Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father’s Day complements Mother’s Day, a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood.
I would be remiss if I didn’t make a mention of Father’s Day, and wish all the Father’s a very heartfelt and warm Father’s Day. I’m very fortunate that I can still celebrate Father’s Day with my father (and with Kevin and the kids). And of course, since this is a fashion and shopping blog, I’d best throw out some potential gift ideas.
The following article is from the Muncie Free Press…I’ve given some of my own commentary, of course.
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17th, 2012, and we have some great last minute father’s day gift ideas
As Father’s Day 2012 approaches, many children out there may still need to find the perfect father’s day gift. While there are limitless options for what you can give dear old dad, we have collected some last minute gift ideas so you can get something other than another tie or something like Facebook stock.
While you should be honoring your father (and mother) every day of the year, it is nice sometimes to set aside a little time to devote to a person who has done so much for you over the years. And if your relationship with your father is strained, it can be a good way to rekindle or help heal a broken relationship.
With all that in mind, here are a few groups of father’s day gift ideas for 2012. Remember to put a little creativity (and love) into your gift as this will go a long way in making your dad happy. Even if you do not spend a lot of money, there are quite a few ways to let dear old day know you think he is special.
TOP FIVE TECH GIFTS
If your dad is a tech geek, he is going to love one of these great techie father’s day gifts.
Smartphone – While you may have to put some effort into this, getting your father a new smart phone can be a great way to make him happy. Even if you do not spend a lot of money, you can still get him something a little newer that he will like. Unfortunately, the new iPhone 5 is still not out yet, nor announced, but if your Dad, or spouse, like me, still had the iPhone 3G, then its high time you get him an upgrade!
Apple iPad – Yes, this is a bit pricey, but if you have many siblings in the family, everyone can pitch together to get dear old dad a brand new 64GB Apple iPad 2. Just make sure you don’t skimp on getting him the entry-level model! I love, love, love my iPad. Kevin is already on his 2nd (or 3rd at this point), but it’s one of my all-time favorite gifts. I Highly recommend, getting it 3G-enabled, so you can also use it while on the road, when you don’t have easy access to wi-fi.
GPS - If your father is always getting lost and refuses to stop and get directions and he still doesn’t have a GPS, this can be a wonderful tech gift that they may enjoy – even if they won’t admit it at first! Dad’s are proud, but the right GPS can help them get around wherever they are going. And just because a Dad has a GPS, doesn’t always guarantee he doesn’t get lost.
FloTV PTV350 – This personal television is great for father’s who are always watching the big game, the news or their “programs!” In all seriousness, if you haven’t heard of this small TV, you need to check it out. I have no idea what this is, but I shall also “check it out”!
OnPar Golfing GPS - For dads who are golfers, this Golfing GPS is pretty sweet and the price is pretty reasonable. With a lot of extras built-in especially for golfers, this is a great tech gift for father’s day. This is a Sweet idea! Especially for a not so terrific golfer…can totally make him feel like a pro!!
If you’re short on money, but you still want to give your dad something special for father’s day this year, we have some suggestions for things you can do for free.
Time – Depending on your relationship with your father, you could set aside some time to spend with him … on a weekly basis rather than just once a year! This may not be possible if you don’t live close to your dad, but try to work out something where you can give him blocks of time with you. You will never forget time spent with your Father. And if you cannot be with him, call him. Skype if you can. A text is not sufficient, btw.
Poem – While your dad might not be that much into poetry, he is going to have a hard time not reading something his children write and give to him. Make sure you don’t just take something off the Internet and use it as your own. However, you can use another poem as a basis to write your own, using your own words so that the message is special. If you don’t have the time to spend on pops, spend some time putting together a great, personal poem! If you don’t have the gift of creativity, you can always find a poem, you happen to love, and write it or copy it for your Dad.
Handyman Coupon Book – If your father is getting up there in years (or is just lazy!), what about making a “coupon book” of things you can do to help him around the house – like yard work cleaning the gutters or other simple tasks that he might not want to do or have the time or ability to do anymore. This may seem a little “dorky” to some, but for the right daughter, son, and dad, it can be a great free gift that still means a lot and is cherished. Make sure you spend some time coming up with good coupon ideas and putting them together with good presentation! This is also a great gift for Women!
Homemade Food or Sweets – Breakfast in Bed; make his favorite cookies or brownies; Grill for him!

TRIED AND TRUE GIFTS
Shirt and Tie
Oh lookie there…another Pink tie. I wonder if I’m trying to drive through a point?
Day of Golf – either with or without Dad. His choice.
I’m lucky it’s not Mother’s Day, as Mer and Paddy will not be pleased with this shot and would retaliate on me…but it IS golf-related…and yes, the golf club misspelled O’Brien, and I still think they look great. This was in 2006, btw.

And more ideas!
All this being said, I just read where someone said that “Father’s Day is the Gift”…meaning, the fact that you are fortunate enough to have kids should be gift enough. I suggest not risking it.
