And a Girl became a Princess!

29 Apr

I must admit.  I got up a dark-thirty o’clock to watch the royal wedding.  Can’t help myself.  I’m a hopeless romantic and believe in Fairy Tales.  I am truly Loving the fact that a Girl will become a Princess.  And, No, I was Not invited, but I find it charming how many people have asked me if I’ve been.  Nope, I was not (and realize they are, indeed, being sarcastic)…But, just in case they are serious, not being invited is for the best, since

I typically post my blog around 630A on Fridays, so in reality, this should be really up to date and quite current…and hopefully with fabulous photos (as I’m hoping to grab from google)!  I’m all about weddings, but I have to admit, there’s been quite a bit of media coverage on this…Perhaps, just a wee bit too much leading up to the Big Day (sorry Laurie F) ?    I totally understand  the coverage starting today at 4AM, but all the news media in England a full week early?  Really?  I don’t believe the paparazzi were in Mt. Prospect a full week before I married Kevin!  ;)

Royal Wedding Tid Bits

The Dress- Let’s face it, it’s all about Kate’s dress!   Who designed it (Sarah Burton) , what does it look like (The design: “Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.” The fabrics: “French Chantilly lace was combined with English Cluny lace to be hand-worked in the Irish Carrickmacross needlework tradition.” The veil: “The veil is made of layers of soft, ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers… and held in place by a Cartier ‘halo’ tiara, lent to Miss Middleton by The Queen.”)  does it have a train, (Yes, indeed)  is it ivory or white? (white) ?

Here it is, and it is Magnificent!  And I am so happy she wore the Tiara! Well done. :)

The Accessories – handbag and shoes.  Since I can’t get a good picture of what she’s using, If I were Kate Middleton, these would be my choice:

Hats – as I’ve mentioned before, a hat, for me, is an all day decision (I heard that from Ellen Brown many years back, and it remains true).  Another reason why I wouldn’t be a good guest.  A hat is a commitment.   I don’t care for hats, or should I say Hats don’t fancy me!  But I’m sure there are tons of fabulous hats on parade at the big event.  If I didn’t have  hair, with bangs,  which looked ridiculous in hats, I’d pick one of these:

Cake or Cupcakes?

My vote would be for Royal Cupcakes, though if I was a betting gal (and I am),  I’d place my $$$ on a cake.  But for me, I’d go with yellow cupcakes, white frosting, and a coconut filling.  Or these lovely royal cupcakes, would be total crowd-pleasers.  This cake , I have to day…a bit much!

Famous Guests - I think a bride and groom should be  allowed to invite whomever they wish, but they really didn’t think it necessary to invite President and Michelle Obama?  Yet David Beckham, Victoria Beckham and Guy Ritchie made the list?  Really?!  Again, their choice, but not sure William and Kate hob nob about with the Soccer star and his wife?  I guess Bend it with Beckham is true british :)  Seeing Elton John at the ceremony reminded me of seeing him at Princess Diana’s funeral.  He had a front row seat at both (or at least was easy for the media to spot).  Added note, it has been brought to my attention that David Beckham and William are , indeed, friends, so I stand corrected! ;)

Questions, Questions, Questions….hopefully all will be answered today. And regardless if the media coverage has been rather excessive (my opinion only), let’s not forget the fact that today a girl became a Princess.  And, that certainly constitutes a good day!  And getting up early was worth every moment. :)

And they lived happily ever after!

Listening Skills… They’re All the Rage!

27 Apr

“Are you a good listener? Try hearing with your heart instead of your head.” (B1 Community)

“I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”   Robert McCloskey

I am not a good listener.  And how do I know this?  Because someone recently told me so.  He said, and I quote, “You did not listen to what I said”.  I thought I did, but in his eyes, I chose to hear what I wanted to hear, which was “yes, we can do that”, which, in turn, he indicated, “Not sure”.  The power of positive thinking.  If you think you can, or think you can’t you’re right.  I don’t think turning the tables on my listening skills (or lack thereof) exhibited good behavior on his part.  :)

That being said, however…he may have had a point.  :) I do think I , as well as society, can all do a better job listening.  A friend used to say, “You were given 2 ears and one mouth.  Use them accordingly”.  She may have said this to me, because I can be, at times, “chatty”.  (I know, another shocking revelation).  My children have also commented that I while I can recite, verbatim, what they Just said to me, it doesn’t appear that I”m listening to what they are saying.  So I am making a concerted effort to improve my listening skills.  Plus it exhibits good manners, and we know that good manners are Stylish.   When I googled “stylish listening”, I was presented with some lovely hearing aids.  That’s not what I was hoping to find…so,  I googled “listening skills” and came up with these nuggets of wisdom:

  1. Always keep a desire to listen to your partner, children, and friends. Do not look distracted when the other person is talking to you. If you are doing something important the politely ask to wait for some time until you finish your stuff.
  2. Do not interrupt the other person in the middle of his/her conversation. Do not try to give your advice in the middle of a communication by interrupting others. Just listen until the other person is done and if you want to give a piece of advice now is the correct time.
  3. Do not prepare your answer while they are talking. Try to stay only in the listening mode. Once you have all the information you will be more prepared to respond.
  4. Do not engage in selective listening. Listen to the words, facts and overall content of the person’s story. Do not just pay attention to what you find interesting.
  5. Observe facial expressions while listening. Also notice gestures, eye movement and body posture. This will give you information as to what they might be feeling about their conversation, more information to help you understand

The Art of Listening:

  • Trust is built on understanding
    • The more we understand someone the more trust we gain
  • Listening effectively is a discipline and skill
    • Although it takes effort-it takes practice too
  • How to ask purposeful questions in order to seek understanding
    • Using knowledge to ask not tell
    • Don’t need to be right, just productive
    • Ask better questions not just open ended questions
    • Bring it, don’t wing it.
  • It’s not what you say or how you say it, but when you say it.
    • Leaders need to understand in order to coach and motivate
    • All people want is respect and to seek approval
    • Don’t offer a solution until you have a complete understanding
  • Get involved
    • Remove distractions, phones, computers, etc.
    • Show understanding
    • Body language
    • Eye contact
    • Going back to the basics
  • Listen to others the way you want others to listen to you
    • Be courteous not condescending
    • Watch for insincere communication tactics
      • What I hear you saying is…?
  • Confirm understanding
  • Communication is a skill
    • Create a practice plan
    • Leader must coach not demand

And with college Finals right around the corner, I thought these Teacher/Student Listening Skills would be helpful for Meredith and her friends buckling down to take their tests:

Maintain eye contact with the instructor. Of course you will need to look at your notebook to write your notes, but eye contact keeps you focused on the job at hand and keeps you involved in the lecture.

Focus on content, not delivery. Have you ever counted the number of times a teacher clears his/her throat in a fifteen minute period? If so, you weren’t focusing on content.  My brother Luke has a classic story about this, and bets he and his friends would make…and when the teacher cleared his throat 87 times (which Luke bet), he jumped up and screamed!  :)

Avoid emotional involvement. When you are too emotionally involved in listening, you tend to hear what you want to hear–not what is actually being said. Try to remain objective and open-minded.

Avoid distractions. Don’t let your mind wander or be distracted by the person shuffling papers near you. If the classroom is too hot or too cold try to remedy that situation if you can. The solution may require that you dress more appropriately to the room temperature.

Treat listening as a challenging mental task. Listening to an academic lecture is not a passive act–at least it shouldn’t be. You need to concentrate on what is said so that you can process the information into your notes.

Stay active by asking mental questions. Active listening keeps you on your toes. Here are some questions you can ask yourself as you listen. What key point is the professor making? How does this fit with what I know from previous lectures? How is this lecture organized?

Use the gap between the rate of speech and your rate of thought. You can think faster than the lecturer can talk. That’s one reason your mind may tend to wander. All the above suggestions will help you keep your mind occupied and focused on what being said. You can actually begin to anticipate what the professor is going to say as a way to keep your mind from straying. Your mind does have the capacity to listen, think, write and ponder at the same time, but it does take practice.

I think by being a better listener, and not as “distracted” as we can tend to be,  we can better be in the”Moment”.  Which, truth be told, I’m always hoping to do, and rarely “am”.  I want to be where I am, when I’m there, and not a million miles away thinking of everything else I have to do!  And this my friends, is yet, another goal of mine.

Listening Skills are Stylish.  I should have a magnet made of that. :)

Happy Listening!

xoxo,

T.

And for my sister Megan, who thought this would be a good addition:

The Party Dress Code…Uncoded

22 Apr

“Never have a hurdle for someone to jump over to come to your party.”  (Cinda)

If people don’t know what to wear, there is a good chance they won’t show up!  Creative, fun party themes are terrific, but it is Not necessary for people to have to dress for the theme.  Make the dress code easy to understand, and easy to obtain.   (Terry O’Brien).

Banish pre-party jitters about attire with this quick reference to dress codes for social events.

 Black Tie or Formal

A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Formal usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some trendier cities like New York or Los Angeles, it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

A White Tie or Ultra-formal invitation requires men wear full dress, with white tie, vest, shirt. Women wear long gowns.

MEN

  • Black tailcoat, matching trousers with a single stripe of satin or braid in the US; two stripes in Europe or the UK
  • white piqué wing-collared shirt with stiff front
  • white vest
  • white-colored (e.g., mother of pearl) studs and cufflinks
  • white bow tie
  • white or gray gloves
  • black patent shoes and black dress socks

WOMEN

Formal (floor length) evening gown

And this couple, nails white tie…regardless of what you think of him as President, Mr. Obama and his wife, clean up quite well:

Black Tie Optional

A Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress, but it should clue you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

MEN

  • Either a tuxedo (see ‘Black Tie’ above) or
  • Dark suit, white shirt, and conservative tie
  • dressy leather shoes and dark dress socks

WOMEN

  • Formal (floor length) evening gown
  • dressy cocktail dress
  • a little black dress
  • dressy separates

Creative Black Tie

Creative Black Tie leaves room for trendy interpretations of formal wear. He can go more modern with a tux — maybe a black shirt, no tie. She wears long or short dresses or evening separates.

Sometimes, themed parties call for dress codes like Texas Black Tie or other variations of Creative Black Tie. In that situation, you can have more fun with it, choosing a dressy look with a theme (for him, it could be a tux with boots and for her it could be a long dress paired with Southwestern style silver belt and jewelry).

MEN

Tuxedo combined with trendy or whimsical items, such as a black shirt or a matching colored or patterned bow tie and cummerbund

WOMEN

  • Formal (floor length) evening gown
  • dressy cocktail dress
  • your dresiest little black dress
  • fun or unique accessories

Semi-Formal

Semi-Formal or After Five means that tuxes are not required, nor are long dresses. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) would still dictate dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or dressy suit for her.

MEN

  • Dark, business suit
  • matching vest (optional)
  • dress shirt
  • conservative tie
  • dressy leather shoes and dark dress socks

WOMEN

  • Short afternoon or cocktail dress
  • a little black dress
  • long dressy skirt and top
  • dressy separates

Business Formal is the same as Semi-Formal for him, but for women it suggests that women opt for more tailored dressy suits and dresses (nothing too slinky or sexy).

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail Attire means short, elegant dresses for her and dark suits for him.  Women can also wear black flowey slacks with a great blouse or festive jacket.

MEN

  • Dark, business suit
  • matching vest (optional)
  • dress shirt
  • conservative tie
  • dressy leather shoes and dark dress socks

WOMEN

  • Short afternoon or cocktail dress
  • a little black dress
  • long dressy skirt and top
  • dressy separates

 Informal

Informal is often interpreted as the same as Casual but it actually calls for the same dress as Semi-Formal — dark suits for him, short dresses for her — especially when associated with a wedding or special event.

MEN

  • Seasonal sport coat or blazer and slacks
  • dress shirt, casual button-down shirt
  • optional tie
  • open-collar or polo shirt

WOMEN

  • Dress
  • skirt and dressy top
  • dressy pants outfit
  • nice jeans and dressy top

Festive Attire – usually for holidays.

Festive Attire is usually seen around the holidays, with the mood of the party being Informal or Semi-Formal. For her, it means to choose looks with a bit of sparkle or holiday bent (i.e. a beaded sweater with black pants, a red silk blouse with a black skirt).

MEN

  • Seasonal sport coat or blazer in color of choice, and slacks
  • open-collar shirt
  • dress shirt and optional “festive” or holiday-themed tie

WOMEN

  • Cocktail dress or
  • long dressy skirt and top
  • dressy pants outfit or separates
  • a little black dress
  • feature holiday colors and accessories

Casual

Dressy Casual calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. For him, it could be trousers and a sportcoat, for her a dressy pants look. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other casual looks are not appropriate for Dressy Casual.

MEN:

  • Khakis or good jeans (clean, no holes)
  • cargo or Bermuda shorts—depending on occation and climate
  • plain t-shirt (no slogans), polo shirt, or turtleneck
  • casual button-down shirt
  • sweater
  • loafers, sneakers (with or without socks), or sandals

WOMEN

  • Sundress
  • long or short skirt
  • khakis or nice jeans
  • shorts (depending on occasion and climate)
  • plain t-shirt (no slogans), polo shirt, or turtleneck
  • casual button-down blouse

Casual generally means anything goes.

Note the gentleman with the flip flops…and note, no snarky comment by Moi.

Happy Good Friday…it’s a good friday to be alive.

Dressing Your Easter Basket!

15 Apr

Unique Easter Basket Ideas

As a parent, (and wife) I often get confused about what to put in an Easter basket that is fun, Eggcellent,  the kids will enjoy (and Kevin) and at the same time unique, so I’m not always filling them with the same items year after year….or just Cash, as this is what both Mer Mer and Paddy crave, as they feel Cash is King!   Jelly beans, DVDs, Peeps,  iTunes cards and Chocolates are the usual, but there are also other ideas out there.  Kevin’s easter basket is typically filled with 10 Large Hershey Bars (no nuts).  The kids usually get some of the same, year after year.   So, when looking for some Eggcellent new ideas,  I found some of these , and thought perhaps some of You can also try the following Easter basket ideas to make this year’s baskets more unique and memorable.   (The fabulous Easter basket above can be purchased at www.abernook.com).

Unique Easter Basket Idea with Books
If your kids love to read or you would want them to make books their new best friends, you can try a cute Easter basket idea with books. Little children will enjoy books with Easter story themes and older kids may enjoy Harry Potter or Twilight-type books. Whatever  their reading preferences, you can gift them Easter baskets with books and help them discover the hidden reader in them…and buy yourself a wonderful new book as well.  Girl with the Dragoon Tatoo is on my reading list.  You can start a tradition by gifting a favorite gift, each year, in the baskets.  Wish I had started that 19 years ago.  And in working with my “If you give a Mouse a Cookie” theme…may I suggest,  “If you give a Moose a Muffin?”

Stuff toys are always a hit and you can always place tickets to the theme park as a surprise.  Take it a step further and put baseball or basketball tickets in it.

Easter Basket Ideas for Teens

While many teens might declare they’re too old for Easter baskets( Easter is one of Mer Mer and Paddy’s favorite holidays!), most won’t say no to a basket full of their favorite goodies.   These can include movies and video games, music or books. Funky socks or a T-shirt may bring a smile , along with favorite treats, from candy and gum to energy drinks to anything Chocolate!

Other ideas for Easter baskets for teens include gift cards for gas, iTunes cards or shopping at a favorite store, movie tickets, and coupons for one night’s later curfew,  or skipping a least favorite chore one-time.  Patrick would enjoy not having to take out the garbage.  I’ll do that for him during the summer, when Mer Mer is home, so I don’t have to pick up the slack! ;)

Easter Basket Ideas for Adults

Easter is a family celebration and not only the children, but adults too look forward for their Easter basket. Easter basket ideas for adults includes coffee packets and coffee mugs for those who cannot survive without their hot cup of  Joe. PS – Speaking of Jelly Beans, my favorite, are Hands Down, Brach’s Jelly Beans…and NOT the spicy kind either.  These are far better than Jelly Belly, Mike and Ike, or Starbursts.

Wardrobe Must-Haves

8 Apr

Yippee Ki Yay!  We are back to Fashion!

There are some items that you absolutely need ready and waiting in your closet. These make up the basis of your wardrobe; they’re the “must-haves” , no matter what your style — the wardrobe essentials. To be considered a wardrobe essential, an article of clothing has to have several important attributes:

  • It must be versatile. This is the most important quality of an essential piece of clothing. One key factor in versatility is color. Because wardrobe essentials have to go with lots of other clothing, they tend to be monochromatic and neutral in color. They also must work with different outfits. A jacket that you can pair with a skirt, pants, or a pair of jeans is a good example.
  • It has to be of good, perhaps even exceptional, quality. A wardrobe essential makes a statement, and anyone looking should be able to tell that it’s top shelf. High quality also means that it wears well, and for a very long time — very important for a garment that you’ll rely on again and again.
  • It should be in a classic style. You don’t want your wardrobe essentials to ever really go out of fashion.
  • It must be a 10 or a Wow!  These garments, like everything in your closet, should have all the qualities of a 10, and because they form the basis of your stylish wardrobe, it’s okay to spend a little more for these than you would for  other, less essential, items.
  • WARDROBE MUST HAVES OR GOTTA HAVE EM:

Black dress – The Little Black Dress (LBD) -  Should classic and  sophisticated (and dare I say teetering on sexy) . It should be well-made and fit like a glove. It should hide your flaws and accentuate your attributes. It can go from day (wear it to the office with a cardigan or blazer and a set of pearls and leather pumps) to night (take off the blazer or cardigan and add some  evening makeup,  funkier jewelry, and heels).

Black pants – A pair of high-quality, flat front, black trousers are a necessity in every wardrobe. Stay away from pleats because they only accentuate an area that no one really needs accentuating! If you can buy only one pair of trousers, select a length that matches the heel height you most commonly wear. And choose a lightweight wool that will work in summer or winter.  Like a great pair of jeans, if you find a pair you absolutely Love, Love, Love, buy a 2nd pair.

White blouse – Think of a white button-up blouse as your upper body’s version of black pants—it’s versatile enough to wear anywhere, with almost anything. Pair your white shirt over a bathing suit for a weekend getaway or with your favorite pants for work.  You can dress it up.  Dress it down.  It’s perfect.

Blue jeans - Whether faded or tailored, the right pair of jeans will make you feel fabulous every minute.  When you find a pair that you absolutely love, and fits perfectly, if you can swing it, but a 2nd pair. My new favorite brand is Kut from the Kloth.  I get them at Nordstrom.  I have the faded, ripped pair, and a darker denim.  Same fit. Different look. Ralph Lauren and Seven Jeans are 2 other great brands that work for me.

Sassy skirt – Every woman should have a knee-length black skirt that fits perfectly and gives her a slim appearance. The particular style is up to you (and what looks good on your body type): It can be a pencil skirt or an A-line skirt.  So that it can go from season to season, look for one that’s a lightweight wool.  I suggest one not too short, and not too long.  Just above the knee.  Pair it with boots, or high heel pumps.  Wear it with a turtleneck, or white blouse, or sweater set, or t-shirt with denim jacket.  Each gives the outfit a new fresh look.  Take it a step further, and make your black skirt, a black leather skirt…Leather is not just for clubbing anymore (not that I would know about clubbing).  I have a black leather skirt , slightly higher than the knee, which I pair with…you guessed it, white blouse, or a turtleneck, or a black suit jacket.  And, I’m able to wear it for work.  It’s a classic look, even with it being a leather skirt.

Flats - Give your feet a well-deserved break and get a fabulous pair of flats; try a knockout color like red. Heels aren’t the only way to fancy up your feet. From preppy-casual to peep-toe sexy, you’ll love the way the right flat shoes look with jeans, dresses and trousers.  These are a recommendation from my friend Donna, who finds Tory Burch flats, the most god-awfully uncomfortable shoes!  Attilio Giusti Leombruni.  And, pricey, yet worth it.  My #1 fashion advice (aside from a fabulous black shawl)…Life is too short to wear uncomfortable shoes.  Find shoes that feel good, and You will feel good.

Boots – According to the laws of fashion, when something has been around for three seasons or more it has the right to declare itself a “basic”.  Wear them with jeans, leggings, or a skirt or dress.   In fact a decent pair of  boots can catapult even the most boring outfit into a fashion wow.

Denim jacket  – I wear mine to dress up an outfit, or dress down an outfit.  One of my favorite looks is to pair a dress with a denim jacket.  I love wearing a wrap dress, denim jacket, and boots.  I also wear a black skirt, white t-shirt, chunky necklace and denim jacket.  Or, my black denim jacket, blue jeans, and white blouse, and high heel sandals.  This is the 3rd time I’ve posted this picture, but I just want to drive home my point…you can wear a black denim jacket with just about anything!  (Note…it is very difficult to pair a Blue denim jacket, with Blue denim jeans.  Do Not try this at home).

Wrap dress - I always feel great in a wrap dress.  you can wear it with a camisole  underneath, or skip the cami, and just flaunt what you have (or don’t in my case, and try to rely on your sense of humor).    I wear mine with boots, or high heel sandals, or my black patent leather peep toe pumps!  They’re easy to travel with, because they weigh next to nothing.  And you can dress them up with pearls, or dress them down with a denim jacket!

Cashmere Sweater  - Invest in a classic style in a statement-making, vibrant color to brighten up your wardrobe. A cashmere sweater is luxurious and versatile—you can wear it to the office, for an evening on the town or just chilling out at home.  Choose a v-neck or a sweater set.  You can pair it with jeans, pants, or a straight skirt, or wear it over your LBD.  You can get one in black, cream, or red…or an argyle print.  You can also look for a vintage one.  I have one that is a cream-colored Lacoste that was my Father’s, and I wear it belted with a skirt and boots.  Oh, and there’s always something on the bottom! ;)

Trench Coat – A basic belted trench coat is versatile and comes in a variety of fabric and color options. To avoid looking like a secret agent, choose a well-tailored option that hits right at (or below) the knee for a polished look.  I like Red, Black or White.  My friend Donna has the most Fabulous Burberry Trench.  That falls under the category “It costs more but it’s worth it”.  That is on my wish list! ( Note to file…don’t go looking for Donna in her Burberry trench, because she really doesn’t wear it, as she’s afraid to ruin it.  Can’t say I blame her. ) ;)

Signature Scarf or Shawl  – The right scarf  or shawl can add instant impact to a suit, a dress or a crisp white shirt. Pick one in a bold color or vivid pattern; tie it around your neck or onto your purse handle, or twist it and wear it as a simple, but vibrant, belt.  Or wear classic black, and say hello to your new best friend!

Sunglasses – The easiest way to class up any outfit—for work or weekend—is with a super-classy (and UV-protective) pair of fashion sunglasses. A general rule of thumb when shopping for the perfect pair: Rounded frames soften a square jaw line, square frames slim cheeks and rectangular frames add width and dimension to your face.  These are my Burberry sunglasses, which I got on sale at Nordstrom www.nordstrom.com for less than $90.  I wear them every single day, and they came with a fabulous  Burberry hard case to protect them.  I Never leave home without them!

Your perfect Handbag - I suggest 2: one large, and one clutch.  I also use my large tote for a laptop bag.  No need to have to carry a boring brief-case to carry your laptop.  I throw my small clutch in the large tote, and use it as a wallet .  I also carry the small clutch on its own.  I make sure my small clutch is large enough to carry what I need to carry:  2 cell phones; lipstick; small (really small) wallet; pen and 5 business cards (which also doubles as a note card).  And, needs to be able to hold my keys, which I do not have tons of keys on my key chain.  Only car and house key.

These are all basics.  I didn’t note any high heel pumps, since I’ve dedicated 3 previous blogs to shoes, my sense if you know my position on fabulous high heel shoes…the More the Merrier!  You can find any of these wardrobe essentials  at Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic,  or Etcetera :) .   Of course, you can also  just google any of these items.   I do this when I want something specific to ensure I am getting the best possible price.   I have built my entire wardrobe around these staples.  Black, Red, and White works best are the cornerstone of my color palette.  And building a wardrobe around a color scheme will be a future blog. :)

    Of Mice and Terry

    6 Apr

Who knew that my little blog on the misadventures of our mice, would generate so much interest!  So, I have no choice but to offer up a follow-up Mouse blog…Truth be told, I’ve turned into a Mouse Frau.  Based upon the title of this blog, you may get the gist, that the saga of  “Of  Mice and Terry”  is not yet over.   It’s shocking to admit, but I  can be such a girl (and not in a good way).  I’ve screamed so much at the site of mice, I feel like I have a raging sore throat…and if I wasn’t so gosh darned clumsy, I would stand on a chair to avoid the mice.   But hence, I would fall off, so not sure what is worse a broken leg, broken ego, or a heart attack from the mice, so I’m staying off the chair.

What has happened since we last met 7 days ago…Bachelors 5,6,7 and 8 have reared their ugly beady eyes.   I won’t get into the nitty-gritty, about the hows and why’s of how these creatures have continued to Take over my Life  (since this is supposed to be a style blog),  but  the mice have outsmarted the traps as well as the plug-in mice repellent!   I am not amused.   And lest you think I live in squalor, not true!  My home is clean, neat, and organized (most places).  It happens to the best of us.  And,  I have declared “I’m sick and tired and not going to take it anymore”.  The O’Brien’s shall stop being such gracious hosts, except for party guests, whom we actually invite!

This week  Dennis from Orkin, appeared at our door, and I have hope, and a few less mice.   We have admitted we have a problem, and are taking the necessary 12-steps to ensure we rid our lives of these nasty little creatures.  I figure the humiliation of having Mr. Bug in my driveway pales in comparison to having a heart attack at my tender young age, so we gave in to a higher power (Mr. Orkin).   We are Rodent-Free…and will be on an on-going program to remain as such.  Oh, and we know I’m not that young! ;)

It pains me to admit, but this is not the first time we have been invaded on our home field.  Several years back, a gaggle of raccoons decided they digged our home (pun intended) and started to expand their family in the walls of our humble abode.  Again, we were not amused.  I was even unhappier when the guy from ABC Wildlife asked if National Geographic could film the rescue of these house invaders  for an upcoming special on “How wild animals migrate into people’s homes. ”  I did not want to be known as the Raccoon Lady, so I politely declined.

Actually…I do not want to be the mouse lady either, or the raccoon lady, or the lady who screams each time she sees a mouse.  Instead, Meredith or Patrick’s mom, Kevin’s wife (most of the time :) ), Mrs. O’Brien, Terry O, TOB… or T., the gal who writes that snappy blog, sometimes about fashion, actually suits me just fine.

To my partners in Elimination (actually more them, then I)…Eileen and Linda…I owe you the world, or at least a lovely bottle of chardonnay.  Thank you both so much for everything, and for helping me gain back my sanity and house!  It took a village! :)

    xoxo

PS -Running screaming from mice, does not a workout make. :)

Happy Spring!   And coming Friday…Wardrobe Essentials!

    The 14-Shirt Wardrobe

    4 Apr

First Monday of the Month…MANic Monday!

So…a 14-shirt wardrobe.  Say what?  Clearly, I’m speaking to the guys (as women need far more than 14 shirts :) )…You, the Men, however  truly need 14 dress shirts.  Dress shirts are an essential to a man’s wardrobe.

    The 14 Shirt Wardrobe

    • 14 shirts allow you to have 7 at the cleaners and 7 in the closet.    Makes sense, right?

    White

    • 2 Straight Collars

    • 1 Spread Collar

    • 1 Button Down Collar

2 Fancy Patterns (subtle gray stripe & subtle gray/blue check, or paisley)

    Blue

    • 2 Straight Collars

    • 1 Spread Collar

    • 1 Button Down Collar

    1 Pink or Off-White (Ecru)

    1 Light Lavender

    2 Contrasting Collar and Cuffs

Contrast cuff and collar are a great addition to casual and dressy casual occasions. Although not generally appropriate for the work place, they offer a great option for casual days at the office like Fridays.  It’s easy and fun to alternate shirt fabric choices with cuff and collar choices.

This is a very subtle collar and cuff…

And that’s it…14 shirts.  Easy.  And consider it done.

    And another gentle reminder:

    • Ties should complement the suit or coat, and shirts should complement the tie.

And lastly, I love, love, love this look:

    xoxo,

PS – No one looks good in a short-sleeved dress shirt. :)

Coming Wednesday…Update on “Of Mice and Terry”.

    Accessories…Don’t leave home without them!

    1 Apr

I adore accessories!  They can take an outfit from boring or bland, and give it pizzazz and style.   They are y life line.  And,  like shoes, you never have a fat day with accessories.   And I must say, I’m getting a lot of mileage out of that quote! :)

Fashion accessories are ”decorative items that supplement and complement clothes, such as jewelry, gloves, handbags, hats, belts, scarves, watches, sunglasses, pins, stockings, bow ties, leg warmers, leggings , neckties, suspenders, and tights”.  (Thanks Wikipedia).  And horror of all horrors, Fanny Packs are making a comeback.  Yup, that’s right…and I’ll save that for a future blog!

Accessories can add color, style and class to an outfit, and create a certain look, but they can also have a practical function: handbags can be used to carry small items such as cash, lipstick and your cellphone, hats are stylish, yet  protect the face in bad weather (but a hat can be an all day decision, so make it wisely), and gloves and mittens keep hands warm.  Long gone are the days where women wore long leather gloves that were part of an outfit.  Think Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany.  Accessories,  thankfully, can be both fashionable and functional.    Jewelry of course is all about fashion!  Of course , you could argue a tip clip could be both, but let’s not argue with me.

Handbags - along with shoes, are a girl’s best friend.  I change my handbag daily to match my outfit.  Truly.  It takes all of 2 minutes, and it makes me happy.  I’ve been collecting handbags for years, and now angle towards more unique handbags, so I don’t carry the same pocketbooks (as my friend Kathy calls them) as everyone else.  And this Burberry number is not mine, but I liked it so wanted to post a picture of it.   Check out eBay (www.ebay.com) for gently used high-end designer handbags.  Make sure they are authentic, but this is a great way to add a fabulous designer handbag to your collection.  And for a change, I am Not featuring a black handbag!

Shoes!  Women have a love affair with shoes.  It’s funny, the older I get, the higher my heel gets.   I’m sure this personal trend will soon come to a crashing halt, when I take a major fall.  Not that I haven’t already! ;)

Jewelry – I wear jewelry every single day.  I don’t feel dressed without wearing  earrings, my rings, and at least one bracelet.  I also love vintage jewelry, and have found some truly fantastic pieces at the Flea Market.   Jewelry, can be elegant, personal or simply statement pieces, and can include:

Necklaces – Dainty, or chunky.  It changes the look.  It took me forever to realize it was necklace (neck/lace),  Decoration for the neck!  This Tiffany shoe necklace decorates my neck almost everyday, and while I’m sure Mer Mer helped Kevin pick it out, pretty much was a perfect gift for me.    Again, he didn’t have to break the bank with this one.

Earrings -  Stud, Chandelier, hoops, funky pair … If  you only own 4 pair of earrings, these would be 4 good choices.  And the stud earrings are cubic zirconia, and about $20.  No need to break the bank.  Actually each of these is less than $70.  www.nordstrom.com.

Bangles - $49 Nordstrom.  These come in silver, gold, or a combo of the two.  You can wear all 30 at the same time, or divide them up.  Brings sparkle, snap and fun to any outfit.  I received a set of these from my friend Donna, and I wear them all the time.

Bracelets - Kevin gave me a gold Tiffany charm bracelet in 1996, before the silver one became all the rage.  This bracelet works for young and the not so young.  I also have a silver one, as does Meredith.  This is a timeless piece of jewelry.  I also appears every young woman under the age of 25 has one as well.  Accessory staple!

This tennis bracelet is real (it’s a picture from the web), but you can get wonderful swarovski crystal bracelets for less than $100, and no one can tell the difference.  Brings a lovely amount of bling to your day.

Rings – these are the statement, aka cocktail rings, that we spoke of in the spring trends blog.  Cocktail rings, are not just for cocktail parties anymore!  And all of these are costume jewelry.  Check out  www.abernook.com for some great snappy cocktail rings!

Accessories…don’t leave home without them! :)

    xoxo,

    T.
