Great Beach Reads…

29 Jun

In my quest to have my Best Summer Ever (BSE) I’ve committed to reading as many books as possible…I’ve sailed through quite a few, but have many more on my nightstand and stored in my iPad and have more than the “back 9″ of the summer and 4 weeks in California to enjoy them.  I’ve compiled a list of some of my past favorite books and authors, and hope you’ll enjoy them.  And understanding that these may not strike everyone’s fancy, I’ve included the LA Times list at the end as well.  Enjoy!

Great Beach Reads (or at the Pool, which is what I prefer…but ideally at a pool that overlooks the ocean, so I don’t have to deal with the sand…Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort…here we come!)

1.   Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy..yes, there are 3 books, and yes, you Must read all 3, like I read all 3.   Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed complete the set.

2.  Hunger Games – yet another trilogy…and I think you should read all 3, but the first was my very favorite.  Catching Fire and Mockingjay are books 2 and 3.

3.  One for the Money…and there are 14 subsequent books by Janet Evanovich.  The movie was lousy, but the books are Fabulous.  There actually are probably 18 in the series now.

4.  Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella – I loved the Shopaholic series, but the Undomestic Goddess, and Can You Keep a Secret are 2 of my all-time favorite books

5.  Bridget Jones’  Diary – Read both.  Book 2 is the Edge of Reason.

6.  If Tomorrow Comes by Sydney Sheldon – an oldie but goody, and I remember reading this book 20 years ago!

7.  Anything by Jen Lancaster – but I do love the name of this one…Bitter is the New Black

8.  Anything by John Grisham – if you haven’t read these books, start with A Time to Kill, then read The Firm (both old, but both great)

9. The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo – I have all 3 of these books which were just delivered this week, so those will be on my summer reading list!

10.  ”Great Chit Lit books” –  try these authors:  Jennifer Weiner; Meg Cabot; Jane Green; Marian Keyes; Helen Fielding; Emily Griffith.

11.  Quick Reads – Anything by Nicholas Sparks; Anything by Mitch Albom (Tuesday’s with Morrie; The Five People you meet in Heaven).

11.  Read every book by Ellen Degeneres…Literally belly-laughing yucks!  Laughing so hard you cry…what is better than that? :)

These are on my Summer Reading List

1.  Steve Jobs - Walter Isaacson

2.  Bossy Pants – Tina Fey

3.  Is Everyone Hanging out without me? –  Mindy Kaling

4.  Defending Jacob –  William Landay

5.  The Art of Fielding - Chad Harbach

6.  I’ve got your number – Sophie Kinsella

7.  Sunday at Tiffany’s – James Patterson

8.  Still Alice – Lisa Genova

I’m looking to round this out to a Top 10…and may take some suggestions from the below list, unless I get some suggestions from some of you…and, again, just in case my list does not float your boat, I’ve included the LA Times list of Beach Reads

And other Great Potential Reads!

And if anyone has any suggestions for me and our little following…please comment on this blog or send me and email, and I’ll pass on your recommendations!

The Best Things about Summer:

1.  Meredith home for the summer – and last night she said the best line ever, “I can’t believe they didn’t give Ann Curry a full week”. :)

2.  McDonald’s vanilla ice cream cones.  99 cents…You cannot beat that price and I do believe it’s only around 150 calories

3.  Wearing flip-flops and actually getting away with “beachy” hair

4.  The occasional week day where we can sleep in if there isn’t summer school or football camp

5.  Laguna and Huntington Beach!  Can. Not. Wait!

6.  Thursday’s Farmer’s Market and Wine Bar with my friends

7.  Ravinia – Earth, Wind, and Fire this year…Fabulous…Maroon Five last year…just as Fabulous!  Ravinia means Summer!

8.  Chilled white wine and fresh seafood and oysters.  Half-priced oysters at Shaw’s everyday from 3P – 6P.

9.  Graduation parties where you can see kids growing up yet your friends and family (nor this blogger) not getting any older!

10.  The Best Summer Ever…or at least I sure am working on it…as well as my tan! :)

Summer Fashion Trends

Summer Fashion Lovin…

Summer is here, weather (pun intended, and I’ve indeed used this before) we are ready or not…Blazing Hot weather in Chicago.  Blue Skies.  Sunny Days.  Best Summer Ever!

So, what are the Summer 2012 Trends?  Inside track. Rules of cool. Prep’s back in nautical. Blue’s the go-to hue.  The hot vibe is bare-legged, bronze-shouldered, sultry & strappy. Playful  pieces are riffed with pretty. Fabrics are sculpted to flatter like mad.  (Source:  Etcetera)

Summer fashion is all about bright colors and bold prints. So, it’s right time to ditch the dark and heavy Winter clothes, look for something other than Black (note to file) and go for something colorful and trendy, and must-have pieces of the season.

The top Summer 2012 fashion trends for women includes bright neons, vivid lip colors, statement-making necklaces, dip dye hair looks, sheer pieces and much more. These fashion trends are chic, bold and extremely wearable. So, check out what’s hot in Summer fashions trends 2012 that you can add to your look.

Color Blocking

The trend that is popping out everywhere this season is color block fashion trends. Fun and playful dresses in striking combinations are “in”. Hollywood divas are rocking a mix of hot pink, emerald-green, tangerine, lemon yellow, turquoise and many more vibrant shades on red carpet and the street. Try out a color blocking effect on clothes, shoes, handbags and other fashion accessories for a fun and edgy look.

Floral and Colored Jeans

This season it’s all about floral prints. The floral print trend has dominated most Spring/Summer 2012 runways and now the floral jeans trend has become one of the season’s biggest trends.

Add twist to your wardrobe, with these floral jeans. These jeans are available in soft pastels as well loud hues with Spring floral images. Wear this style of denim with jackets, cardigans and tops.

Bright and pastel skinny jeans are all the rage for as well. So, bring a burst of sunshine to your wardrobe with some fun, playful and super trendy colored jeans.  Spice up your look by pairing them with tops, blouses, jackets and blazers. Stores have a wide selection of colored denim hues including hot red, neon pink, aqua, green, yellow, soft lavender, milky green etc.

Neon Color

Embrace the Summer spirit in a loud neon colored dress. From dresses to shoes, handbags to hair or nails; everything is going neon. Get ready to bring a pop of electric neon color to your wardrobe.

The key is to stay true to a trend is never wear too many neon pieces at the same time. Don’t forget to feather the neon-trend in colored shoes, bags, jewelry, etc for a fresh and fun look.

Maxi Dress

Be the center of attention with a feminine and elegant maxi dress. A Summery maxi dress is an essential piece of every woman’s wardrobe. These long flowing dresses are flattering, comfy and very smart.

There are an array of styles you can choose from. Wear them with flats and chunky jewelry pieces for a gorgeous look. Get ready for a sizzling hot summer!

Bright Printed Dress

The weather is warm and summer is upon us, so it’s right to add some color and lots of fun to the wardrobe. You’ll be Dressed to a T and sure to impress in vibrant and printed Summery dresses. Cool, comfy and chic styles of these feminine dresses are sure to blow you away. So,,,make a splash in bold and bright dress and enjoy season to the fullest.

Colorful Blazer

The next hottest trend is a colorful blazer  that adds interest to any outfit. Be different and rock a bold colored blazer with your favorite denim for maximum impact.

Nothing makes a colorful blazer more eye-catching than pairing it with simple pieces. If you are bold enough, you can also mix and match it with other colorful pieces. You can wear this eye-popping piece with jeans, short dresses, capris and even shorts.  Rock the blazer with shorts and high heeled sandals, for a look you will love!

Poppy Lip Color

Stand out from the others with a fun pop of bright lip shade with your favorite dresses. Juicy and “yummy” vivid shades look divine and help to get noticed.

The top lip colors for Summer are electric tangerine, hot red, neon pink and bright coral. An eye-popping lipstick is sure to put all eyes on you, so don’t be afraid to play up with your look by painting your lips with loud hues.

Statement Necklace

A Chic and chunky statement necklace is the best way to add some punch to your look. From huge gold necklaces to multi-colored gemstone necklaces, edgy metallic chokers to giant pearl pieces; there are lots of styles available.  You can find these fabulous accessories at Nordstrom, Neiman’s, or Target…Meredith found a great turquoise statement necklace on eBay!

This beautiful jewelry is a perfect complementary accessory that adds instant glamour to your look. The main key is to keep the rest of your outfit simple.

Thoughts on Success

18 Jun

I used to think of June as a Wedding month…now that my children and my friend’s children have kids graduating from high school and college, now I think of June as Graduation party month.  All these beautiful, bright-eyed, intelligent, enthusiastic and eager young adults, all wanting success.  Success…like Beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder.  I’ve always thought that success (in business) is to find something you love and get paid to do it.  I’m fortunate to have that.  And success in life…do you wake up happy and go to bed happy? And yes, most days, I do.  Success. :)

INSPIRATION

Yes, I posted 2 pictures of Jennifer Aniston…but I just found this 2nd picture, and do think she looks amazing.

“Every girl is expected to have caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall butt, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, and the arms of Michelle Obama. The only person close to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes. Everyone else is struggling. – Tina Fey”

Father’s Day Gift Ideas

14 Jun

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June but it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father’s Day complements Mother’s Day, a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood.

I would be remiss if I didn’t make a mention of Father’s Day, and wish all the Father’s a very heartfelt and warm Father’s Day.  I’m very fortunate that I can still celebrate Father’s Day with my father (and with Kevin and the kids). :) And of course, since this is a fashion and shopping blog, I’d best throw out some potential gift ideas.

The following article is from the Muncie Free Press…I’ve given some of my own commentary, of course.

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17th, 2012, and we have some great last minute father’s day gift ideas

As Father’s Day 2012 approaches, many children out there may still need to find the perfect father’s day gift. While there are limitless options for what you can give dear old dad, we have collected some last minute gift ideas so you can get something other than another tie or something like Facebook stock.

While you should be honoring your father (and mother) every day of the year, it is nice sometimes to set aside a little time to devote to a person who has done so much for you over the years. And if your relationship with your father is strained, it can be a good way to rekindle or help heal a broken relationship.

With all that in mind, here are a few groups of father’s day gift ideas for 2012. Remember to put a little creativity (and love) into your gift as this will go a long way in making your dad happy. Even if you do not spend a lot of money, there are quite a few ways to let dear old day know you think he is special.

TOP FIVE TECH GIFTS

If your dad is a tech geek, he is going to love one of these great techie father’s day gifts.

SmartphoneWhile you may have to put some effort into this, getting your father a new smart phone can be a great way to make him happy. Even if you do not spend a lot of money, you can still get him something a little newer that he will like.  Unfortunately, the new iPhone 5 is still not out yet, nor announced, but if your Dad, or spouse, like me, still had the iPhone 3G, then its high time you get him an upgrade!

Apple iPadYes, this is a bit pricey, but if you have many siblings in the family, everyone can pitch together to get dear old dad a brand new 64GB Apple iPad 2. Just make sure you don’t skimp on getting him the entry-level model!  I love, love, love my iPad.  Kevin is already on his 2nd (or 3rd at this point), but it’s one of my all-time favorite gifts.  I Highly recommend, getting it 3G-enabled, so you can also use it while on the road, when you don’t have easy access to wi-fi.

GPS - If your father is always getting lost and refuses to stop and get directions and he still doesn’t have a GPS, this can be a wonderful tech gift that they may enjoy – even if they won’t admit it at first! Dad’s are proud, but the right GPS can help them get around wherever they are going. And just because a Dad has a GPS, doesn’t always guarantee he doesn’t get lost. :)

FloTV PTV350This personal television is great for father’s who are always watching the big game, the news or their “programs!” In all seriousness, if you haven’t heard of this small TV, you need to check it out.  I have no idea what this is, but I shall also “check it out”!

OnPar Golfing GPS - For dads who are golfers, this Golfing GPS is pretty sweet and the price is pretty reasonable. With a lot of extras built-in especially for golfers, this is a great tech gift for father’s day.  This is a Sweet idea!  Especially for a not so terrific golfer…can totally make him feel like a pro!!

TOP FREE GIFTS

If you’re short on money, but you still want to give your dad something special for father’s day this year, we have some suggestions for things you can do for free.

Time – Depending on your relationship with your father, you could set aside some time to spend with him … on a weekly basis rather than just once a year! This may not be possible if you don’t live close to your dad, but try to work out something where you can give him blocks of time with you. You will never forget time spent with your Father.  And if you cannot be with him, call him.  Skype if you can.  A text is not sufficient, btw.

Poem – While your dad might not be that much into poetry, he is going to have a hard time not reading something his children write and give to him. Make sure you don’t just take something off the Internet and use it as your own. However, you can use another poem as a basis to write your own, using your own words so that the message is special. If you don’t have the time to spend on pops, spend some time putting together a great, personal poem!  If you don’t have the gift of creativity, you can always find a poem, you happen to love, and write it or copy it for your Dad.

Handyman Coupon Book – If your father is getting up there in years (or is just lazy!), what about making a “coupon book” of things you can do to help him around the house – like yard work cleaning the gutters or other simple tasks that he might not want to do or have the time or ability to do anymore. This may seem a little “dorky” to some, but for the right daughter, son, and dad, it can be a great free gift that still means a lot and is cherished. Make sure you spend some time coming up with good coupon ideas and putting them together with good presentation!   This is also a great gift for Women! :)

Homemade Food or Sweets – Breakfast in Bed;  make his favorite cookies or brownies; Grill for him!

When it comes to father’s day gifts, the final call is going to be yours, but these suggestions should give you some idea of what to buy him this year.

TRIED AND TRUE GIFTS

Shirt and Tie

Oh lookie there…another Pink tie.  I wonder if I’m trying to drive through a point? :)

Day of Golf – either with or without Dad.  His choice.

I’m lucky it’s not Mother’s Day, as Mer and Paddy will not be pleased with this shot and would retaliate on me…but it IS golf-related…and yes, the golf club misspelled O’Brien, and I still think they look great.  This was in 2006, btw. :)

And more ideas!

All this being said, I just read where someone said that “Father’s Day is the Gift”…meaning, the fact that you are fortunate enough to have kids should be gift enough.  I suggest not risking it. :)

Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers out there!!

Shopping Your Own Closet

8 Jun

My name is Terry, and I’ve, sadly, come to the realization that I have too many clothes.   I’m serious.  I have too many clothes and a very crowded closet to prove it.   And of course, always feel I have Nothing to wear, and usually wear the same clothes (around the house, not for work functions, because I still journal those outfits, so as not to constantly repeat my same favorite outfits) .   My friend Coleen suggested I start to “Shop in my own closet”, and find the hidden treasures I haven’t worn for months, even years.  I have found that advice to be Priceless, and just a month ago wore a favorite pink and black giraffe-print pencil skirt, that I’ve had since 2003.  Discover All The Great Outfits You Already Have…Learn How to Shop In Your Own Closet!  Brilliant!

Shopping your closet seems to be the new way many people choose to shop.  There are books and articles everywhere regarding this subject, so researching the specifics was easy, fun and an eye-opener!  Given the state of the current economy, most people don’t have money to buy many new clothes. But, every woman has a hidden boutique in her own closet.

Women (and men) can easily become confused when they have too many clothes in their closet, so editing is key. Have a BFF (best friend in fashion) whose style you admire go through your closet with you and help you decide what to use and what to lose. Let go of pieces that are outdated, the wrong size, or unflattering for your skin tone and body type. Imagine your closet as the perfectly edited boutique where every item fits and flatters just you. Don’t get hung up on items you know shouldn’t be hanging in your closet anymore. Simply keep them as mementos instead of wearing them. Or, donate them, or sell them on eBay.

Make a “maybe” pile of things you might be able to re-work with minor alterations or update with new items. For instance, a mid-calf length skirt can take on a second life with a little hemming.  Remove shoulder pads from jackets and blouses (and I’m aware some people still have these items), or cropping an outdated jacket or a pair of pencil pants  for a modern take.

Once you have edited down your closet, its time for the fun part – make a list of new items you need to complete your wardrobe. Have an event coming up? Need more clothes that work for day or night? Head to the stores with a list of what you really need and start shopping! You’ll be surprised at how little you actually need to buy to achieve the looks you want.  Smarter choices = smarter style.

(Source:  Lloyd Boston…style guru)

So… how do you shop in your own closet?

Start by taking the picture of the outfit you like (whether it’s from a magazine or just a mental snapshot), and head to your closet to see if you can re-create the look from the pieces you already have. You may not be able to replicate the exact ensemble, but you may find that you can approximate the look by using a blue jacket instead of black one, for example, or a pair of ankle boots instead of a pair of knee-length boots.  You can replicate the look with similar items in your own closet.  The items don’t have to be an exact match.  Have fun finding “The replacements”.

Or you may find that you need to buy one thing to pull it all together instead of six things to start from scratch. Either way, you’ll probably find that you can evoke the new look without buying it all from head-to-toe.  Hence, shopping in your own closet.  This outfit below is a prime example…I have very similar items in my closet, but never thought of pairing a sparkly top with these type of jeans.  Now..it’s my staple! :)

Now this theory assumes  that you actually KNOW and can see the contents of your closet. Many women can’t. In fact, they can barely squeeze one more hanger onto the rack, let alone move them around freely enough to flip through their inventory. So they’ll swear up and down that they don’t have anything like what they’re looking at, buy it, bring it home, and are completely shocked to find that they already have something similar.  Welcome to a day in the life of Terry O’Brien.

If you haven’t cleaned your closet it a while, chances are very good that you have some duplicates taking up space as well. Take some time to cull through your belongings and organize your wardrobe. Knowing what you have to work with is the first step to putting together a wardrobe that works.  And an organized life is a happy life…or so I hear! :)

Next, take some time to flip through fashion magazines, stroll through the mall, or click around online to get some ideas of different ways to wear things. Rip out magazine pages, print off web pages, peruse Pinterest, or make a mental note of the outfits that strike your fancy while you’re window or internet shopping . Then see if you can replicate the look by shopping in your closet FIRST. You may be surprised by what you already have or conversely, by how poorly all that impulse shopping has served you over the years. Always strive to fill your closet with pieces you can mix and match easily for maximum wear.

Mix and match them in new ways, or use the picture pull out/print off/mental snapshot approach to see how you can transform your old favorites into current looks. A snazzy new pair of hose and a great new necklace  may be all you need to take that five-year-old little black dress or red velour skirt from ho-hum to WOW!

Organize Your Closet

Women don’t run out of clothes, they run out of ideas. You might be surprised to find that the more organized your closet is, typically the more organized your life will be. Set your closet up like a mini boutique.

If you can’t SEE those shoes or that top, you’ll forget about it. Remember, out of sight, out of mind.

Top 5 Tips for Cleaning your Closet

1.  Leave yourself ample time to really review each garment carefully and to complete the task.

2.  Have plenty of large trash bags available for throw-away items.  And make sure to remove them from your house when you’re done!

3.  Inventory whatever you decide to donate or consign.

4.  Sentimental items, such as christening gowns, wedding dresses, and such, should be wrapped in acid-free tissue and stored in an acid-free box.  Don’t hang them in your closet!

5.  Discard all dry cleaner’s plastic and plastic bags.  Do not keep them in your closet

Stretch Your Wardrobe

Get more style miles out of your spring wardrobe by only purchasing exactly what you need. Do some homework before you head to the stores. Look up your favorite brands’ websites to get a feel for what’s available, on sale, or for styling ideas.

When you get to the stores, look for versatile items. Don’t worry about buying head-to-toe outfits. Think about purchasing individual items that can be worn different ways. In other words, pieces you can wear from the desk to dinner or from work into the weekend. Layering pieces are great, like lightweight cardigans, that can be stretched from one look to the next. I love a bright trench on ladies this time of year. Belts on just about anything – from jackets and sweaters, to blouses and coats too. Wide or thin.

One great way to stretch what you already have is to take pictures of the looks you get complimented on, creating your own mini look book. It might give you new ideas to wear what you already own. Flip through magazines for inspiration and tear out your favorites. For example, a photo of a celebrity whose style you admire wearing dark jeans, a white button down, and a navy blazer can easily translate into a look you might have in your closet.

I print out pictures of “looks” I like.  I put them on the wall in my closet (or you can print them out and put them in a binder to reference), and find items I already have in my closet, that will help make these “looks”.  And when I’m at a loss as to what to wear, I take a look at the looks I’ve saved, and put together an outfit based on the inspiration of the pictures I’ve printed, and what I have in my closet.

SPRING AND SUMMER ESSENTIALS

Chances are, you already have some of spring and summer essential pieces tucked away in your wardrobe. Now is the perfect time to fish them out.

1.  Big Earrings – Always have these readily available!  I’m totally obsessed with this pair.

2.  Chic Shorts – Long and loose.  Dress up or down, pair with flats, sandals, boots (yes boots) or high heels!

3.  Flesh Tones – In shirts, bags or shoes.  I’m Not a fan of anything flesh toned on your lower half, however flesh-toned Pumps are   truly all the rage!!

4.  Pencil Skirts – another great staple…can be dressed up or down!  Pair with a frilly blouse and blazer; a cardigan; or tank or t-shirt paired with a denim jacket.

5.  Bold Belts – Bold, Wide Belts…Affixed with tassels, brooches, or ribbons, belts are an easy accessory to be inventive with, and they update your look in a cinch.

6.  Cardigans – the cozy sweater style is not a sophisticated staple

7.  Pants – this season…Anything Goes!  I’m loving Capri pants with high heels!

8.  Classic Bags – “signature bags with staying power”.  Your handbag makes a statement…Your statement.

9.  Boyfriend Blazers – they are longer and looser, and pushed up at the sleeves.

10.  The White Shirt – a true staple…

Professional Image Guidelines for Men

4 Jun

Dress for the job you want…not the job you have!  I’ve always heard that advice, and like to think I’ve lived that advice.  When I graduated from college, everyone, men and women, wore suits to work.  Women could wear pants suits, but we still wore suits.  Now, it seems anything goes.  Dressing appropriately for work, almost seems to be a lost art.  What exactly are Professional Image Guidelines for Men at the office?  This will apply more for Men who actually work in an office where there Are Professional guidelines, as opposed to men who can get away with shorts and flip-flops.  And yes, those offices do exist..don’t ask me how I know this. :)

Professional Image Guidelines for Men

Shirts

The shirt sleeve cuff should be loose and extend to the end of your wrist.
If your shirt has a button on the sleeve above the cuff, button it.

No wrinkles in collar, cuffs or facing

Collar loose enough for one finger to fit in neckline

Collar of shirt stands one-fourth to one-half inches above collar of suit

Sleeve extends one-eighth to one-fourth inches below the jacket

No short sleeves with suit jackets

Collars

A classic “Straight” collar is appropriate for all suits. It is traditional and conservative.

The “Tab” or “Pin” collars are other traditional shirts. They are both neat and formal.

The “Button-Down” collar is the most casual of all business shirts and looks fine without a tie.  Also looks “collegiate”.

“Banded” and “Mock” collars are nice alternatives to a traditional collared shirt when a tie isn’t required. Select this style in dressy fabrics, such as silk, for an evening appropriate “smart casual” event.

Ties

The smaller the pattern and the darker the tie, the more authoritative the look.  Pattern small to medium is optimal.

The point of your tie should lay over your belt buckle.

With the width matched to lapel width

I will continue to post pictures of Pink ties to drive through my point that Every man needs to have a pink tie! ;)

Suits

When buttoning the jacket of a three button suit, fasten the top two buttons.

A double-breasted suit should always be buttoned when standing.

The cuff of your shirt should extend about a half-inch beyond a jacket sleeve.

Does not wrinkle across the back

Length must cover buttocks–measure from collar seam to floor and divide it in half for length

Collar lies flat against the shirt

Trousers

Fit is everything. Too big or too tight throws off the balance of your overall image.

Pant hems should clear the shoe heel, but rest on the front of the shoe, creating a slight break.

Pockets remain flat, no bulging

Pants must be well-pressed

Socks

Dark socks such as navy, black or brown are best.
Over-the-calf socks are much better than shorter styles.

Color blends with pants and shoes

Subtle patterns that resemble solid from a distance

Argyle’s are for business causal only

Going without socks is never appropriate in a business setting.  I repeat…Going without socks is Never appropriate in a business setting!

The below photo is a Fashion DON’T, btw

Shoes

Best shoes for business are wing-tips, Oxford’s and dress loafers. Wear wing-tips with traditional suits — Oxford’s and dress loafers with more casual looks.
For many men, shoes are an afterthought, but cheap or uncared for shoes can ruin an otherwise polished appearance.  Flip Flops are not considered appropriate for business…nor are Converse or Mandals.   And nor should one wear slippers in the office. :)

Highly polished (if leather)

Oxfords and suede must be cleaned

The best quality you can afford

Dark color: black, cordovan or brown

Thin or medium soles

Tie or slip-on and tassel loafers for suits and sport coats

Penny loafers or loafers with low vamp for business casual  only

Avoid  boots

Outerwear

An all-weather (i.e.trench) coat and a well-maintained briefcase/tote are essential finishing pieces for most business outfits. Select a good quality trench coat with a zip-out liner so you can wear it year ‘round. You are often wearing a coat when you meet someone for the first time. Make sure this is one of the best items in your wardrobe.  And don’t worry about looking too James Bond…And as far as a briefcase/tote goes, backpacks are great for going to and from the office, but for a business appointment, one should have a nice attaché.

Briefcase

Make it the best quality you can afford

Leather only, hard or soft

No molded plastic or metal

Discreet combination lock

Basics

Short and clean hair; should not touch shirt collar

Hair in nose and ears are trimmed

Avoid excessive gels and lotions

Avoid facial ornaments

Avoid heavy fragrance

Clothes are clean and well-pressed

There are no buttons missing or falling hems

Nothing is torn, stained, or discolored

Jewelery

No bracelets, chains or fancy rings

No earrings

No heavy sport watches or calculators

Simple and elegant are best choices

Gold , silver or leather strap for watch

Cuff links simple, small size; no fancy or clear stones for daytime

Silver-toned cuff links with silver watch; gold toned with gold watch

Other Accessories

Pocket square that complements tie, never identical to it

No tinted glasses

Braces in neutral color, or to complement tie, jacket or shirt

No clip-on suspenders for business

Never wear braces with belt

Simple, classic leather belt design

No large or ornate belt buckles

Belt color matches shoes

Belt  must be in good condition

And this blog is dedicated to my brother Mark, whom I have always felt is the Best-Dressed man I know…and that goes all the way back to my childhood…and this is in no way a ploy to suck up to him, as he has mentioned, at times, he finds my blog “boring”…when it has to do with girl stuff, rather than Man stuff. :)

Tips for an Organized Closet

1 Jun

Do you constantly go into your closet and think “I have nothing to wear”?  Even though you have tons and tons of clothes!  It may be high time to organize your closet.  As I mentioned, I probably have more clothes than most.  I’ve been repping the same clothing line, (in my spare time as a hobby and way of feeding my hunger for cute clothes) since Fall 2003.  That’s 4 seasons of clothes a year, or 48 trunk shows, which means 48 shopping opportunities for me, which means way more clothes than I, or a small village needs.  And even I look into my closet and think, “I have absolutely Nothing to wear”!!

Even though I’m constantly purging and donating, it appears the clothes keep multiplying and when I look through my closet (which is size of a small room, and thank You Kim for that), it’s overwhelming, and I tend to gravitate towards the same outfits.  So it’s time to not only purge and donate, but also Declutter!

Signs it’s time to declutter the closet:

1.  Is your closet chock full of clothes you no longer wear or no longer fit?

2.  Are you having trouble finding the LBD (little black dress) you picked up from the dry cleaner?

3.  Are your work clothes wrinkled from being shoved in the back of the closet?

4.  Can you no longer walk into your walk-in closet?

5.  Is the bottom of your closet strewn with clothes as you throw them on the ground in search of the perfect outfit?

6.  Is looking in your closet overwhelming?

If you answered Yes to any of these questions, or if your closet is just a mess…it’s time to do some Spring/Summer Cleaning in your closet!

Before you tackle the task of going down in your closet…First and foremost, you need to Edit your Wardrobe.  Distinguish clothing and shoes that you wear and items that you need to get rid of. You can do this by the golden rule of closet organizing: If you haven’t worn it in a year, toss it.  Also, if it doesn’t fit you well, it is time to get rid of it. Instead of hanging on to your “skinny jeans” until you lose a few pounds, donate them. Then, when you get down to your goal weight, treat yourself to a new, stylish pair of jeans.  and if an item is severely damaged, even if it’s your very favorite pair of jeans, toss it out.

Quick Tips for an Organized Closet

Here are some quick tips to jump-start your closet organization!

  • Hang clothes in complete outfits. Put jewelry in plastic bags and hang them from the hanger.  Sort them by Day of the Week, if you can plan a week, or more out.
  • Organize your wardrobe around one key color – it’s easier to shop for and match complete outfits.  May I suggest Black?! :)
  • Hang your boots
  • Put an over-the-door or adhesive hanger on your closet door so that you have a place to plan your daily outfits.
  • Keep a large bag in your closet – anything you come across that can be given away, either because it is outdated or no longer fits, can be donated to a local women’s shelter when the bag is full.
  • Do a Seasonal change of clothes if you don’t have room to store All your clothes.  Covered clothing racks can be filled with out-of-season clothes and kept in your attic or basement or under your bed. Flat storage boxes can serve a similar purpose.
  • Deal with dry cleaning. Remove clothes from dry-cleaning bags as soon as you get home, and hang your clothes on proper hangers. Return the wire hangers to the dry cleaner for reuse.  (Future blog:  Dry Cleaning tips…when and when not to dry clean).
  • Contain what doesn’t hang. Use containers—consider a matching set of baskets—to hold accessories and clothing that can’t be hung, such as socks and undergarments. Smaller baskets or boxes can store a single type of accessory, such as scarves or hats.
  • Attach a snapshot of your shoes to the front of the boxes to easily identify them.
*Or try this as a way to hang your High Heels…off of Crown Molding attached to the wall:
          *  Store Shoes in empty wine box – cover in contact paper, or scrapbooking paper
  • Invest in matching hangers. You can get wooden ones super cheap this time of year! Try places like Wal-Mart, Target, and IKEA.
  • Fold t-shirts in half and store them vertically where you can see all of them at once. You can fit more in the drawer and actually see what’s there!  Or they can be stored in a basket on the closet floor.
         * Looking for ways to organize the men’s ties?:
Set small, attainable goals that can be completed in a relatively short period of time. Don’t try to finish a large project in one swoop. Divide up organizing projects into small pieces that can be completed, from start to finish, in one dash. That way, you’re less likely to be interrupted, tire of the project, or to become distracted. Sprinting is stimulating, and keeps your interest high. No matter how large the organizing project, it can be broken down into short sprints.  This is a good rule to follow in your life in areas other than closet organizing!

This last picture is of a 2-story closet…Be.  Still.  My.  Heart! :)
I found a great worksheet on the web from the creativity exchange, and they have a great Closet Organization worksheet, which if you email me or comment on this post, I will send you a copy.  It’s also a great blog, so check it out!
The more often you declutter, the less time it will take and the easier it will become over time. Committing to a weekly clutter sweep means spending 10-15 minutes once or twice a week in your closet placing items in your donation box, re-arranging clothing that has fallen out-of-place and re-handing and folding clothes that may be strewn about your bedroom and bathroom. All of this will take much less time than you think if you tackle it regularly.
