a glove. It should hide your flaws and accentuate your attributes. It can go from day (wear it to the office with a cardigan or blazer and a set of pearls and leather pumps) to night (take off the blazer or cardigan and add some  evening makeup,  funkier jewelry, and heels).

Black pants – A pair of high-quality, flat front, black trousers are a necessity in every wardrobe. Stay away from pleats because they only accentuate an area that no one really needs accentuating! If you can buy only one pair of trousers, select a length that matches the heel height you most commonly wear. And choose a lightweight wool that will work in summer or winter.  Like a great pair of jeans, if you find a pair you absolutely Love, Love, Love, buy a 2nd pair.

White blouse – Think of a white button-up blouse as your upper body’s version of black pants—it’s versatile enough to wear anywhere, with almost anything. Pair your white shirt over a bathing suit for a weekend getaway or with your favorite pants for work.  You can dress it up.  Dress it down.  It’s perfect.

Blue jeans - Whether faded or tailored, the right pair of jeans will make you feel fabulous every minute.  When you find a pair that you absolutely love, and fits perfectly, if you can swing it, but a 2nd pair. My new favorite brand is Kut from the Kloth.  I get them at Nordstrom.  I have the faded, ripped pair, and a darker denim.  Same fit. Different look. Ralph Lauren and Seven Jeans are 2 other great brands that work for me.

Sassy skirt – Every woman should have a knee-length black skirt that fits perfectly and gives her a slim appearance. The particular style is up to you (and what looks good on your body type): It can be a pencil skirt or an A-line skirt.  So that it can go from season to season, look for one that’s a lightweight wool.  I suggest one not too short, and not too long.  Just above the knee.  Pair it with boots, or high heel pumps.  Wear it with a turtleneck, or white blouse, or sweater set, or t-shirt with denim jacket.  Each gives the outfit a new fresh look.  Take it a step further, and make your black skirt, a black leather skirt…Leather is not just for clubbing anymore (not that I would know about clubbing).  I have a black leather skirt , slightly higher than the knee, which I pair with…you guessed it, white blouse, or a turtleneck, or a black suit jacket.  And, I’m able to wear it for work.  It’s a classic look, even with it being a leather skirt.

Flats - Give your feet a well-deserved break and get a fabulous pair of flats; try a knockout color like red. Heels aren’t the only way to fancy up your feet. From preppy-casual to peep-toe sexy, you’ll love the way the right flat shoes look with jeans, dresses and trousers.  These are a recommendation from my friend Donna, who finds Tory Burch flats, the most god-awfully uncomfortable shoes!  Attilio Giusti Leombruni.  And, pricey, yet worth it.  My #1 fashion advice (aside from a fabulous black shawl)…Life is too short to wear uncomfortable shoes.  Find shoes that feel good, and You will feel good.

Boots – According to the laws of fashion, when something has been around for three seasons or more it has the right to declare itself a “basic”.  Wear them with jeans, leggings, or a skirt or dress.   In fact a decent pair of  boots can catapult even the most boring outfit into a fashion wow.

Denim jacket  – I wear mine to dress up an outfit, or dress down an outfit.  One of my favorite looks is to pair a dress with a denim jacket.  I love wearing a wrap dress, denim jacket, and boots.  I also wear a black skirt, white t-shirt, chunky necklace and denim jacket.  Or, my black denim jacket, blue jeans, and white blouse, and high heel sandals.  This is the 3rd time I’ve posted this picture, but I just want to drive home my point…you can wear a black denim jacket with just about anything!  (Note…it is very difficult to pair a Blue denim jacket, with Blue denim jeans.  Do Not try this at home).

Wrap dress - I always feel great in a wrap dress.  you can wear it with a camisole  underneath, or skip the cami, and just flaunt what you have (or don’t in my case, and try to rely on your sense of humor).    I wear mine with boots, or high heel sandals, or my black patent leather peep toe pumps!  They’re easy to travel with, because they weigh next to nothing.  And you can dress them up with pearls, or dress them down with a denim jacket!

Cashmere Sweater  - Invest in a classic style in a statement-making, vibrant color to brighten up your wardrobe. A cashmere sweater is luxurious and versatile—you can wear it to the office, for an evening on the town or just chilling out at home.  Choose a v-neck or a sweater set.  You can pair it with jeans, pants, or a straight skirt, or wear it over your LBD.  You can get one in black, cream, or red…or an argyle print.  You can also look for a vintage one.  I have one that is a cream-colored Lacoste that was my Father’s, and I wear it belted with a skirt and boots.  Oh, and there’s always something on the bottom! ;)

Trench Coat – A basic belted trench coat is versatile and comes in a variety of fabric and color options. To avoid looking like a secret agent, choose a well-tailored option that hits right at (or below) the knee for a polished look.  I like Red, Black or White.  My friend Donna has the most Fabulous Burberry Trench.  That falls under the category “It costs more but it’s worth it”.  That is on my wish list! ( Note to file…don’t go looking for Donna in her Burberry trench, because she really doesn’t wear it, as she’s afraid to ruin it.  Can’t say I blame her. ) ;)

Signature Scarf or Shawl  – The right scarf  or shawl can add instant impact to a suit, a dress or a crisp white shirt. Pick one in a bold color or vivid pattern; tie it around your neck or onto your purse handle, or twist it and wear it as a simple, but vibrant, belt.  Or wear classic black, and say hello to your new best friend!

Sunglasses – The easiest way to class up any outfit—for work or weekend—is with a super-classy (and UV-protective) pair of fashion sunglasses. A general rule of thumb when shopping for the perfect pair: Rounded frames soften a square jaw line, square frames slim cheeks and rectangular frames add width and dimension to your face.  These are my Burberry sunglasses, which I got on sale at Nordstrom www.nordstrom.com for less than $90.  I wear them every single day, and they came with a fabulous  Burberry hard case to protect them.  I Never leave home without them!

Your perfect Handbag - I suggest 2: one large, and one clutch.  I also use my large tote for a laptop bag.  No need to have to carry a boring brief-case to carry your laptop.  I throw my small clutch in the large tote, and use it as a wallet .  I also carry the small clutch on its own.  I make sure my small clutch is large enough to carry what I need to carry:  2 cell phones; lipstick; small (really small) wallet; pen and 5 business cards (which also doubles as a note card).  And, needs to be able to hold my keys, which I do not have tons of keys on my key chain.  Only car and house key.

These are all basics.  I didn’t note any high heel pumps, since I’ve dedicated 3 previous blogs to shoes, my sense if you know my position on fabulous high heel shoes…the More the Merrier!  You can find any of these wardrobe essentials  at Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic,  or Etcetera :) .   Of course, you can also  just google any of these items.   I do this when I want something specific to ensure I am getting the best possible price.   I have built my entire wardrobe around these staples.  Black, Red, and White works best are the cornerstone of my color palette.  And building a wardrobe around a color scheme will be a future blog. :)

86% of women lie about hiding their shoe purchases. :)

    25 Mar

The headline read,  Breaking news…”14% of women hide their shoe purchases”… what is better than this is the comment from a reader that read,  Breaking news…”86% of women lie about hiding their shoe purchases”.  :)

I am reprinting this article from the Chicago Tribune, because it’s timely, it’s fashion-related, and it is so true.  I have edited a portion of it.  I am also concerned that not enough people read it, and since I now have over 5000 Lifetime Views on my blog (Yippee), I thought this was a great venue to get this fabulous article more exposure… well, at least 70 views today.   Plus, I agree…many more than 14% of women lie about this…And I must admit,  I am part of this crowd.  Having Kevin work in San Francisco does have its advantages. :)

Line up seven women, and at least one likely has a covert pair of shoes she bought but didn’t tell her significant other about because they cost so much. (Or if you are Terry O’Brien, perhaps 99 pairs)

But oh, shoe shopping certainly makes many women happier. The average American woman owns at least 17 pairs of shoes, though many women have three times that many. (Or if you are Terry O’Brien, perhaps 6x that amount).

Such are a few of the shoe insights that  ShopSmart  magazine found in their survey of 1,009 American women, offering something of a window into the female mind, or at least their credit card statements.

“Shoes are like boys and chocolate, you see a pair somewhere that you like, and you can’t stop thinking about them,” said Sharon Britton of Tampa, Fla., while opening her closet and guessing she may have three times the average of 17. That puts her in the top 13 percent of shoe fans.

“Shoes never make your butt look big, you don’t have to worry about squeezing into them if you’ve put on a couple of pounds, and they can instantly make you feel sexier,” said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart, published by the parent organization of Consumer Reports. “Maybe that’s why, despite the economy, we’re still buying shoes.”  (I do believe I blogged about this 2 weeks ago!  Perhaps I was the inspiration for this article! ;) )

Some other shoe insights from ShopSmart:

    – Over half of women own more than 10 pairs, and 13 percent have more than 30 pairs. That’s not including athletic shoes.  (I  must have 60 pairs of black shoes, alone…and I’m underestimating that, lest you judge me).

    – Women typically buy three pairs a year, and on average spend $49 per pair, but, nearly one-third have spent more than $100 on a single pair. (I almost always buy my shoes on sale, and buy way more than 3 pairs annually…I mean, Really!)

    – Almost unheard of even five years ago, online shoe shopping is now a “national obsession,” with a third of women regular online shoe buyers. Zappos.com, for instance, says some of their top customers “spend well over $10,000 annually.”  (I rarely go into a shoe store to buy shoes…almost all of it is online.  Ask nordstrom.com).

    – About one in five women go shoe shopping just to cheer themselves up.  (And everyone asks why I’m always happy?)

–While 86 percent of women say they tell their significant other about shoe purchases, 14 percent admit to “hiding at least one purchase.” (Yes, Yes, and Yes…again, having Kevin work in San Francisco Does has its advantages).

As for the kinds of shoes women are buying, most prefer low-rises, but occasionally go for height. Almost 40 percent say flats are their favorite, 8 percent wear heels over 2 1/2 inch high on regular basis, and one-quarter of women wear 4-inch heels for a special occasion. (The older I get, the higher my heels).

About half of women bought an “ugly” pair for comfort, but more women lately are willing to withstand pain for fashion — 60 percent vs. 49 percent in 2007, and 6 in 10 women carry a backup pair to change into after a party or event. (I agree…fashion over function).

That fashion can inflict a physical price too.  (Moleskin and Footpetals are best sellers for a really good reason).

About half of women have shoe related blisters, sprains or even broken bones, and one in three had “an evening ruined by an uncomfortable pair of shoes” and one in four said they’ve had a fall.  (I’ve done all of the above).

Shoes are the new cupcakes…very trendy, all the rage, very 2011 (unlike cupcakes which, according to Meredith, are very 2010).  The fact that the Chicago Tribune has articles about shoes makes me giddy.  I feel that Journalism is finally “getting it”…and we no longer have to read about Charlie Sheen and ‘Duh Winning’…but about Shoes!  And That’s what I call a good day. :)

I have a bet with my “boss”, and he will shortly be buying me these Christian Louboutin’s, Retail $750…but who cares, since I’m not paying…and don’t have to smuggle them in the house!  Oh Happy Day! :)

There was an old man who lived in a shoe

    7 Mar

He had so many options, he didn’t know what to do…until now. :)

A few basic refresher points for my “male fan base”. :)

    Shoes

Buy some new shoes. Don’t let your work shoes be your weekend wear shoes, your dressy casual shoes, or “you’re doing the lawn” shoes. Brown and tan shoes are a must and should show up in both your work and dressy casual wardrobe.  Sneakers or tennis shoes should never be worn with anything except a work out outfit.
Lace up shoes are preferred with Suits.

Belts must match the shoe – Remember that one of the oldest fashion rules is the matching of shoes and belts. Try to select these accessories in matching colors. Such choices will add completeness to your outfit and will demonstrate that you are aware of fashion trends.

See how this does not captivate the look you want?

100% leather - invest in good shoes.  Your feet will thank you.  I will thank you.

Formal is always Black - think George Clooney.  Always black shoes at the Academy Awards.

Typically, any shoe color goes with any suit color.  and while lace-up is preferred, there are also great other options out there, if you choose to gravitate away from laced-up shoes.

    Colors

    Brown

    Black

    English Tan

    Flip Flops

For reasons that shall remain to myself, I am OFTEN asked about my thought on men wearing flip-flops or “Mandals”  as Mer Mer refers to them, with pants.  I, personally, am not a fan. Especially for business.   But again…if it makes you happy, and you are comfortable, go for it.   Some of my favorite people gravitate towards this look.   If the weather is warm, “mandals” may be the only option.  I only ask that you do not wear socks with the flip-flops or  ”mandals”.   I only provide guidelines and tips, and may occasionally snicker behind one’s back (Kidding)… It’s all about what makes you feel good.   Or what makes your feet feel good.  Happy feet make for happy people.    If you do choose to show some skin (on your feet), just make sure to treat yourself to a little foot-freshening session — clipping, scrubbing or for those completely secure with their masculinity, a professional pedicure.

It can be downright difficult to find a men’s sandal that is both simple and stylish if you want something other than flip-flops. The solution: a cross-strap sandal. There are no bells and whistles here; just two uncomplicated straps to hold your foot in place. It’s also the perfect sandal if you find a traditional flip-flop that slips on between your toes to be uncomfortable. Just be careful not to go with certain faux-leather types or you could risk looking like grandpa at the retirement home.  And leave the socks at home! :)

Mandals – man sandal-a men’s summer shoe, that consists of black or brown leather that covers more than 50% of the foot, buckles and a thick sole. ”His mandals match his man purse”.   (Urban Dictionary).  Here is a picture of a perfectly fine mandal.  I just happen to think it can look silly wearing it with dress pants, khaki’s , or jeans.

    Socks

    * Over the calf is preferred with suits

    * A shade darker than trouser for work

    * A shade lighter than trouser for casual

    * Black is always acceptable

Socks should match or complement the Shoe

And to further drive my point home, I would appreciate it if you chose Not to  wear socks with sandals…Ever.  But that’s just me…and here is how a picture is worth a 1000-words. :)

    xoxo

PS – Truly, you will save yourself many , many hours over your lifetime, if you safety-pin your socks together when washing and drying them.  And I have often been asked if I , indeed do this, and the answer is an overwhelming YES.

    Fashionally Fabulous… at Any Age

    4 Feb
Dressing Your Age:  Fashion rules for every decade

No doubt these thoughts have gone through your mind when you’ve stood in front of the mirror: Am I dressing like my mother? Do I look like I’m wearing my daughter’s clothes? Am I dressing age appropriately?   With all the boundary breaking in fashion today, it is not always clear who should wear what.

First and foremost, style is about inner confidence. If you are 50 and dare to wear a mini, more power to you. (However, be prepared for heads to turn and eyebrows to raise if you don’t get it right.) If you tend to err on the safe side but still like to be in the fashion game, there are plenty of interesting and chic options out there for you, no matter what your age. Find out what’s best for you and you’ll always look and feel poised in your clothes.

What to consider when dressing for your age:

20s: There are no boundaries for twenty-somethings when it comes to fashion. It’s about personal style and adding whimsical touches you can get away with only when you’re younger, whether that means playing with color, mixing and matching, or wearing high heels and high hemlines.

30s: More pulled-together, serious looks are what your 30s are about, but you don’t have to be a total square. The trick is to experiment with fashion-forward styles while maintaining a level of polish.

40s: Classic silhouettes and colors may start to dominate your wardrobe, but each piece should be full of personality. Think interesting embellishment, feminine volume, and bursts of rich color and pattern.

50s: Refined, tasteful choices are the foundations of age-appropriate dressing. Tailoring and structure are key, as are clean lines and fuss-free pieces in a simple palette.

60s: Elegance is the idea, and so timeless, traditional pieces are the mainstays. Tweed suits, trousers, and coatdresses dominate the closet. Contrasting hues — black, white, and red — are the most chic.

70+: Looking dignified and distinguished is of the utmost importance — and that means splurging on a little luxury. Fabrics should be of the highest quality, and tailoring should be precise.

And always with Do’s, come Don’ts.  and let’s allow our pictures to be worth a 1000 words:

Heidi Klum is beautiful, and it appears she is deserving of her nickname “the Bod”, however, this skirt is really way, way too short.  And I’m sure there are many men out there who will beg to disagree with me.  :)   And I wonder what she looks like sitting…or just she just pose on the red carpet all night long?

    Men’s Fashion Do’s and Dont’s

    3 Jan

In an attempt to “shore up my Male fan base”…a few more Men’s Fashion Tips.  Some are new.  Some are refreshers.

    Enjoy!

    The Do’s

Do match your belt and shoes:   This is easy.  The colors don’t have to match exactly, but please don’t pair browns and blacks.

Do know when to wear a hat: Indoors in public settings, it’s nice to remove your hat, but other than that, feel free to protect your head or cover up hat hair with your favorite hat. Of course you must Always remove it during the National Anthem.  And for those men who are “thinning on top”, it’s a great idea to wear one in summer months to protect your scalp.

Visors?  Yeah, not a fan.  Stick to a baseball hat or fedora.  And Johnny Depp can basically rock any hat…but, again, not a visor. :)

Do know how to tell the difference between sport coats,  blazers, and suit jackets:  Sport coats have pockets with flaps and don’t have as much crisp structure as blazers and suit jackets. . Blazers have long sleeves, lapels, and traditional pockets, and they don’t always have to be worn with matching pants. Suit jackets have higher-quality materials and are worn with matching pants.  (Source: Google).

Do decide whether you prefer pleats or flat-front pants: Opinions vary on this one. Some will say pleats make you look larger than you are or that flat-front pants are unflattering on most body types. There’s no set rule, however, so in this case, wear what makes you feel good. If you like the look of flat-front pants but you feel that they fit too closely to your body for your liking, you can always experiment with different sizes. Just don’t go too baggy because that, too, will look unflattering—and unprofessional.

Match your ties and shirts: No need to go “match-matchy”.  Be sure to choose ties with details that your shirt color brings out. Avoid novelty ties completely and instead go for pinstripes, bolder stripes, textures, and other understated prints.

Wear a belt: If your belt loops can be seen, wear a belt. If your pants sag, wear a belt. If your pants fit and your shirt is worn untucked then no need to wear a belt.  Another simple rule.

Wear a watch: Men’s clothing isn’t always particularly daring or exciting—especially for work. One way to make a statement is to choose a statement watch. Find the one that works with your personality and  your lifestyle. Then wear it every day.  A friend told me he wanted to trade in his Gold Rolex with diamonds because he thought it was an “old man’s watch”.  I did not disagree.  I suggested he go with a bolder, more modern watch.

Wear fitted clothes: Wear tailored pieces as much as possible. Pants that hang off of your hips and bottom area are always unflattering. Baggy t-shirts? Same thing. You may want to play up a specific feature and downplay others, and that’s fine.  Got abs?  Wear a fitted shirt and loose-fitting pants with a belt.

    With Do’s Come Don’ts

Don’t mindlessly follow the trends: Find a signature look that works for you, then follow trends that truly appeal to you carefully. Don’t follow just any trend; if a particular look is best for you, stick to it. You may run the risk of looking like you’re trying too hard to look hip or young after a certain age, or as if you don’t know who you are (at any age).

Don’t stick to the same colors all of your life: Change up your color palette.   Don’t be stuck in a rut.  Of course, I gravitate towards Black and White…But that’s just me.  And don’t be afraid to try new colors .    Try a polo in a color you wouldn’t normally wear.   Pair them with blue jeans or khakis so that it’s still easy to match up while you get used to something new.  I love the colors pink and lavender on a man.   Love, love, love them.

Don’t wear white socks with dress pants: Stick to socks that are a similar color to your pants.

Don’t wear socks with sandals and boat shoes: No explanation necessary. This is always a fashion no-no for men and women alike.  My husband Kevin throws this fashion-don’t to the wind…and just doesn’t care.  I, of course, do…so don’t. :)

    One Final Don’t

Don’t be afraid to ask for help:  Ask your wife, a salesperson at the store, or your kids.  Trust me, if you need help, many people will be happy to do so!

Good Manners are Always in Style!

    17 Dec

OK – I have a bee in my bonnet.  What is wrong with some people?  Why have good manners gone the way of the covered wagon…I think I’m polite…People even comment on it.  Both my children are polite, and I always receive compliments on how polite they are.   But that is the way it’s supposed to be…We are All supposed to be polite.

Remember Barney the Purple Dinosaur?  How could you forget?  Barney sang a song about saying please and thank you, and I truly think some adults need to listen to that song, and act like little sponges.   I don’t think I could stand to listen to it again, as Meredith’s favorite TV show was Barney, but I’m polite, and do not feel I need this refresher. :)

Pardon me is one of my favorite sayings.  Instead of saying “excuse me”.  I say pardon me.  I like the words so much, that I enjoy saying them.  Plus, it’s really good manners when you bump into someone, cough, sneeze, pass by someone, interrupt, burp or perhaps let go of other bodily functions.

I always hold a door open for people coming in after me…Always.  and I sometimes hold it waiting for someone to come in, who is quite a bit away from the door.  More often than not, Women…yes, Women, will saunter in, and not even say thank you.  Hey…I’m a woman too…and I am holding open the door, and you do not bother to say thank you?  Most men insist on taking the door, and always say thank you.  Ladies…put forth the correct example, and when someone holds a door for you, say thank you.

This is a gentle reminder for all of us… but try to return emails and phone calls.  I admit, at times, I am so overwhelmed by phone calls, that I cannot always return a phone call in a prompt manner.  But I really try.  Plus, if I cannot call someone back, I do try to email them to let them know when I can speak to them.  Some of my favorite people in the world don’t always return my call or email as promptly as I would like, and I find it shocking.   I always think, who wouldn’t want to speak to me, or engage in a little email banter? It’s not easy, and everyone is busy, but please try and make an effort.  It’s good manners.  It’s good business.

Other examples of rudeness that rile us me and my sister Megan (who was kind enough to provide these examples)…People who pull all the way to the front of the line in backed up traffic and then cut in front of everyone else who has been waiting… People who don’t give you “the wave” when you’ve let them in front of you in traffic; people who spill their coffee, creamer, sugar, etc on the communal kitchen counter at work places and don’t clean up after themselves;  We could go on and on and on. :)

Remember your manners, and you’ll be remembered, fondly.  Watch your words, as they can come back to haunt you.  Be nice to others, and they will be nice to you.  Gosh…I do believe my mother told me all these oh so long ago!  and as usual, she was right.   Mothers usually are.  Just ask Mer Mer and Paddy. :)

    xoxo
