Pay it Forward…

31 Jan

This is a wonderful idea…I saw this on the Pinterest, and will do it this weekend.   While dining out, spy a young family, one that exhibits “good parenting”  in your eyes, and pick up their tab.  When growing up with 5 kids in our family, we were fortunate enough to eat out probably much more than the norm.  I remember almost every time we ate out, someone would comment to our parents how well-behaved we were.  Of course, I’m not sure the 5 of us thought there was Any other option than perfect behavior.  :)

If able, I invite you to do so as well…make an impression on someone’s life…a lasting one.  Be it a toll, a fast food meal, or rewarding young parents with picking up their restaurant tab.  The gift of giving always exceeds the gift of receiving.

Pay it forward…

And I am Paying forward this Sensational Video of the spoof on Ferris Buehler’s Day off for a Super Bowl Commercial!  Love, Love, Love it!!

Enjoy!

Spring Fashion Trends!

27 Jan

Based on last week’s nasty weather (not to mention my 4.5 hour commute from downtown Chicago, but thankfully the caring friend I had lunch with kept checking on my well-being throughout my long commute home :) ), I think we need to focus on Spring…and that, of course means Spring Fashions!

The trends are in. And….we’re off! Loving Gatsby. Wild over safari. Flirting with pretty. Crazy for curvy. Can’t get enough sunshine colors; shots of razzle-dazzle; and nautical that’s more Euro than prep.

1.  Great Gatsby

Cool girls are channeling Ms. Daisy. Taking the twenties for a 21st-century spin. In romantic pales. All flowery, fluttery, dotty, drapey; ruffled, flounced and feather-hemmed.  Best watch that flick on Netflix!

2.  Out of Africa

Get your safari on. It’s major. More city than savannah. More wicked than wild. Cool, crisp, easy. Done with all the iconic details you love. In super-luxe fabrics and savvy animal prints. Animal prints are not going away, Thankfully!

3. Mellow Yellow

The perfect lemon. A splash of sunshine. Coquettish. Stylish. Wildly becoming. The dishiest shade of spring. Fresh and pretty with black and white. Worn over, under and on its own.  Yellow…the new Neutral.  If you don’t want to wear yellow pants or a jacket, a yellow purse will take you into Fall, or a great pair of yellow gem earrings (canary diamonds not necessary).

4.  Scuba Gear

A trend that runs deep. Inspired by the curves of the wet suit. Sporty. Sexy. Second-skin. Loosely interpreted in silos that sculpt the body. And a color of ocean we call scuba blue. (not a fan of these pics with no heads, but it is what it is).

5.  Sail Away

The new nautical. Less prep. More Portofino. Euro-chic in scroll prints, tux-styled whites, tweed suiting, stripes of a different color and the coolest cropped jean on the Riviera! This white flowy blouse and leggings or cropped jeans will be my uniform for Spring!

6.  Pop Culture

Firecracker brights. The new IT-shades. Flashing. Sizzling. Supersaturated. Popping your wardrobe with pure, clean, joyful colors that kick it up to a whole new level of WOW!  Red, Orange, Yellow, pick a color, any color.

7.  Natural Woman

Say bye-bye to the boy’s club. Hello to pull-out-all-stops pretty. Find full skirts, eyelet suits, peplum waists, a flirty 50s twinset, a little glimmer and a lot of pink.  Again, a handbag, scarf, bracelet…you don’t have to wear pink in the clothing, but pop it in an accessory.

8.  Razzle Dazzle

Don’t spare the glitter. It’s on call 24/7. Stock-up on sequins, beads, patina and shine; little pours of molten jersey; a leather topper that glimmers; a boyfriend jacket that glows. Pair that sequin skirt with a denim jacket, white blouse, and fun jewelry.

COLORS!!

The Colors of Spring from the Pantone Fashion Color Report

There are nine dominate colors for spring. They are a mixture of brights, pastels and muted tones that feel like the season they represent.

Brights: Solar Power (sunny yellow), Bellflower (bright violet/dark lavender), Cabaret (bright fuchsia/hot pink), Tangerine Tango (bright reddish-orange) and Sodalite Blue (dark cobalt/bright navy)
Pastels: Sweet Lilac (baby pink, pale lavender), Margarita (mint/light grass) and Cockatoo (aqua, light turquoise)
Muted Tones: Driftwood (muted Pewter/light charcoal) and Starfish (muted bronze taupe)

How to Wear Spring’s Brights

The brights of spring 2012 are bold and will add a pop of color to your wardrobe. You can pair these brights with neutral black or white for an easy look, which is my staple.   However, go for the gusto and mix these brights together. The prints for spring feature these colors from pretty feminine florals to graphic athletic and tribal-influenced styles

Mix Pastels with Brights to Intensify Their Color

Pastels are a spring staple. Seeing a mint green or baby pink frock is nothing new during this season. You can make your pastels pop with the color intensity their bright counterparts do when you pair a pastel and bright together.

Spring’s Muted Colors Bring a Fashionable Change

Typically ‘muted tones are relegated to office wear’. Muted taupe trousers or light grey skirt suits are the norm for these tones.

Whether you choose to pair spring’s hot colors together, purchase a colorblock garment or wear a vibrant print does not matter. These colors work well with each other and compliment many skin tones. If you are not one for wearing brights or pastels why not be daring and try out one of these hot colors for spring. It can be as simple as a scarf or colorful skirt. As always, whatever you choose inject your own unique style to make sure the look is totally you.

And a quick shout out to my friend Kim, whom I saw this week at a meeting and told me how much she loves my blog.  Truly makes me blush, and I love those comments, btw…and also love all comments, for example my friend Lynda who told me if I have too much energy, but if I possibly layed off caffeine, I could be like the rest of you. Here’s hoping, as I publish this enjoying my 2nd cup of coffee. :)

May the force be with you. :)

T.

21 Days to get Organized

23 Jan

2012 is the year of the Dragon, so I shall stop Draggin’ and Get Organized (or attempt to) ! :)  I am going to do the 21-Day Organizing Challenge…and since I was traveling earlier this month (sunny San Diego, which I happen to love, btw), I have chosen to start late January, as opposed to Jan 1, when many people would have started this project.  You can pick 21 items or areas you feel need addressing, and spend time each day focusing on these areas.  I’m aware it’s not always possible to spend an hour or more each day on a project, but perhaps you can tailor your list to work within your time constraints.

21 DAY ORGANIZING CHALLENGE * Join the Challenge (at any time) * Day 1 – Junk Drawer (just pick 1) * Day 2 –  Desk * Day 3 – Tupperware Cabinet * Day 4 – Linen Closet * Day 5 – Under kitchen sink * Day 6 – Dresser Drawers * Day 7 – The Pantry * Day 8 – Coat Closet * Day 9 – 3rd Floor * Day 10 – Laundry Room * Day 11 – The Freezer * Day 12 – Spice Cabinet * Day 13 – Medicine Cabinet * Day 14 – Gift Wrap Station * Day 15 – To Donate Area * Day 16 – The Fridge * Day 17 – Game Closet * Day 18 – Files * Day 19 – Master Closet * Day 20 – Photos * Day 21 – You pick

Remember, You can Do it Yourself (DIY) and pick your own 21 areas, closets, drawers, rooms, or 21 items you want to see better organized:  Desk; Dresser Drawers; Jewelry; Holiday storage; Underwear draw; Athletic items…You pick…and if you have a list of 100 items, start with the 21-day Organization this month, then do a few more several days each month.  Before you know it, You will be Organized…or well on your way to being organized!

And here are some photos for inspiration!

I hang my boots this way in my closet, and I think it’s an ingenius idea…which I happened to pirate from Pinterest!

I have a copy of the 365-day Declutter Calendar…I cannot post it here, as it’s decluttering ideas for everyday of the year…but, if you comment on this blog, I will email you a copy!  How’s that for a New Year treat?

May you have an organized year!

T.

PS – Re: Vernon Davis..I still love the video of him crying tears of joy while running off the field into Coach Harbaugh’s arms…but I think Prancing up on top of a camera stand, and getting a 15-yard unsportsmanlike contact penalty, was foolish on his part.  Not sure why these athletes will Never learn that Boastful Behavior in the end zone will be penalized?…Plus, I had forgotten about his boorish behavior in past years, but hopefully he’s realized football is a Team sport, and it’s not all about Vernon Davis.

RIP Joe Pa!

I Can be a Savvy Packer (at times)…and my favorite video of the year, thus far!

20 Jan

Ok…I understand that when I blogged about being a savvy packer back in May, that perhaps, “historically” I may not have shown savvy packing skills as my luggage for a 4-day trip, typically tipped the scales within one pound of the limit of 50 LBs…and I also checked an additional smaller bag, that carried my shoes, boots, purses, toiletries and workout clothes.  Clearly Not Savvy.  I get that.

However…I’m pleased to proclaim, on a recent trip to Las Vegas for 4 days I Carried on!  27 LBs…and that included toiletries, boots, clothes, workout clothes, extra purse, etc…and my smaller carry-on was a purse!  Not a large laptop bag, but a 15×12 black patent leather purse!  Even the Limo driver commented that most women don’t carry on for 4 days n Vegas.  Indeed, I was savvy packer!

Yet, sadly, I must confess that after spending 4 days in San Diego, with 9 (yes 9) pairs of shoes and boots (actually 12, but I was trying to salvage some pride), I desperately need a refresher on how to be a savvy packer, as I once again checked 2 bags…one at least 45 pounds, and my “accessories” tipping the scales at 29 pounds.  And, I did not pack one pair of comfortable shoes…a painful lesson!

Perhaps I should take the lead from my friend “C”, who went to Japan, and packed one 20″ carry-on with satchel that had her purse in it. Boots, flat shoes and tennis shoes , 3 pants , 1 skirt, 5 sweaters , 2 tops, 2 scarves  , minimal jewelry    Though I did receive this text after she boasted about her savvy packing skills…  ”oh crap I just remember I forgot my curling iron. ”  Forgotten curling iron aside, she is the Gestapo of packing!

REFRESHER PACKING TIPS (For Terry and anyone else who needs them)

*Choose dark (black, dark blue, purple, green, dark red) or neutral (all browns and shades of gray) colored clothing, so any dirt or stains acquired along the way won’t be too apparent. Try to stick to two or three colors, so that all your clothes mix and match.  May I suggest Black, White, and either Pink or Red?  Coordinate shoes and handbags with these colors.  Do Not be like I was and take both brown , black and metallic shoes, boots and handbags.  Unnecessary!
*For cooler weather travelers: layering clothes is more effective than hauling around bulky sweaters or coats.
*A great way to pack clothes and keep them relatively wrinkle free and neatly contained is to use packing cubes. Roll garments up into tight tubes to save packing space and avoid major wrinkling. Packing cubes can be used to keep your rolled up clothing contained and organized. They allow you to find what you are looking for without taking everything out of your bag and stop all your tightly packed rolls of clothing from coming unrolled and ending up in a pile on the floor.  And, truly, packing clothes really packs more items of clothing into your luggage.
*When writing out your own packing list remember the traveling light motto: Gather together everything you think you’ll need and get rid of half of it. Do not bring things just because they might come in handy.
*Pack one book. You can buy more when you reach your destination or at the airport. If you’re absolutely certain you’ll need more than one book, consider books-on-tape or download e-books to your iPod or MP3 player.  I bring one magazine, one paperback (never hardcover, as I don’t like carrying things that are heavy) and make sure I have 3 books and 4 movies/TV shoes on my iPad.
*Don’t pack things you can buy in your destination. This includes extra feminine products, diapers, pain relievers, razors, etc.  Actually, these tips are from cheaptravel.com, and I say pack travel sized containers of these items, and keep them in your travel toiletry bag.
*Buy travel-size items. You’ll either discard them before leaving your destination or you’ll find a spare inch or two in your suitcase when coming home.  Buy these at home, and keep them stored in your Dop kit.

(Source: Container Store Travel Packing Tips)

This is the most difficult of all the packing chores – what to wear.  No one wants to run out of clean underwear or get a red wine stain on your only pair of khaki pants (which is why I don’t wear khaki pants, nor do I drink red wine), but there is a happy medium when it comes to packing clothes:

**One rule of thumb to remember: Unless its stained or soiled, it can be worn again. Double-up your outfits based on the amount of days you’re staying. For example, if you’re going away for 10 days, you need five outfits. (This is not necessarily a Terry-approved tip).
**Do the wash. Grab a bottle of Woolite® or hand-wash laundry detergent and do your wash in the sink one night. You’ll wake up the next morning with clean clothes that you won’t mind wearing again.
**If you’re not a celebrity at home, you won’t become one on vacation. Keep the outfit changes to a minimum. A simple cardigan or evening jacket can turn a daytime outfit into a nighttime affair.  What if one is a celebrity at home and on the road?  Just asking. ;)
**Pack shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits. The general rule is: one pair of shoes per anticipated occasion. For example, you’ll need one pair of walking shoes, one pair of beach shoes, one pair of evening shoes and one pair of casual shoes.

Though I beg to differ with Cheap Travel’s one tip…while I’m not a celebrity, I’m always hoping to become one when I travel…Why squelch a girl’s dreams?

And speaking of Dreams…This moment, when San Francisco 49-er Vernon Davis caught a pass from Alex Smith  to seal the fate against the New Orleans Saints (whom I love, btw), showed pure joy.  Pure emotion, and I, once again, became a fan of the San Francisco 49-ers…of course, it helps having Kevin work there, but nonetheless, truly one of my favorite moments of the year!  And you may FF to 1.34 if you don’t want to watch the entire video.  Jim Harbaugh embracing Davis…You have a heart of stone if you don’t shed a tear!

A perfect Super Bowl in Indy…49-ers v Patriots!  Bring It On!!

Step away from that lipstick

13 Jan

A very dear friend of mine showed me a lipstick she had received from a friend as a gift.  YSL…Rouge Pur.  Bubble gum pink is the best way to describe this color. It was a cream lipstick, not a gloss.   The photo below is actually being too kind to this color.  The color was actually the color of the cover of my iPad.  Not the color one should be aiming for. Mrs. X said she and her friend used to use this lipstick when they were 20…Mrs. X and her friend are now looking at 45 in the rear-view mirror.  Because of its “harsh” color, Mrs. X would dab is ever so lightly on her lips, and cover it with a heavy clear gloss.  Hmmm…Didn’t really help.   She asked my opinion of it, and I said, “Step away from that lipstick”.  She handed it to me, and has never looked back, until she reads today’s blog post. :)

Just because some one gives you a lipstick as a gift, does Not mean you need to wear it. :)

Ladies, there are very few colors in lipstick that have transcended generations…and  YSL Rouge Pur is not one of them!

“If I had to teach someone just one thing about lip color it would be this: Find a lipstick that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no makeup.” — Bobbi Brown, “Beauty”

While picking the right shade can be as easy as going a couple of shades darker than your natural lip color, you can delve just a wee bit deeper in the science of shades and skin tone.

Women with fair skin, look great in lipstick shades such as nudes in a slightly apricot shade, pinks and light corals. Stay away from browns, which will appear blah.

Those with a medium skin tone can go a bit darker. You’ll look great in roses, mauves and berries. Skip the bright reds and consider a deep burgundy instead.

Deep plum, chocolate or red is fabulous with dark or black skin. Women with dark skin “can go in one of two directions: toward brown or purple. Think caramel or walnut for day, and plum or wine for evening.”

Sell those Unwanted Gift Cards

6 Jan

Do you have gift cards that you know you won’t use? Did you receive a Menard gift card for Christmas, when you were yearning for a Nordstrom gift card instead?  Do you have 4 Starbuck’s gift cards when you gave up coffee for lent 9 years ago and no one seems to remember?  Well no worries…you don’t have to find your next pair of Christian Louboutin boots at the hardware store, or go back to your 5-a-day Grande Non-fat Latte habit… There are ways in which you can sell your unwanted gift cards for cash, or exchange them for a gift card that is more up your alley, so you can enjoy half-priced oysters at Shaw’s, instead of 27 Big Macs from McDonald’s.

These sites help you sell your unwanted gift cards, trade them or even buy gift cards at a discount.

Sites deal in gift cards from hundreds of national retailers, so you likely won’t be able to sell a gift card from a local shop. Cards usually must have a value of $20 or $25 still on them.  Sellers send their cards to the exchange, which verifies the value.   Buyers can pick up cards at a discount of up to 35 percent, although the saving is much less on popular cards.  Some sites offer a money-back guarantee if a card’s value turns out to be less than promised. That’s a big advantage over trying to sell a card on your own through Craigslist.

http://www.Plastic Jungle.com - As one of the largest gift card exchange websites, Plastic Jungle is a prime source for cards of all kinds, including electronics. Best Buy gift cards, Home Depot gift cards and Kohl’s gift cards are some of the heavy-hitters available on a regular basis, but you’ll find everything from iTunes to restaurant gift cards. Plastic Jungle only buys cards with a minimum of $25, but will pay up to 92 percent of the card’s value. To sweeten the deal, free shipping and a money-back guarantee are included with every purchase.

http://www.Swapagift.comis the world’s first and largest discounted gift card exchange. Swapagift.com has over 1,000 partner locations across the country where you can walk in with your unwanted gift card

http://www.giftcardrescue.com - In the ever-expanding gift card swap world, the 3-year-old outfit Gift Card Rescue is doing things a bit differently to separate itself from the pack. With the same buy/sell services as many other sites, plus a repertoire of over 250 popular merchants and 90-percent cash back, it more than keep up with the big dogs. Where Gift Card Rescue really shines is in the customer service department. The business offers both phone and e-mail assistance throughout the whole process, as well as a generous guarantee and free shipping.

http://www.cardpool.com – On this one you can set up a Wishlist of your favorite merchants and you’ll get a notification when it has gift cards that you can get in exchange for your unwanted ones. Card Pool is a clean and functional site with plenty of tips on how to become a deal-savvy gift card trader, buyer or seller. What’s more, every order comes with free shipping and a 100-day guarantee

http://www.giftcardgranny.comThe money-wise Granny knows the best deals are found when given options, accessibility and convenience. She works closely with seven reputable online gift card exchange leaders to provide over 15,000 discount gift cards from hundreds of the most coveted merchants, both online and off.

http://www.cardcash.comthe leading online discounted gift card exchange, enables customers to buy gift cards and save close to 35% on their gift card purchases.  Customers who buy gift cards at a discount can combine the savings with any other coupons they may have. They sell gift cards from most major national retailers. CardCash has two gift card markets, one market is where we buyback unwanted gift cards and give cash for unused gift cards.

http://www.cardwoo.coma company that gives the holders of unwanted gift cards the chance to sell those gift cards for cash.  They also offer gift cards to some of the most popular stores and restaurants at great discounts.

http://www.Ebay.comthe old stand-by…for buying and selling, just about anything!

How much you get for your cards depends on the merchant. Some merchants are more popular than others, so of course you’ll get less for the less desirable merchants.  Each website has its own rules and regulations, so it’s best to peruse all of them, and find which ones best suit your needs and work with the gift cards you have.

For example…for a $20 Starbucks gift card,  Cardcash will pay 80 percent of the value, so you’ll get $16 for your $20 gift card.

For Cabela’s you will get less at 67 percent of the value. So your $20 gift card will only be worth about $13 bucks.

If you’re more interested in buying gift cards, it’s a better deal for you. You simply search for the cards you want and get 10 to 30 percent off. You also have the option to trade gift cards, but keep in mind the transaction fee ranges from 3 to 10 percent.

And lest you think it twas I speaking of the Menard gift card, when I really wanted Nordstrom (though truth be told, I’m really not a big fan of hardware stores, but they do have their place in society), I did use AMEX points to buy a $500 Home Depot gift card.  So I got that going for me (and the back powder room). ;)

Happy New Year, and may you end up with a gift card that truly strikes your fancy!

Packing Tips for Studying Abroad

5 Jan

My friend Mary Beth’s son Jeff is studying abroad for the spring semester in Rome…lucky, lucky young man…so Mary Beth and Jeff…this blog’s for you!

“I know students (and the general traveling population) want a detailed packing list, and we all get annoyed when someone says “it’s common sense”. So I’ve put together everything I thought you could possibly want or need when you study/travel abroad. (I’ve tried to adapt it for everyone, both guys and girls.) I wouldn’t expect you to pack everything below, so use your own discretion.  At least with this list in front of you, there’s a good chance you won’t forget something you really wanted to bring. So, here is my version of the ultimate study abroad packing list!”  (This is from a Student who actually traveled abroad, unlike me who traveled to Carbondale…but it was the 3rd best Communication School in the country, btw). :)

Quick rhetorical question before we get into the good stuff:  do you have a suitcase to pack all this stuff in?

Clothing:

  • Underwear (two week’s worth)
  • Socks (two week’s worth plus a pair or two of wool socks)
  • Undershirts
  • Thermal underwear
  • Long sleeve shirts
  • Short sleeve shirts
  • Sweatshirt/ hoodie (2-3)
  • Sweaters
  • Jeans/ Khakis (2-3 pair)
  • Shorts
  • A belt or two
  • Skirts (for the girls)
  • A set or two of workout clothes
  • Pajamas
  • Swimsuit (for those going to warmer climates)
  • Coat/Jacket ( I recommend at least 2 – one for cold weather, and one that is water-resistant)
  • At least one nice outfit for formal occasions
  • Flip flops/ sandals of some sort (good if you’re going to a warm climate, but also good for hostel showers)
  • Sneakers/ dress shoes/ boots/ rain boots
  • Cold weather gear (i.e. gloves/ mittens, hat, scarf)

Toiletries:

  •  1-quart zip-top Ziploc bags with TSA-approved toiletry kit
  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine Products (one month’s worth – should go without saying you don’t want to be stuck without those)
  • Brush/Comb
  • Razors/ other shaving supplies
  • Contact lenses and solution
  • Nail clippers
  • Makeup
  • Over-the-counter medicines
  • Tissues/ toilet paper (you don’t want to be stuck in a bathroom when its run out)

Extras:

  • $300 in local currency
  • Purse/ wallet
  • Important documents (passport, visa, itinerary, plane tickets, ISIC card, etc.), and copies of each
  • Sunglasses/ extra eye glasses/contacts
  • Cell phone (you probably won’t be able to use it in your host country, but it’s invaluable if you’re stuck in domestic airports and need to contact someone for delayed flights, etc.)
  • Laptop and charger (don’t forget, you’ll need an outlet adapter 2 Suitcases + 1 Year = Study Abroad Packing List for the plug on your charger to work)
  • Camera w/cords and charger
  • Sheets/ bed linens
  • Bath towels
  • Enough prescription drugs for the length of your stay (You need to make sure you are allowed to bring them into the country and that you have documentation, either the prescription or a doctor’s note)
  • MP3 Player/ iPod (for long plane/train rides)
  • Sleep sack/sleeping bag (most hostels have sheets, however, some do not, some will charge you for them, and for those people who don’t like sleeping in unfamiliar sheets, I recommend a Cocoon Travel Sheet.)
  • Journal/ diary (you’ll be taking plenty of pictures on your travels, but it’s always nice to have something to write in. Of course I recommend writing a blog, but you may not always have your laptop with you.)
  • Backpack (for daily use and as your carry while traveling)
  • Plastic bottles for toiletries for use in your carry-on or while traveling (the maximum is usually 100ml)
  • Water bottle/ Nalgene bottle  (since the Nalgene bottle is plastic, it’s a lot easier to get through airport security)
  • A few hangers

Packing Tip #1: Rolling your clothes tends to be a more space efficient method than simply laying them  flat in your suitcase.

Packing Tip #2: Pack socks (and maybe underwear) last. They’re great for filling in the random spaces, and they fit in just about every compartment of a suitcase.

Packing Tip #3: I’m not trying to rag on airlines (well, maybe), but no matter how advanced luggage tracking is, they will still lose bags. Save some space in your carry-on for a change of underwear, socks, etc. and some basic toiletries.  These toiletry bags are easy to pack and TSA approved – now you won’t have to worry about getting it confiscated by airport security.

The “How-To’s” and “Do’s and Don’ts” of Packing:  How to Fit Your Life into 2 Suitcases:

Toiletries

The only reason I would suggest actually packing toiletries is because they can be pretty expensive in foreign countries.  However, they take up a good amount of space in your luggage and provide a ton of unneeded weight. It’s really a game time decision, and if it were me, I would sack up and just buy them abroad.  If you want, bring a couple travel sizes of your favorite toiletries, that way you don’t have to run to the store the first time you need a shower. Girls, if you think you’re going to be abroad in a more remote area, seriously consider packing a good supply of your usual feminine type products.

Sheets/ linens/ towels:

See if your host institution provides these for you. Talk about taking up unnecessary space in your suitcase – even if your host institution doesn’t provide them for you, you’re probably still better off buying them when you land.  If you do feel the desperate need to pack sheets or towels, try to bring sets that you won’t mind throwing away (or donating) at the end of your stay – it’ll free up massive amounts of space for your journey home.  Uncomfortable sleeping in sheets that didn’t come from your own home? A lot of people I went abroad with used one of these Cocoons How To Fit Your Life Into Two Suitcases.

Socks/ underwear:

This one time, I advise you to load that suitcase up with as many pairs as you can. The more you bring, the less often you’ll have to do your laundry (which can get costly). If they don’t fit in your suitcase when you’re packing to come home, no worries, they’re cheap enough to throw away and replace.

Space Bags:

My one piece of advice – be careful. Yeah you can fit more in your suitcase, but guess what – more stuff equals more weight. If you pack you entire luggage to the brim in space bags, there’s a chance you’ll pack so much that you’ll be over the weight limit. As a matter of fact, get one of these portable luggage scales How To Fit Your Life Into Two Suitcases. Making an attempt to stay under the weight limit will save you a lot of time and stress especially when you’re packing for those weekend trips.

Don’t Forget To Make Use Of Your Carry-on Bag:

Although your carry-on will be full of a lot of stuff to keep you entertained – i.e. laptop, iPod,chargers, cards – it will probably still have a decent amount of empty space. Fill it with odds and ends, DVDs, chargers and cords, and anything else that’s light and/ or flat.

More Packing Tips for Study Abroad

1. Identify your Belongings:  Display your name and permanent address, as well as your overseas contact address on labels outside and inside your luggage, this way, if your outside label is lost, your belongings may still be identified.

2. Check with airlines to learn about their policy regarding luggage:  Most airlines allow international travelers to check two pieces of luggage, up to 70 pounds, and to bring one small carry-on. Make yourself aware of your airline’s policies.

3. Limit yourself to the essentials:  You will no doubt acquire things overseas. When packing for your trip, try to limit yourself to the 2-bag rule so that you aren’t bogged down on your return trip.

4. Pack all your valuables in your carry-on bag.  I repeat…Pack all your valuables in your carry-on bag: This includes traveler’s checks, cash, identification cards, visa, and passport.

5. Keep your passport with you at all times. In addition, bring two photocopies with you and store them in different locations.

6. Establish contact ties with the IEEP office! Leave a photocopy of your passport, visa page, travel itinerary, and overseas contact information with your study abroad advisor.

Holiday Photo Cards…whatever to do with them after the Holidays?

3 Jan

Holiday Photo Cards!  We all receive them.  I send them and never throw away the ones I receive…but what does one do with them, after the season, other than keep them with the christmas decorations?  You can one or two-hold punch them, keep them together with binder clips (you can find at any office or craft store), or ribbons and put them on a coffee table each year during the Holiday Season as “coffee table photo books”.   I did this for the cards from the past few years and everyone who was over during the holidays looked through them. I may even sneak in a few photos of past blogs! :)

And, may I say, the  lovely photo, featured above would certainly open up some lively conversations! :)

And here are some Hilarious Holiday Photo Cards:

Happy New Year!
